Deformation of a slope at a coal waste depot and the natural slope under the depot was surveyed and investigated at Dogye village in Samcheock city, Gangwon Province. To investigate the behaviors of the slopes, wire sensors and a rain gauge were installed on the crest of the waste depot slope and inclinometers were installed in the natural slope. The results of deformation monitoring at the crest of the waste depot slope using wire sensors revealed increased deformation with increasing cumulative rainfall. The results of monitoring horizontal deformation of the natural slope revealed that maximum horizontal deformation was also affected by cumulative precipitation. However, the groundwater level at the natural slope showed no change with rainfall. These measurements confirm that deformation at coal mine waste depots is closely related to precipitation, indicating that self-loading at such depots increases with rainfall infiltration, thus causing deformation of the waste depot slope. In addition, increasing the self-load of the coal mine waste depot may cause deformation of the underlying natural slope.

Recently, the need of alternate energy resources is increasing due to the global warming issue. The natural gas buried in the extremely cold regions of Alaska and Siberia is of much interest these days. However, the construction standards are needed to be used in extremely cold regions. Particularly, more research work need to be carried out on the trench stability so that the safety of the workers is ensured and the damage to the construction machinery can also be reduced resulting in smaller construction period. In this study, the process for lowering of the pipelines of 30 and 40 in. diameters in the ground conditions (silt and peat) of Yakutsk, Russia was analyzed. The slopes of the ground surface were considered as $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and $20^{\circ}$ to be excavated in summer and winter. The analysis results show that the weight of pipelayer affects the trench stability. Numerical analysis was performed by considering the types of pipelayers, distance between the trench and pipelayer, and the distance between the pipelayers placed longitudinally along the trench. The results show that as the distance between the pipelayer and the trench decreases, the factor of safety of the slope decreases with an increase in the slope of the ground surface. When the slope of the ground surface was $20^{\circ}$, the breakout surface was anticipated to continue from the pipelayer to the trench boundary. In winter season, stability problem of the trench was not observed when the slope of the ground surface was less than $20^{\circ}$.
A series of studies such as geological logging data analysis, detailed geological survey, rock mass evaluation, in-situ and laboratory tests, rock strength and mechanical properties of the rock were concerned. The stability of the slope were carried out inorder to design the pit slope and individual benches using the stereographic projection analysis and numerical methods in Roto Pit of Pasir coal field. The bedding plane was one of the major discontinuities in the Roto Pit and the dip of which is about 60$^{\circ}$ in the northern part and 83$^{\circ}$ in the southern part. The dip of bedding becomes steeper from north to south. The plane and toppling failures are presented in many slopes. In laboratory test the average uniaxial compressive strength of mudstone was 9MPa and that of weak sandstone was 10MPa. In-situ test showed that the rocks of Roto north mining area are mostly weak enough to be classified in grade from R2(weak) to R3(medium strong weak) and the coal is classified in grades from R1(Very weak) to R2(Weak). The detailed stability analysis were carried out on 4 areas of Roto north (east, west, south and north), and 2 areas of Roto south(east and west). In this paper, the minimum factor of safety was set to 1.2 which is a general criterion for open pit mines. Using the stereographic projection analysis and the limit equilibrium method, slope angles were calculated as 30∼36$^{\circ}$ for a factor of safety greater than 1.2. Then these results were re-evaluated by numerical analysis using FLAC. The final slope angles were determined by rational described above. A final slope of 34 degrees can guarantee the stability for the eastern part of the Roto north area, 33 degrees for the western part, 35 degrees for the northern part and 35 degrees for the southern part. For the Roto south area, 36 degrees was suggested for both sides of the pit. Once the pit slope is designed based on the stability analysis and the safety measures, the stability of slope should be checked periodically during the mining operations. Because the slope face will be exposed long time to the rain fall, a study such aspreventive measures against weathering and erosion is highly recommended to be implemented.

