  • A new design technique is presented to stabilize cut slopes in cohesive soils by use of piles. The design method can consider systematically factors such as the gradient and height of slope, the number and position of pile's rows, the interval and stiffness of piles, etc. The design method is established on the basis of the stability analysis of slope with rows of piles. The basic concept applied in the stability analysis is that the soil across the open space between piles can be retained by the arching action of the soil, when a row of piles is installed in soil undergoing lateral movement such as landslides. To obtain the whole stability of slope containing piles, two kinds of analyses for the pile-stability and the slope- stability must be performed simultaneously. An instrumentation system has been installed at a cut slope in cohesive soil, which has been designed according to the presented design process. The behavior of both the piles and the soil across the open space between piles is observed precisely. The result of instrumentation shows that the cut slope has been stabilized by the contribution of stabilizing effect of piles on the slope stability in cohesive soil.

  • Soil nailing is used as a method of slope stabilization and excavation support. The design method of soil nail are based on experience or assumption of interaction between soil and reinforcement. Most design methods simply considers the tension of reinforcement for analysis of slope stabilization. Soil nails interact with soils under combined loading of shear and tension. Jewell & Pedley suggested a design equation of shear force with bending stiffness and discussed that the magnitude of the maximum shear force is small in comparison with the maximum axal force. However, they have used a very conservative limiting bearing stress on nails. This paper discusses that the shear strength of soil nails should not be disregarded with proper bearing stresses on nails. The modified FHWA design method was proposed by considering shear forces on nails with bending stiffness.

  • Stability analysis of rocky embankment slopes is done by both the limit equilibrium method and the finite difference method. The height or the rocky embankment is approximately 40 m and the side slope is 1 vertical to 1.5 horizontal. The cohesion and internal friction angle of rock debris are assumed zero and 43$^{\circ}$, respectively. For finite difference analysis, strength reduction method is used to calculate the saft factor of the slope. As a result, the safety factor of the slope is discovered to be 1.4 by using either methods. Considering that the design criteria of the safety factor is 1.3, it can be judged that the rock fragments embankment slope is in a stable state.

  • Technical design codes of slope stability for port structures were studied by comparing local Korean code with international codes; Japanese, EC and China codes. Three international design codes are based on limit state design method. Although Chinese code was based on the modified Fellenius method in slope stability analyses, it is currently changing to the simplified Bishop method. In Eurocode, the Morgenstern & Price method or the Bishop method is recommended. In Japanese code, however, the modified Fellenius method is preferentially recommended, but the simplified Bishop method could be alternatively used in case of thick sandy ground conditions. As for design parameter determination, Eurocode has stipulated comprehensive partial factors and partial material factors, however Japanese code has clarified empirical partial material factors for each port structure. Chinese code, the minimum ranges of the comprehensive partial factors are stipulated, and the use of the strength index by specific tests is concretely clarified with the safety condition. Case study of slope stability analyses showed the safety factors were higher in order of Chinese, Japanese and Eurocode, respectively.

  • Conventional slope stability analysis is focused on calculating minimum factor of safety or maximum probability of failure. To minimize inherent uncertainty of soil properties and analytical model and to reflect various analytical models and its failure shape in slope stability analysis, slope stability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for multi failure mode was proposed. Linear programming recently introduced in system reliability analysis was used for calculation of simultaneous failure probability. System reliability analysis for various analytical models could be executed by this method. Optimum design to determine angle of a simple slope is executed for multi failure mode using linear programming. Because of complex consideration for various failure shapes and modes, it is possible to secure advanced safety by using simultaneous failure probability.

  • In this study, a slope stability chart for assessing stability of homogeneous simple soil slopes is proposed. Most existing slope stability charts are based on limit equilibrium method, which is not rigorous in mechanical standpoint. Meanwhile, limit analysis based on the principle of virtual work and the bound theorems of plasticity is suitable for evaluating the stability of geotechnical structures such as slope due to its simplicity in computation and mechanical rigor. Numerical limit analysis taking advantage of finite elements and linear programming can consider various slope conditions and, in addition, find the optimum stability solution with effeciency. In this study, a numerical limit analysis program in terms of effective stress is developed and a mechanically rigorous slope stability chart is proposed by performing stability analyses for various slope conditions. Pore pressure ratio, commonly used in stability charts, is applied to consider the effects of pore pressure for effective stress analysis. As a result of comparison between proposed stability chart and Spencer's stability chart, it was found that Spencer's chart solutions are biased to lower bound which means conservative in design.

