  • It is well known that health and psychosocial factors are closely associated with depressive symptoms. Due to limitations in available data and analysis methods, however, little is known about the effects of health and psychosocial factors on depression trajectory. In order to address the limitations, this study examines the predictors of depression trajectory using latent growth curve modeling involving individuals aged 60 and over who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study (N=4,919). Controlling for socioeconomic variables, health and psychosocial variables were cross-sectionally associated with depressive symptoms, which is consistent with previous findings. However, the effects of health and psychosocial variables on the rate of depressive symptom change varied. Health variables were significantly associated with the levels of depressive symptoms at wave 1, but these were not significantly associated with the rate of depressive symptoms change. By contrast, although psychosocial variables were significantly associated with depressive symptoms at wave 1, the effects of psychosocial variables on the rate of depressive symptom change varied. Specifically, while self-esteem and family relationship were positively associated with the rate of depressive symptom change, social relationship was negatively associated with the rate of depressive symptom change. Based on the findings, this study discussed implications for intervention and future research.

  • The Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety 2004(FAMDS) currently underpins Korean civil protection system, and under this FAMDS, Korean civil protection establishes a three-tiered government structure for dealing with crises and disasters: central government, provincial & metropolitan government, and local government tiers. In particular, the concept of Integrated Emergency Management(IEM) emphasizes that emergency response organizations should work and act together to respond to crises and disasters effectively, based on the coordination and cooperation model, not the command and control model. In tune with this trend, civil protection matters are, first, dealt with by local responders at the local level without direct involvement of central or federal government in the UK or USA. In other words, central government intervention is usually implemented in the UK and the USA, only when the scale or complexity of a civil protection issue is so vast, and thus requires a degree of central government coordination and support, resting on the severity and impact of the event. In contrast, it appears that civil protection mechanism in Korea has adopted a rigid centralized system within the command and control model, and for this reason, central government can easily interfere with regional or local command and control arrangements; there is a high level of central government decision-making remote from a local area. The principle of subsidiarity tends to be ignored. Under these circumstances, it is questionable whether such top-down arrangements of civil protection in Korea can manage uncertainty, unfamiliarity and unexpectedness in the age of Risk Society and Post-modern society, where interactive complexity is increasingly growing. In this context, the study argues that Korean civil protection system should move towards the decentralized model, based on coordination and cooperation between responding organizations, loosening the command and control structure, as with the UK or the USA emergency management arrangements. For this argument, the study basically explores mechanisms of civil protection arrangements in Korea under current legislation, and then finally attempts to make theoretical suggestions for the future of the Korean civil protection system.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of social capital in regards to the influence that family income and job status have on the level of satisfaction with family relationships among married immigrant women. We conducted the second analysis of "2009 National Survey of Multicultural Family State" and used moderated regression analyses. Controlled variables included age, education level, offspring status, and Korean proficiency, while independent factors included family income and job status. Moderating variables of social capital included trust, participation, and network. The results showed that all the demographic variables, as well as family income and job status, had significant influences on married immigrant women's satisfaction with family relationships. In particular, when factors of social capital interacted with family income and job status, the study showed that it had a different influence on the satisfaction with family relationships. Moreover, the moderating effects have been shown to be more certified through its comparison of the increasing and decreasing trends of social capital. This research has been shown to be significant, based upon the findings on moderating effects of social capital in respect to married immigrant women's level of satisfaction with family relations. Practical implications of our results in the context of social welfare were discussed.

