  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment effects of the modified Teuscher appliance (MTA) in early Class II division 1 malocclusion. For this purpose, treatment effects of the bionator were compared with those of the MTA. The twenty subjects who were treated excellently with bionator and MTA were selected in each group. In pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms, 50 variables were measured, and then the differences between pretreatment and posttreatment data of the bionator and the MTA were statistically evaluated by t-test. The results were as follows : 1. The linear measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are U1 to FH, U1 to PP, U6 to FH, U6 to PP, Ar-Pog, ramus height, L1 to A-Pog, L1 to facial plane (p<0.05). 2. The angular measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are SNB, SNA, FABA, APDI (p<0.05). 3. The measurements of the growth pattern such as facial height ratio, FMA, SN-MP angle showed no difference between two groups (p>0.05). These results suggest that the bionator influence the mandiblar growth and lower dentoalveolar structures more than the MTA, and the MTA influence upper jaw and upper dentoalveolar structures more than the bionator comparatively in early Class II division I malocclusion.

  • Making a precise and ideal set-up model is an essential part in the indirect bonding procedure for lingual orthodontic treatment. To evaluate the accuracy of the making a set-up model, 22 adult patients who received lingual orthodontic treatment with 4 bicuspid extractions were selected, and 3 sets of dental models (before, set-up, and after treatment) were measured using the set-up model gauge, an instrument for measuring the inclination and angulation of the clinical crowns on the dental model. Two sets of lateral cephalograms (before and after) from each patient were also evaluated. The mean difference between the before treatment model and the set-up model was $-3.93{\pm}6.98^{\circ}$ for the inclination and $1.87{\pm}5.79^{\circ}$ for the angulation. And the mean difference between the set-up model and the after treatment model was $-4.31{\pm}5.91^{\circ}$ labiolingually and $-2.16{\pm}3.27^{\circ}$ mesiodistally, The after treatment model differed from the before treatment model about $-8.24{\pm}5.39^{\circ}$ in inclination. There were no significant difference between the measured gauge that measured from the dental model using the set-up model gauge and the calculated gauge angle measured from the lateral cephalogram using constructed points and lines. Using the set-up model gauge, it is possible to evaluate the study model 3-dimensionally in relation with the patient's lateral cephalogram and establish whether the doctor's prescription or overcorrection is built in the set-up model precisely.

  • This study was performed to establish the cephalometric standards in Downs analysis and to compare them with other races. The lateral cephalograms of 88 Korean children (47 boys, 41 girls) with normal occlusion and acceptable profile between 7 and 11 years of age were taken and Downs analysis was done. Results were as follows: 1. Norms of Korean boys, girls and both sexes at 7, 9, 11 years of age by Downs analysis were established. 2. There were no statistically significant differences between boys and girls about ten measurements in each group, but significant differences in the occlusal plane angle, lower 1 to occlusal plane angle, interincisal angle, upper 1 to APog plane among 3 groups(p<0.05)(p<0.01). 3. Facial angle, AB plane angle, Y-axis, lower 1 to occlusal plane angle and lower 1 to mandibular plane angle showed increasing tendency whereas angle of convexity, mandibular plane angle, occlusal plane angle and interincisal angle did decreasing tendency according to aging. 4. In comparison among races, measurements in Korean children were generally larger than those of Caucasian and Greek except for small interincisal angle, but Korean were similar to Japanese, Chinese, Israeli, Negro about all measurements.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate the observational error included in plane photogrammetric data and suggest more accurate and suitable method for body shape measurement. Three experiments were carried out in this study. First of all, the variables which can be obtained from photogrammetric method were selected among the data which can be measured improperly by direct measurement or showing large deviations between the samples. Secondly, the height, the width and the depth of 50 subjects were measured by plane photogrammetry. The result showed that plane photogrammetric data contain significant observational error even for the same variables, as the angle of which photos had been taken changes. Therefore, in order to reduce the observational error and to measure the human body accurately, three-dimensional measurement, stereo photogrammetry was employed in the last experiment. As it is important to isolateonly the observational error by plane photogrammetry and to exclude the accidental error caused by movement of human body subject, body shape model(manikin) was used as subject. The result showed that the average observational error by plane photogrammetry was more than 4 cm in the height, 0.85-1.29cm in the width and 0.49cm in the depth. In conclusion, it is not adequate to use the height obtained from plane photogrammetric data as human body measurement data. And the width and the depth should be used cautiously, even though they are relatively less significant, the error still can make some difference on clothing construction.

