This paper presents a technology for manipulating external devices by Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system. Recently, BCI based rehabilitation and assistance system for disabled people, such as patient of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), general paralysis, and so on, is attracting tremendous interest. Especially, electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is used to organize the BCI system by analyzing the signals, such as evoked potential. The general findings of neurophysiology support an availability of the EEG-based BCI system. We concentrate on the event-related synchronization of motor imagery EEG signal, which have an affinity with an intention for moving control of external device. To analyze the brain activity, short-time Fourier transform and particle swarm optimization are used to optimal feature selection from the preprocessed EEG signals. In our experiment, we can verify that the power spectral density correspond to range mu-rhythm(${\mu}8$~12Hz) have maximum amplitude among the raw signals and most of particles are concentrated in the corresponding region. Result shows accuracy of subject left hand 40% and right hand 38%.

A 5-year-old Chihuahua dog was evaluated for a tetraparesis. The dog was presented with a non-ambulatory tetraparesis and neck pain. Radiography demonstrated an atlantoaxial (AA) subluxation and increased distance between the dorsal arch of the C1 and the dorsal spinous process of the C2. The AA joint was fixed with ventral transarticular fixation using two screws under fluoroscopic guidance. Neck brace was applied during 3 weeks post-operation. After 4 weeks, the dog was fully ambulatory with improved neurological function. Postoperative radiographs confirmed reduction of the luxation and no migration of screws. The dog showed complete resolution of clinical signs without signs of recurrence till 4 months after operation. Proper angulations of screws provided under fluoroscopic guidance, enabled adequate stabilization of the AA joints using ventral transarticular screw fixation which improved neurologic outcome of the patient.

Background: This study is a report on a case of a Wernicke's encephalopathy with quadriplegia, ataxia, and impaired cognition, whose condition was improved by Korean medicine treatment. Case report: A 51-year-old man diagnosed with Wernicke's encephalopathy was treated with acupuncture, Banhabakchulchunma-tang mixed with Ondam-tang-gami (半夏白朮天麻湯合溫膽湯加味), cupping, moxibustion, and rehabilitation. Clinical symptoms were measured with the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Korean Mini Mental Status Exam (K-MMSE), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and a numeric rating scale (NRS). After 22 days of treatment, his clinical symptoms showed improvement. The motor function improved (MMT Rt. side Gr. 4+G/4+G, Lt. side Gr. 4G/4+G → Rt. side Gr. 5-N/4+G, Lt. side Gr. 5-N/4+G), Ataxia was relieved (BBS 3→33), cognition improved (K-MMSE 15→27), ADL scores showed improvement (FIM 58→90, MBI 40→75), and the NRS score decreased for headache (3→0). Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment could be effective in the treatment of patients with Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Pulmonary tuberculosis has intermediate prevalence in Korea. It is known that tuberculosis infection predominantly involves the upper lobes, based on the fact that multiplication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is favored in areas with decreased pulmonary blood flow, impaired lymphatic drainage, and high oxygen tension. We report this case of a 40-year-old man who was brought to our hospital with hemoptysis and dyspnea. Prior to admission, the patient had been in a bedridden state for 15 years due to an injury of the cervical spine 4~5. A 3-Dimensional computed tomography showed predominantly longitudinal distribution of centrilobular nodules along the anterior chest wall, in the left lung. MTB-PCR and AFB culture of bronchial washing fluid revealed pulmonary tuberculosis. This case shows that long-standing supine posture and decreased motion of the anterior chest wall may change the distribution of preferential infection site of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the lung, resulting in a ventral predominance of tuberculosis infection in the quadriplegic patient.

Background: This study aimed to determine the effects of complex Korean medicine treatments on a patient suffering from tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury. Case Summary: A 64-year-old female patient diagnosed with tetraplegia was treated using acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, knee joint motion style treatment (MST), and herbal medicine. Clinical symptoms were measured using the numeric rating scale (NRS) and manual muscle test (MMT). After 67 days of treatment, the NRS score for lower back pain and knee pain decreased from 7 to 3. For the shoulder joint the MMT grade improved from 3+/4+(Rt./Lt.) to 4/5-; in the hip joint, it improved from 3-/3+ to 4/4+. No side effects were observed from the treatments used in this case report. Conclusion: The complex Korean Medicine treatments appeared to be effective in recovering muscle strength and reducing pain in patients with tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury.

