An Analysis of Changes and Trends in Evaluation Criteria for Librarians' Job Satisfaction (사서직무만족도 평가요인의 변화추이 분석)

  • Researches on librarians' job satisfaction in Korea have been conducted for nearly 40 years. However, it is difficult to find the criteria that specifically evaluate librarians' job satisfaction, and most of the studies have used evaluation criteria developed oversees a long time ago. For these reasons, it is necessary to investigate how librarians' job satisfaction levels have been measured. A total of 68 theses and dissertations were reviewed by dividing period into 10 years backwards from 2016. The chronological changes and trends of evaluation factors were examined and differences were sought among types of libraries. As a result, it was confirmed that there were various changes in the evaluation factors. A standard indicator consisting of 12 evaluation factors and 39 items was proposed by applying three principles that the criteria should reflect factors, questions, and current status.

Relation of Job Satisfaction and Cognitive Style of Librarians in Academic Library (대학도서관 사서들의 직무만족도와 인지양식과의 관계)

  • Attitude of librarian's Job satisfaction was shown differently by individual characteristic, personality, and cognitive structure in the same circumstance. This means that it is related to the personal psychological difference and subjective thinking. The purpose of this study is to analyze the psychological difference of libraians, especially their Cognitive style and to know what acts the difference and effect in Job satisfaction. The methodology of the study is a suvey of 160 librarians in 11 academic libraries at Pusan. The results are as fellows. In General, they were satisfied with ph than the normal level ane the most dissatisfied with promotion. They had no difference of Cognitive style with a demographic characteristics, had a similar difference with job satisfation, and the older and the higher position peoples were satisfied with thou ph. Cognitive style firly effect at the ph satisfation. Field dependence librarians are more satisfied with their job than field independence librarians. Field independence librarians are oppropriate to technical Services and field dependence librarians are more oppropriate for public services. In conclusion, they demonstrated that it Is very important to consider each psychological difference with cognitive style.

A Study on the Job Satisfaction of School Library Itinerant Librarians (학교도서관 순회사서 직무만족도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the current status of staff in school libraries and to provide suggestions for the development of these facilities through the job satisfaction of itinerant librarians, who act as support for schools which lack permanent staff. For employees in the South Korean provinces of South Jeolla, North Gyeongsan and South Gyeonsan, regions which currently operate using systems of itinerant librarians, the general status, work characteristics and systems were identified, and job satisfaction was surveyed. As a result of the survey, librarians may be in charge of anywhere from ten to two hundred schools, with approximately 30% of them being affiliated with public libraries in various municipalities. The overall job satisfaction averaged out to a score of 3.45 out of 5, with the categories of duties (4.15), a feeling of accomplishment (3.89) and communication (3.70) showing above average results, while opportunities for promotion (2.08) and job training (1.96) were on the lower end of the scale. For better job satisfaction, this study suggests an increase in the number of itinerant librarians, more job training, and having these professionals be affiliated with school boards rather than public libraries.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the character types and job satisfaction of the college university librarians by using the Enneagram personality analysis tools. The study of the job satisfaction still remains as a permanent research subject in the actual field because it is directly related with library service. Furthermore, this study intends to develop the desirable professional skills of the librarians through presenting the distinctive characters that can increase the job satisfaction. It will also provide the basic materials for educating the librarians with man-power development program which can also include the distinctive characters.

The Impacts of Information Technology on Job Satisfaction among Academic Librarians in Korea (대학도서관의 정보기술 도입이 사서의 직무만족에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to maximize the efficiency of university libraries' human resources management by determining the followings : the relationship between the level of information technology(1T) implement and the job satisfaction of the librarians, the main factors that affect job satisfaction, and how organizational characteristics and individual characteristics affect job satisfaction. Questionnaire was sent to 485 librarians from 27 universities chosen by stratified sampling and the methods of ANOVA, T-test, and correlation analysis were used. The results of the analysis are as follows. 1) there is a significant difference in the level of job satisfaction and the motivation factor according to the level of implementation of IT. 2) There is a relatively high correlation among the participation in decision making, the leadership in implementing the IT, the IT support of the CEO and job satisfaction. 3) There is a significant difference in job satisfaction by the level of computer skills, and a relatively high correlation is shown in the training experience while implementing the IT and job satisfaction.