  • Radiography of nasopharynx are routinely performed for nasopharyngeal soft tissue changes. Although CT scan is widely performed nowadays, the value of lateral neck radiograph is still important to detect the masses in the nasopharynx. The purpose of this study was to establish the constitution of the normal dimension of the nasopharyngeal soft tissue on the lateral neck radiograph and make a parameter of the nasopharyngeal soft tissue hypertrophy. We have made various measurements of the thickness of the nasopharyngeal soft tissue on the lateral skull films in 214 Korean adults (109 males and 104 females). We found that the diameter of the nasopharyngeal soft tissue was decreased by age and the value of males were always greater than that of females and the thickness of the roof was always less than the posterior wall.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between disk displacement of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and dentofacial asymmetry In orthodontic patients. The subjects consisted of 60 female orthodontic patients between the ages of 18 and 38 years (mean age 23.3 years) who had visited the Department of Orthodontics at Seoul National University Dental Hospital from January 2000 to April 2002. On the basis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their bilateral TMJs, the subjects were divided Into four groups'. bilateral normal group (twenty-one persons); disk displacement of right TMJ group (six persons); disk displacement of left TMJ group (nine persons); and disk displacement of both TMJs group (twenty-four persons) Postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms and diagnostic models which had been taken before orthodontic treatment were measured. In the linear measurements, a line connecting the right and left Latero-Orbitale (Lo) represented the horizontal reference line (H). The vertical reference line (V) was constructed as a line bisecting and running perpendicular to H. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test whether the mean values of measurements between groups were significantly different. In addition, Bonferronil's multiple comparison test was performed at a level of 0.05. The results were as follows; 1 In the diagnostic model analysis, the overjet, nght molar relationship, and left molar relationship were significantly different among the four groups. 2. In the PA cephalometric analysis, differences in the right and left vertical position of the lower first molar and Ag were significantly dissimilar among the four groups. 3. If the disk displacement of TMJ was present on one side, the ipsilateral ramus was shorter, resulting in asymmetry in the vertical position of Ag. This study indicated that dentofacial asymmetry might be related to the disk displacement of TMJ.

  • Objecives : The purpose of the study was to evaluate treatment outcome of mandibular advancement device(MAD) in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients using full night polysomnography and cephalometry. Methods : Twenty-seven OSA patients were confirmed by full night, lab-attended polysomnography. Cephalometric examinations were conducted to obtain SNA, ANB, $AH{\bot}MP$, AH-C3, SPT, PNS-U, NAS, SOAS, MOAS, and HAS. Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) were fabricated and delivered for all subjects. After acclimation period of MAD, the second polysomnographic examinations were conducted in the same manner. Polysomnographic variables were compared between before and after MAD placement. Also, correlation coefficients were calculated between apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and each item of cephalometric parameters. Results : There were significant improvements in total AHI, lowest $SpO_2$, and total arousal index after MAD therapy. Also, there were significant improvements in NREM $SpO_2$ and NREM AHI, but not in REM $SpO_2$ and REM AHI with MAD. Stratifying the sleep stage, there were significant decrease in stage I and significant increases in stage II and REM, but change in stage III was not significant. SNA and SOAS were significantly correlated with total AHI and NAS was significantly correlated with supine AHI. ANB was significantly associate with the effect of MAD. Conclusions : MAD is an effective treatment in OSA patients comparing polysomnographic variables before and after treatment. Cephalometric examination can be useful to evaluate OSA patients and predict treatment outcome of MAD.

  • This study was performed to establish the cephalometric standards and growth changes necessary to create the Growth Forecast without Treatment at adolescence. The data from biennial serial cephalometric radiographs of 25 male and 21 female subjects aged from 8 to 16 years of Normal Koreans were used for this study. The following results were obtained. 1. There were no significant value changes of facial axis angle, fn to palatal plane angle, BA-NA-A angle, lower facial height and lower incisor protrusion as the age increased. 2. From continuous increasing measurements(anterior and posterior cranial babe length, facial axis length, condyle axis length, corpus axis length), the annual growth changes, average annual growth changes and changes for 8 years were obtained. 3. From continuous increasing measurements, significant differences were observed between male and female subjects in most annual growth changes after age of 12 years, average annual growth changes and changes for 8 years (p<0.05). 4. All linear and angular measurements were plotted by using X-Y plotter and personal computer. The visual norms for both sexes were obtained. There was considerable growth, for male, for each period especially the most remarkable growth from the age of 12 to 14. For female, the upmost growth was showed from the age of 10 to 12, and gradually decreased since then.

  • This paper is to verify the effectiveness of 'Hybrid Disaster Management Strategy' that integrates 'RTM(Real-time Monitoring) based On-line' and 'UAV based Off-line' system. For landslide prone area where sensors were installed, the conventional way of risk management so far has entirely relied on RTM data collected from the field through the instrumentation devices. But it's not enough due to the limitation of'Pin-point sensor'which tend to provide with only the localized information where sensors have stayed fixed. It lacks, therefore, the whole picture to be grasped. In this paper, utilizing 'Digital Photogrammetry Software Pix4D', the possibility of inference for the deformation of ungauged area has been reviewed. For this purpose, actual measurement data from RTM were compared with the estimated value from 3D point cloud outcome by UAV, and the consequent results has shown very accurate in terms of RMSE.
