  • This study analyzed data from 1997 Korea's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey collected through telephone questionings based on the multi-stage stratified random sampling. We categorized respondents into those who had ever drunk an alcoholic beverage in the last month and those who didn't and, referring to the World Health Organization's guideline, the former group were further categorized into low risk drinking group and high risk drinking group. Employing bivariate probit regression analyses with censoring on independent variables such as preferred type of alcoholic beverage, the number of types of beverages consumed, age, marital status, education, occupation, residential area, current smoking, body mass index and stress suggested (1) that those who prefer soju are more likely to involve high risk drinking than those who and prefer the other alcoholic beverages (2) that those who are relatively older, who live without a partner, who have jobs, who. are vulnerable to stress, or who enjoy more than one type of beverage are more likely to be exposed to high risk drinking than the others.

  • How to eliminate health disparity to ensure health equity is one of major issues that are handled across the world. The purpose of this study was to examine any possible differences in self-rated oral health state according to socioeconomic status and the relationship between the two based on the data of the 5th National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey of 2010~2012. As for differences in self-rated oral health state according to sociodemographic characteristics, the women considered themselves to be in poorer oral health than the men. The older respondents found themselves to be in poorer oral health, and there was a tendency that the respondents who were less educated and whose household income was smaller rated their own health as worse. When a logistic regression analysis was made to determine influential factors for self-rated oral health status, the women perceived they were in better oral health than the men did, and the better-educated respondents were more likely to consider themselves healthier. Concerning disparities in self-rated health state according to income level, there were broader differences in that regard according to an increase of income. The findings of the study illustrated that there was oral health inequity according to social stratum. It's required to make a nationwide effort to promote national oral health, and appropriate support should especially be provided for disadvantaged people at the same time in order to get rid of the gap in oral health among different social classes, as there is a yawning gap between them and the other classes.

  • In modern society, developing and utilizing safety service and system environments is a very important and great interest. In particular, the provision of safety services to socially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, women, the disabled and foreigners has become a social issue. However, since most safety services and systems are applied to the general public, it is necessary to develop systems for socially vulnerable groups. Therefore, in this paper, we developed a system module that processes and transmits data to recognize the situation in real time and respond quickly. To this end, various sensors for real-time situation recognition were designed as integrated modules, and a safety system module was developed to analyze the collected data and transmit the processing results.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the housing tenure choice decisions of older households, with focus on the activity constraints of the householders. For analysis, the probit model based on the data of the householders over 55 years of age from the 2015 KLIPS data was implemented. The research findings indicate that the ownership choice probability decreases when the head of the household has activity or social activity constraints. If there is an activity restriction, it is considered that the possibility of self-residence will be low due to the increase in medical expenses, the possibility of participation in economic activities will be low, the possibility of early retirement will be high, and the income will decrease. Therefore, if the head of the household has a personal or social activity constraint, such case is more likely to be categorized as falling under the poor residential group. This result suggests that the activity constraint can be utilized as a useful index for the housing welfare policy considering physical vulnerability.

  • Since empathy is an essential element for building trustful relationship between clients and social workers and successful interventions, empathy is an important quality to social workers and social work students. However, it has been very rare that empathy is the topic of studies in the field of social work. It is believed that the scarcity of studies on empathy may be related to the lack of instruments measuring empathy. The purpose of this study is to develop an empathy scale in order to facilitate studies on empathy in social work. Based upon the literature review of empathy, the examination of existing empathy scale, and the comments from professionals in this field, preliminary items were developed. The items were evaluated with 615 social work practitioners and social work students. A series of exploratory factor analysis were conducted and found out that the scale is composed of two factors with 38 items. One factor has 19 items measuring interpersonal empathy and the other factor has the same number of items measuring social empathy. The scale is named Interpersonal and Social Empathy Scale. Unlike existing scales used to measure empathy in Korea, the scale includes social empathy. Social empathy is the ability to understand people by perceiving or experiencing their life situations and as a result gain insight into structural inequalities and disparities. The subscale measuring social empathy would be widely utilized by social work researchers who are primarily interested in the enhancement of the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations.

  • In our society, recently, the concept of social economy stands out as an alternative to the mainstream economy in the market. It is noteworthy that although the social economy has the nature of practical field of civil society, the government has a willingness to actively support the social economy as a means of getting visible result of job creation. The social economy in Korea is being fostered by the government and understood within the framework of a very limited policy goal of providing jobs for the vulnerable. The problem is that the social value and community implications of the social economy are disappearing while the social economic organizations have higher policy status and become more and more dependent on the government's financial support. This paper suggests that the discourse on the social economy should be reconstructed while holding the problem of this situation.