  • To identify key job duties and core competencies of data librarians, this study conducted content analyses of 75 U.S. job advertisements of data librarians and statistical analyses of 105 responses from incumbent data librarians. As a result, the key job duties identified are jobs related to collaboration, workshops, trainings, conferences, data service, research consultation, and research support. Core competencies identified are communication skills, teaching, diversity, inclusion, and equality, data management, and data tool. This study is significant in that it analyzed the key duties and core competencies of the data librarians using the most up-to-date data and opinions collected from incumbent people. It can be a basis for future study such as on job satisfaction, user satisfaction, and perception surveys for data librarians.

  • This study aims at analyzing librarians' job satisfaction at public libraries in Dae-gu, according to various management and employment styles. As a theoretical study, it discusses management styles of public libraries and argues concepts and factors of job satisfaction. Based on the discussion the study selects 7 factors of job satisfaction and conducts a survey. All the respondents are satisfactory to 4 factors; job, co-worker, superior officer, and business affairs, but are not satisfactory to 3 factors; wages, welfare, and employment. There are differences between contract managed libraries and direct managed libraries. At local government's contract managed libraries there is no difference in a sense of job insecurity between full-time and part-time librarians. The remarkable differences between full-time and part-time librarians are concerning participation in decision making processes and discretion in business affairs. The most significant differences between them are about wages, welfare and employment.

A Study on Correlation between Work Environment Factors and Job Satisfaction of Librarians Working in Different Types of Libraries (관종별 도서관 사서의 직무환경요인과 직무만족도의 상관성 연구)

  • In this study, libraries of national and public universities, libraries of private universities, libraries of colleges, public libraries of local governments were selected to measure, compare and analyze the differences in job satisfaction of librarians working in different types of libraries. As for measurement items, 10 factors for job satisfaction were chosen. In doing so, this researcher compared and analyzed the overall job satisfaction and work satisfaction, employment satisfaction, satisfaction with promotion system, satisfaction with work distribution, satisfaction with payment system, satisfaction with service system, satisfaction with facility environment, satisfaction with educational training, satisfaction with welfare system, and satisfaction with personal relations. The results of the analysis on job satisfaction with each factor by librarians working in different types of libraries are presented as follows. First, the overall job satisfaction value of the librarians was 3.940, which means relatively high satisfaction, and in terms of a type of library, libraries of private universities showed the highest value, and the next ones were found to be libraries of colleges, public libraries and libraries of national and public libraries. Secondly, regarding the ranking of the overall satisfaction with the selected 10 job satisfaction factors by different types of libraries, educational training was found to rank the highest, and the next ones were surveyed to be the job, the service system, the personal relations, the employment system, the work distribution, the facility environment, the payment system, the welfare system, and the promotion system.

A Meta-Analysis of Librarians' Job Satisfaction Studies (사서의 직무만족도에 관한 메타분석 연구)

  • This study conducted meta-analysis of librarians' job satisfaction using the Hedges & Olkin's Effect Size Model. Sex and Marrage as group variables, and Total Satisfaction and 7 sub-variables(Work Itself, Salary, Promotion, Supervision, Working Conditions, Social Recognition, Self-actualization) as dependent variables were selected from 27 studies. The effect sizes between men and women were significantly different on Supervision, Working conditions, Promotion, and Social Recognition, of which first two were homogeneous. But the difference of Social Recognition was not significant in Random Effect Model. The effect sizes difference between married and unmarried were significant on Self Recognition, Salary, and Work Itself. However the difference of Work Itself was not significant in Random Effect Model. Study Year could not be a moderator.