  • This study examined the relationship between leisure needs and perception of psycho-social aging among 1307 older adults aged over 60 years utilizing social services of a social welfare center for senior citizens in Seoul, Korea. A convenience sample of this study was collected for three weeks in December 2012 among older adults via paper survey. Hierarchical multiple regression was utilized to analyze collected data. The present study demonstrated that age, years of education, perception of health status, and perception of economic status were significantly associated with perception of successful aging. However, years of education and perception of economic status were no longer significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging, when leisure needs was included. Age, perception of health status, and hobbies/entertainment activities and employment/plan of later years activities among types of leisure needs were significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging. This finding demonstrates that leisure needs influence perception of psycho-social aging. Implications and suggestions to improve perception of psycho-social aging among older adults are discussed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to find out whether group approach of sensory integration (SI) enhances sensory processing, fine motor function, and social skill for the children with sensory integration disorders. Method : Three children with problems related in sensory integration had got received 21 intervention sessions. We evaluated children with sensory profile(SP), social maturity test, Korean-developmental test of visual perception(K-DTVP), Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency(BOTMP) before-and after intervention. The statistical significance of data is tested by the Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test. Results : All data of post-intervention did not show any statistically significant differences; SP, social maturity test, K-DTVP, BOTMP. Conclusions : This study is to verify the effect of group SI intervention on sensory processing, fine motor function, and social skill for children with sensory integration disabilities. The results were not statistically significant. However, the average score after SI intervention has been improved in the section of fine motor and social skill comparing to that of pre-intervention period. It would have positive impact for children with sensory integration disabilities. It is needed to study with the larger number of target children and more often treatment session are suggested. The confounding variables also should be controlled in the further study.

  • With broad individual variability in social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorders and increasing focus on interventions targeting social communication of this population, there is a need for systematic analysis of how social communication outcomes are measured. This study aimed to systematically analyze the measurement tools used in the music therapy interventions for improving social communication of children with ASD. Electronic databases and music therapy journals were searched for controlled studies published between 1980 and 2015. A total of 21 studies were included for the analysis. The results demonstrated that direct observation of behaviors was the most frequently used and the combination of targeted social communication areas and specific measurements used for a specific skill varied among the studies. In addition, 90.4% of studies reported interrater reliability. These results indicate that there has been a diversity in approaches to measure social communication skills despite increasing attempts for systematic measurements. In consideration of the nature of social communication development in children with ASD, multifaceted strategy to understand and assess the target skills in terms of specific behavior acquisition, social functioning in general, and social cognition was recommended.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vision and hearing limitation on the onset of disability among Korean elderly with the consideration of social participation and depression. Study population consisted of 2,670 people aged 65 and above who participated in both the 1st(2006) and 2nd(2008) wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA), and also reported no ADL or IADL disability in 2006. As the results, first, it found that vision and hearing limitation, social participation, and depression were significant risk factors for the onset of IADL disability in unadjusted analysis. After multivariable adjustment, however, only vision limitation showed significant association with the onset of IADL disability. Second, in the logistic analysis with four categorized variables(vision/hearing limitation + social participation, vision/hearing limitation + depression), the elderly who had vision or hearing limitation had a significantly 1.7 times higher odds ratio for disability onset if they also had low social participation compared with those who had no vision or hearing limitation, and high social participation. Whereas, depression was not significantly associated with the relationship between vision or hearing limitation, and disability onset. The study suggests that the intervention program developed to prevent social isolation of older people with vision or hearing limitation, may be helpful to reduce and postpone the risk of disability onset as well as early detection and treatment of vision or hearing problems.

  • This study conducted a group reminiscence program for the elderly who use the elderly daycare center. And this study verified the effectiveness of the elderly's mental health related quality of life to identify the relationship between the participating elderly and the non-participating elderly in a group reminiscence program. To this end, in order to examine the effectiveness of a group reminiscence programs for the elderly using the daycare center on MHRQoL, and the difference between the experimental group and the control group was compared with the non-equivalent control group pre-post test design. The research results are as follows. First, the experimental group that conducted the group reminiscence program in this study had a higher quality of life than the control group that did not participate the group reminiscence program. Second, significant results were found in vitality and mental health in the sub-factors of MHRQoL of the experimental group, and emotional role restriction and social function did not show significant results. Based on the results of this study, to develop and improve programs that encompass the entire sub-areas of MHRQoL, and to implement programs that positively affect the psycho-social intervention for the elderly persons. Finally, it was suggested to link and cooperate with senior welfare centers and general social welfare centers.