Objectives: This is a case report regarding the effect of Korean traditional medicine on vision disorder and quadriplegia in a patient with neuromyelitis optica. Methods: We treated a patient who was diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica with Korean traditional medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine (Gigugyanghyeol-tang gamibang) for 106 days. We evaluated the patient with the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) Grade, and Numeric Rating Scale-11 (NRS-11). Results: After treatment, the patient's symptoms were improved. The ISNCSCI scores increased from 42 to 66 in motor score, from 152 to 196 in sensory score, and from A to D in the ASIA impairment scale; the MBI score increased from 9 to 33, while the score of the MAS Grade decreased from I+ to I, and the NRS-11 scores of vision disorder, spasticity, and tingling decreased from 10 to 7, 3, and 2-3, respectively. Conclusions: Korean traditional medicine may be effective for treatment of vision disorder and quadriplegia in patients with neuromyelitis optica.

Armillaria mellea, honey mushroom is well known as a symbiotic fungus with Gastodia elata, The mycelial yields of the fungus were compared when cultured with various broth media. The highest yield of cell mass, 2.31 g dry weight/50mL, was obtained on germinated-malt extract broth (GMEB). The optimal broth concentration which was measured hand refractometer for mycelium production was $15\;Brix^{\circ}$. The optimal conditions estimated with response surface methodology under temperature, pH and incubation period were $25.9^{\circ}C$, pH 5.72, 15.22 days, respectively, on GMEB having $15\;Brix^{\circ}$ concentration for mycelial production of A. mellea.

This study is a case report of Korean medicine treatment for a patient with quadriplegia and impaired cognition as neurological sequelae after ingestion of herbicides. A 59-year-old man with toxic encephalopathy and hypoxic encephalopathy after the ingestion of herbicides was treated with acupuncture, Hyulbuchuko-tang mixed with Ondam-tang-gami (血府逐瘀湯合溫膽湯加味), cupping, moxibustion, and rehabilitation. Clinical symptoms were measured with the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Korean Mini Mental Status Exam (K-MMSE), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and Modified Barthel Index (MBI). After three months of treatment, clinical symptoms improved. The motor function improved (MMT on both sides, Gr. 3+F/4G→Gr. 4-G~4G/4+G), cognition improved (K-MMSE, 13→21), and ADL (Activities of Daily Living) scores also improved (FIM 41→74; MBI 20→63). Korean medical treatment could effectively treat neurological sequelae after ingestion of herbicides in this case.

This study reported the case of a patient with quadriparesis due to cerebral aneurysm rupture, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) treated with Korean medicine. The patient was treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine (mainly Tonggyuhwalhyeol-tang-gagam), Western medicine, moxibustion, cupping, and rehabilitative therapy for 75 days, and improved after administration. After treatment, the Manual Muscle Test grade improved from 4/4-/3+/3 to 4+/4+/4+/4+, the Korean version of the modified Barthel Index score improved from 9 to 100, the National Institute of Health's Stroke Scale score improved from 2 to 0, the Global Deterioration Scale score improved from 3 to 2, and the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination score improved from 22 to 30. During administration, the patient did not show seizures, shock, or loss of consciousness, and the vital signs were stable in the normal range. We followed up the brain computed tomography findings for 2 times and found that there was no definite evidence of intracranial hemorrhage or IVH or re-rupture or rebleeding after Korean medicine treatment. This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment with blood-invigorating and stasis-removing herbs could be a safe and effective intervention option for improving quadriparesis due to cerebral aneurysm rupture and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

A 3-year-old intact female Dachshund was referred due to paraplegia and cool extremities. History taking, physical examination, neurological examination, and blood profiling studies were evaluated to determine the diagnosis. Based on abdominal ultrasound and echocardiograph, features suggestive of adult heartworm were detected in aberrant places. The result of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing with a commercial heartworm antigen kit was positive. The dog fell into a comatose state, and the client requested the dog be euthanized. On post-mortem examination, the patient was diagnosed with ectopic parasitism of heartworm in the left side of heart, aorta, aorta abdominalis, and iliac arteries, a circumstance that induced systemic thromboembolism. This case report describes the clinical, diagnostic imaging, and necropsy findings of canine ectopic parasitism of heartworm.
