Development and Application of Practice Manual Focused on Science Topic Selection Stage in General High School (일반계 고등학교 과학과제 연구 수업의 주제 선정을 위한 실천 매뉴얼 개발 및 적용)

  • This study focuses on the fact that students and teachers commonly have difficulty in 'selecting the topic' in many activities including student-led research that is conducted from topic selection to the drawing of conclusion. The purpose of this study is to develop a manual for science teaching research. The instructional manuals of 4 stages were developed based on practical knowledge that can be implemented in the actual class through previous research and literature. Each stage is composed of , , , and . In the third stage, students are expected to find scientific questions and develop them into research topics through detailed class research on newspaper articles, scientific magazines, traditional knowledge, proverbs, daily life, and textbook experiments. In the experimental group, the final research topic was selected through a variety of sources such as textbook experiments, proverbs, YouTube images, newspaper articles, individual WHY NOTEs, and understood the conditions of the scientific research topic and expressed the variables in the research title. However, in the control group, some students did not consider the research scope of the selected research subjects to be specific or not to be able to study at their level. As a result of giving the students as much autonomy as possible, many groups did not fully understand the previous research and submitted it. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that development and use of a 'topic selection stage' centered practice manual for general high school teachers would not only improve the students' abilities to discover solutions to scientific questions, but it will also help shift their attitudes towards science in a positive direction.

Changes in Korean Consumers' Perception on Food Preservatives by a Risk Communication Booklet

  • Food preservatives are very important food additives for the biological and chemical safety of processed foods. The purposes of this study were to investigate Korean consumer's perception and information needs on food preservatives, to develop an educational booklet as a risk communication material on food preservatives, and to assess the educational effect of the developed booklet. To understand perception on food preservatives, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted by 381 parents having elementary school students at Seoul and Geoynggi area in Korea. Based on the survey results, brain storming of the authors along with consultation from the professionals, we developed a risk communication booklet about food preservatives. It was exposed to 35 parents of elementary school children, and their evaluation was collected by using a questionnaire and analyzed statistically. Respondents considered food safety (44.8%) as the most important factor while purchasing processed foods. They still perceived food additives as the most hazardous one (41.5%), and among those, food preservatives were the most concerned (45.9%). Total 67.7% of the respondents considered the consumption of food preservatives as hazardous or very hazardous. However, 90.6% of respondents did not have any educational experience about food additives and food preservatives. Based on their information needs, a science-based booklet consisting of the definition, classification, safety, intake, and management of food preservatives was developed. When the booklet titled as 'Food preservatives, Just Know Them!' was exposed to the parents via elementary school teacher, their negative perceptions on food additives and food preservatives were changed positively by increasing the understanding level on preservatives from 18.9% to 90.9% and obtaining 72.7% positive answers on their safety. Therefore, it could be used as an effective risk communication material on food preservatives.

Development and Effect of Cooperative Consumption Education Program Using Design Thinking in Home Economics Education: Focusing on the Improvement of Cooperative Problem Solving Competency of Middle School Students (디자인씽킹을 활용한 가정교과 협력적 소비 교육 프로그램의 개발 및 적용 효과: 중학생의 협력적 문제해결 역량 향상을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and implement cooperative consumption education programs using design thinking in middle school home economics education classes to understand the impact on students' cooperative problem solving competency. Accordingly, a cooperative consumption education program based on design thinking was developed according to the ADDIE model, and the evaluation was conducted on a total of 25 students. The results of the study were as follows. First, based on prior research, we developed a consumption education program based on D. school's design thinking process under the theme of 'Creating a Shared School' for the practice of cooperative consumption. As a result of expert validity verification of the teaching/learning course plan and workbook for the eight sessions, the average question was 4.72 (out of 5 points) and the average CVI was 0.93, indicating that the content validity and field suitability were excellent. Second, to summarize the results achieved from the implementation of the cooperative consumption education program, the pre-/post-test using the revised and supplemented cooperative problem-solving competency tool, and the open-ended survey, It was confirmed that the developed program had a significant effect on improving not only the students' knowledge and perceived necessity for cooperative consumption along with the awareness of practice, but also the cooperative problem-solving competency. As a follow-up study, we propose to expand the research to a wider audience, and to further conduct research and develop programs applied with design thinking in home economics curriculum and in consumer competency development. This study confirmed that cooperative consumption education programs using design thinking are effective in improving youth's cooperative problem-solving competency and is meaningful in that they developed consumption education programs under the theme of 'cooperative consumption' in response to changing consumer education needs.