  • Slope collapse occurs mostly at the rainy season or thawing season in Korea. From a engineer point of view, the design criterion in recent of soil slopes during the rainfall have a conservative tendency because a slope stability is evaluated in the condition that ground water level is located in the surface. However, for the rational design of soil slopes during rainfall, the raining conditions and the unsaturated soil characteristics of soil slopes have to be considered. For the unsaturated soil characteristics of soil slopes, the laboratory tests for unsaturated soils and the seepage analyses for the raining conditions have to be performed. Due to these difficulties, a conservative design of soil slopes in the current design criterion has been carried out. In this paper, therefore, a simple design method is proposed. The method is considered to the unsaturated soil characteristics and the results of seepage analysis without numerical analysis. To verify the suggested design method, it is compared with both analysis results by current design criterion and analysis results based on the seepage analysis. Through the comparative study, it was found that the current design criterion has been excessively conservative. Hence, simple design method in this study was evaluated as the rational design for the soil slopes during rainfall.

  • There are many cuts or natural rock slopes that remain stable for a long time in the natural environment with steep slopes ($65^{\circ}$ to $85^{\circ}$). In terms of design practice, the rock mass consisting of similar rock condition and geological structures is defined as a good continuum rock slope, and during the process of decision making angle of this rock slope, it will be important to establish the geotechnical properties estimating method of the continuum rock on the process of stability analysis in the early stages of design and construction. In this study, the stability analysis of a good continuum rock slope that can be designed as a steep slope proposed a practical method of estimating the shear strength by induced from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, and in addition, the design applicability was evaluated through the stability analysis of steep rock slope. The existing method of estimating the shear strength was inadequate for practical use in the design, as the equivalent M-C shear strength corresponding to the H-B envelope changes sensitively, even with small variations in confining stress. To compensate for this problem, it was proposed to estimate equivalent M-C shear strength by iso-angle division method. To verify the design applicability of the iso-angle division method, the results of the safety factor and the displacement according to the change in angle of the cut slope constructed at the existing working design site were reviewed. The safety factor is FS=16~59 on the 1:0.5 slope, FS=12~52 on the 1:0.3 slope, most of which show a 10~12 percent reduction. Displacement is 0.126 to 0.975 mm on the 1:0.5 slope, 0.152 to 1.158 mm on the 1:0.3 slope, and represents an increase of 10 to 15%. This is a slightly change in normal proportion and is in good condition in terms of stability. In terms practical the working design, it was confirmed that applying the shear strength estimated by Iso-angle division method derived from the H-B failure criterion as a universal shear strength for a good continuum rock mass slope was also able to produce stable and economic results. The procedure for stability analysis using LEM (Limit Equilibrium Analysis Method) and FEM (Finite Element Analysis Method) will also be practical in the rock slope where is not distributed fault. The study was conducted by selecting the slope of study area as a good rock condition, establishing a verification for which it can be applied universal to a various rock conditions will be a research subject later on.

  • In this study, the design method of slope reinforced by the earth retention systems were systematically developed, and the flow chart of design procedure fur each system were constructed to design the slope rationally. The proposed design method is composed of 5 steps such as field condition investigation step, slope design step, landslide occurrence prediction step, slope failure scale estimation step and reinforcement countermeasure selection step. The quantitative standard of slope failure scale was established based on the arrangement of various overseas standards which is estimating the slope failure, and the analysis of slope failure scale which is occurred in the country. The slope failure scale is classified into three categories the small scale of slope failure is less than $150m^3$ of slope failure volume, the middle scale of slope failure is from $150m^3$ to $900m^3$ and the large scale of slope failure is more than $900m^3$. The earth retention system could be selected by the proposed slope failure scale based on the slope failure volume. Meanwhile, the design methods of earth retention system such as piles, soil nails and anchors were developed. The optimal countermeasure for slope stability could be proposed using above design methods.
