  • Many local governments in Korea provide online services for people to easily access the audio-visual archives of events occurring in the area. However, the current method of managing these archives of the local governments has several problems in terms of compatibility with other organizations and convenience for searching of the archives because of the lack of standard metadata and the low utilization of image information. To solve these problems, we propose the metadata design and machine learning-based automatic indexing technology for the efficient management of the image archives of local governments in Korea. Moreover, we design metadata items specialized for the image archives of local governments to improve the compatibility and include the elements that can represent the basic information and characteristics of images into the metadata items, enabling efficient management. In addition, the text and objects in images, which include pieces of information that reflect events and categories, are automatically indexed based on the machine learning technology, enhancing users' search convenience. Lastly, we developed the program that automatically extracts text and objects from image archives using the proposed method, and stores the extracted contents and basic information in the metadata items we designed.

This paper aims to critically examine the photographic-essays within 'Sasanggye' as archival records, shedding light on their intrinsic value. Before delving into this assessment, the paper thoroughly explores the developmental process and characteristics of these photographic-essays. And based on the content divisions within the main text, the paper categorized the themes captured in the photographic essays into politics, economics, society, culture, and miscellaneous topics. It then introduced representative photographicessays. From an archival perspective, looking at photographs involves elucidating that photographs carry meanings beyond mere data. • Photographic records capturing the changes of a city are vital parts of local history archives. They were, however, not collected properly for the local history archives even by local governments. Therefore, as a solution for this problem, seven major cities (Seoul, Incheon, Gwangju, Ulsan, Daejeon, Busan, and Daegu) initiated the urban landscape documentation project for archiving the photographic records of each city. This study investigated the current status of the urban landscape documentation project and found that Daegu metropolitan city's project only holds some of the contest photos and a few old photos from the local government. A proper donating process is urgently needed to preserve valuable photographic records of Daegu, and this study aims solutions for the Daegu metropolitan city's urban landscape documentation project to improve the acquisition methods of photographic records. This study suggests the process for photographic records donation from citizens and a metadata set for donated photographs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the use of modern photographic records. Data was collected through a survey of 95 potential users for photographic records in future. Independent variables in this study included evidential value, informational value, usage value, intrinsic value. Dependent variable was selected as use intention for photographic records. The results of analysis of multi-regression analysis showed that evidential value and intrinsic value were found to have a positive impact on use intention for photographic records in modern korea. The results from this study can be used as important basic data for building archives for photographic record or for developing the policy for effective photographic records management.

  • While relevant studies emphasize the significance of user-oriented indexing associated with fulfilling both topical and non-topical needs of individual users, a great number of operational retrieval systems supports only those searches related to subject attributes of the users' needs. Retrieval systems for presidential image collections are not an exception for such a restriction. Upon this reality. this study seeks diversification of access points for presidential images based on descriptors directly presented by potential user groups. Improvements of subject-based descriptors are suggested based on those descriptors identified.

  • Since the opening of Joseon in 1876, the photographic records of the late Joseon Dynasty and the period of the Korean Empire exist more than expected, considering the technological level and the social situations at that time. Photographs related to Korea can be distributed in various forms, such as illustrations of books printed to introduce Korea to Western society, plates of graphic journalism like newspapers or magazines, vintage prints, photo-postcards, stereo-photographs, card-type photographs, and lantern slides. There are still a great deal left in various archives of the Europe, America, Japan and Korea. According to related researchers, Korean-related photographs taken between 1863 and 1910, since Koreans were first photographed, were at least 3,000 to 4,000 cuts and the photo postcards issued was 25,000. It is said that most of them exist. This paper categorizes two ways of producing and distributing photographic records related to Korea, which were early modern times. The subjects of the photographs are clearly Korea or Koreans, but most of the producers of these photographs were Westerners and Japanese, who were imperial servants of imperialism. In the case of photography, there is a great possibility of distortion of the facts depending on the needs or perspectives of the producers. In order to correct the distortion, not only the contents of the photograph but also the intention of the producer, the production and the communication status should be grasped. This is because the problem of reading photograph records accurately and fairly in an age where there is no real experience is the cornerstone for understanding modern Korea correctly and broadly studying the Modern History of Korea.

  • The study aims to analyze the characteristics and problems of raw image file formats, evaluate its suitability for the management of digital photographic records, and suggest the introduction method to utilize such format in public institutions. Raw image file formats feature reversibility and flexibility. However, most of them are proprietary file formats that depend on the digital camera manufacturer. The DNG format, which was developed to standardize raw image file formats, has received positive reviews from overseas public agencies. However, the DNG format is not fully recognized as a standard; hence, it is appropriate to use it tentatively until the standard raw format appears. On the other hand, the converted digital photo file format is not recognized as an original with legal authenticity. Therefore, in the short term, DNG files created by format conversion and original raw files should be encapsulated and preserved. Furthermore, it is necessary to redefine the baseline of the hash value and file size to recognize the legal authenticity only with DNG files in the long term.