Development and Feasibility Study of the Nature of Science Instrument for Elementary School Students (초등학생용 과학의 본성 검사 도구 개발 및 타당성 검토)

  • In this study, the Nature of Science (NOS) instrument for elementary school students in the form of open questionnaires was developed specifically to reveal elementary school students' perceptions of the NOS, and its validity and effectiveness were investigated. To develop a NOS instrument for elementary school students, problems that may occur when applying the existing NOS instruments to elementary school students were analyzed and based on this, the development direction of the NOS instrument was established. In addition, after selecting seven NOS types suitable for the level of elementary school students, the preliminary instrument was produced by modifying and supplementing the items in the existing instruments for each type or by developing new items. Finally, the NOS instrument consisting of eight questions was developed by adding one question asking for a comprehensive understanding of science to seven questions related to each type of NOS after a content validity test of the science education expert group. To verify the practical effect of the developed instrument, pre- and post-tests were conducted on 50 students in two classes of sixth grade at two elementary schools in Seoul: 'existing instrument → development instrument' in one class, and 'development instrument → existing instrument' in the other class. The collected data were then compared and evaluated through summary content analysis and analyzed by executing the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. As a result of comparing and analyzing students' responses to the existing NOS instrument and the developed NOS instrument, students' perspectives on the NOS were more diverse when using the developed instrument, and the level of error in the response caused by misinterpreting the intention of the question was reduced. In addition, when using the developed instrument, the responses of the majority of students at a statistically significant level changed more specifically. In this study, the implications for the development of NOS instruments suitable for elementary school students were discussed based on these results.

Effects of the Exercise Program Combined with Telephone Coaching on Postural Balance, Grip Strength and Depression of Elderly Living Alone in the Community (전화코칭을 병행한 운동 프로그램이 지역사회 거주 독거 노인의 균형능력, 악력 및 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • This study is an experimental study on the single group pre-post test design for the effects of the exercise program combined with telephone coaching on postural balance, grip strength and depression of the elderly living alone. The subjects of this study were 20 elderly living alone who registered at a senior welfare center located in S City, Gyeonggi-do. A total of 12 session programs were applied from July 3 to October 14, 2021. Before and after the program, the participant's home was visited and 4 stage standing balance test(4 SBT), grip strength and depression were measured. The contents of the intervention consisted of elastic bands and grip balls, and weekly telephone coaching interventions were provided. In the result of this study, the exercise program combined with telephone coaching were statistically significant differences in 4 SBT(3stage)(t=-2.37, p=.029), 4 SBT(4stage)(t=-2.46, p=.024), right grip strength(t=-2.18. p=.042) and depression(t=2.82, p<.001). Therefore, it is expected that the exercise program combined with telephone coaching can be applied as a nursing intervention to improve postural balance, grip strength and reduce depression in the elderly living alone in the community.

Application and Evaluation of the Early Adulthood Hands-on Education Programs for the Sustainable Household Practices (성인전기 가정생활 환경교육 실습 프로그램의 적용과 평가)

  • This study aims to present a case of implementing educational programs that integrate theory and experience, leading to practical environmental conservation practices within households, and to analyze and evaluate their effectiveness. To achieve these goals, various hands-on environmental education programs related to family life, including carbon-neutral practices, clothing, food, housing, and design, were implemented for early adulthood. Pre- and post-surveys provided by the Korea Environmental Preservation Association were utilized to assess awareness and willingness to engage in environmental conservation among participants, and consultation with an expert was conducted to understand the effectiveness of the educational programs. As a result, the findings confirmed a notable enhancement in participants' environmental consciousness and commitment to action following the program compared to pre-program levels. The results of open-ended questions showed that the content participants wanted to learn and what they actually learned in the classes were similar, validating the effectiveness of the program. The consultation results indicated that presenting various practical methods related to household life would be effective; however, there was a suggestion for the need to consider aspects such as post-practical food management and the unique characteristics of multicultural household members when developing educational programs. This educational initiative holds promise for instigating perceptible shifts in the awareness and proactive engagement of young adults across the spectrum of household dynamics, thereby contributing significantly to the establishment of sustainable living paradigms.