Based on the data obtained from field investigation and soil testing to slope hazards occurrence section and non-occurrence section in crystalline rocks like gneiss, granite, and so on, a prediction model was developed by the use of a decision tree model. The classification standard of the selected prediction model is composed of the slope angle, the coefficient of permeability and the void ratio in the order. The computer program, SHAPP ver. 1.0 for prediction of slope hazards around an important national facilities using GIS technique and the developed model. To prove the developed prediction model and the computer program, the field data surveyed from Jumunjin, Gangneung city were compared with the prediction result in the same site. As the result of comparison, the real occurrence location of slope hazards was similar to the predicted section. Through the continuous study, the accuracy about prediction result of slope hazards will be upgraded and the computer program will be commonly used in practical.
In order to evaluate the TOPMODEL's prediction ability for spatial distribution of water table depths, two major assumptions and governing equation of water table depth are tested. For the test, data of hydrological observations are used and a soil survey is made in the steep hillslope with thin soils. Responses of water table and hydraulic properties of soil are coincident with two major assumptions of the TOPMODEL's such as water table gradient parallel to the local topographical slope and exponential decline in transmissivity with depths. Soil texture and the decline rate of transmissivity(f) we homogeneous in space at the 0∼0.3m depths of the soil of the hillslope, but they are heterogeneous in space below its 0.3m depths due to the vertical change of soil texture and the ‘f’. It is shown that the TOPMODEL's equation can be used for simulating distribution of water table depth at the depths with uniform values of the 'f'.
Geomorphological properties for the phylite-derived soil were examined to relate processes to four landscape positions, shoulder, backslope, footslope, and toeslope in Chungbuk. The distribution of Ogcheon-geology system was 216 thousand ha in South Korea. 2 orders, 3 suborders, 4 great groups, 5 subgroups, and 9 series were mapped. Soil color was interlocked by landscape. Soil color index values and $Fe_2O_3$ contents increased with soil-drainge class. Silt/clay and Ca/Mg ratios tended to narrow wish elevation and decreased with depth. Therefore, profile development or age on the landscape position was shoulder>backslope>footslope>toeslope. Color index(C2m) has a sighificant correlation with $Fe_2O_3$, in soil profile($r=0.777^{**}$). Pedologic type was continuity/discontinuity and soil property changes of depth<12cm would have a continous function.

Automated weather stations were installed at 9 locations with, three different elevations, (i.e., 50m, 100m, and 300m a.s.l.) with different slope and aspect in a small watershed ($50km^2$ area). Air temperature at 1500 LST and solar radiation accumulated for 1100-1500 LST were collected from January to December 2012. Topography of the study area was defined by a $30{\times}30$ m digital elevation model (DEM) grid. Accumulated solar irradiance was calculated for each location with the spatially averaged slope and aspect of surrounding circles with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 grid cell radii, respectively. The 1500 LST air temperature from clear sky conditions with zero cloud amount was regressed to the 1100-1500 LST solar irradiance at 9 locations. We found the highest coefficient of determination ($r^2$ = 0.544) at 25 grid cell radius and the temperature variation in this study was explained by Y = 0.8309X + 0.0438, where Y is 1500 LST temperature (in $^{\circ}C$) and X is 1100-1500 LST accumulated solar irradiance (in $MJ/m^2$).

The structural analysis such as rigid frame analysis has been used for the design of cut and cover tunnel due to its simplicity and convenience. This analysis, however, could not account for the geometrical factors such as interface elements, slope of excavation plane, distance between lining and excavation plane, etc. To develop the analysis technique and design technology for the cut and cover tunnel, in this study, the numerical analyses considering not only geometrical but geotechnical factors are conducted. Especially, the effects on the mechanical behaviors of cut and cover tunnel due to the slope of excavation plane and the distance between lining and excavation plane are mainly focused in this study.
A series of numerical experiments is performed to compare the characteristics of outflow hydrograph using linear and nonlinear Muskingum-Cunge methods for two cases: (a) sinusoidal inflow hydrographs and (b) rainfall inputs. The nonlinear method shows the steepening of the rising limb, coupled with a corresponding flattening of the receding limb. The linear method conserves mass exactly. In contrast, the nonlinear method is subject to a gain and a loss of mass. The loss of mass and the subsidence of peak outflow increases with a mild slope, a small baseflow $q_b$ and a large peak inflow to baseflow ratio $q_p/q_b$. A shock wave and associated numerical instability results in the increase of mass for a steep slope and a large $q_p/q_b$ ratio. While the linear method depends on the reference flow per unit-width, the nonlinear method depends on a baseflow and the $q_p/q_b$ ratio. It is found that, unlike for the sinusoidal inflow, the outflow for the rainfall inputs conserves mass fairly exactly in the nonlinear method.
