  • A feeding experiment was conducted using juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) to investigate the optimum level of supplemental vitamin and/or mineral premixes in a formulated diet for practical feed formulation. Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 100 mg were fed the diets containing different levels of vitamin premix ($0\%,\;0.5\%,\;1.0\%$ and $2\%$) and /or mineral premix($0\%,\;2\%,\;4\%$ and $6\%$) for 4 months. Survival rates of abalone showed no distinctive trend by the levels of dietary vitamin premixes. Weight gain, shell growth and soft body weight of abalone were not significantly affected by the different dietary vitamin and/or mineral premixes (P>0,05). Moisture, protein and lipid contents of soft body were influenced by experimental diets (P<0.05) but these differences also had no definite trends by levels of vitamin and/or mineral premixes. These data indicate that supplemental vitamin or mineral premix is not needed in this formulated diet, therefore price of diet for juvenile abalone could be reduced.

  • In order to verify whether Zophobas atratus is an edible insect, the nutrients and harmful substances of Z. atratus larvae reared with an artificial diet (AD) and wheat bran (WB) were compared and analyzed. Based on dry weight, the crude protein content of Z. atratus larvae reared with an AD was 62.4%, 1.4 times higher than that of those reared with WB (45.2%). The crude fat content was 20.5% in the AD group, 2.3 times less than in the WB group (46.3%). The leucine content was 1.4 times higher in the AD group (4.2%) than in the WB group (3.0%). The glutamic acid content of nonessential amino acids was 1.3 times higher in the AD group (7.0%) than in the WB group (5.3%). The oleic acid content was 1.4 times higher in the WB group (37.0%) than in the AD group (26.7%). The potassium content was 1.1 times higher in the AD group (975.9 mg/100 g) than in the WB group (872.9 mg/100 g). According to the results of the toxic substances analysis, the lead and cadmium levels of the WB and AD groups were standard for edible insects. Pathogenic microorganisms, such as E. coli and salmonella, were not detected in either group. According to the results of the present analysis of nutrition and harmful substances, Z. atratus larvae raised on an AD are safe and contain various nutrients. Therefore, such larvae could be useful sources of food and feed.

  • The present study was conducted to examine the fermentation characteristics and effective degradability (ED) in the rumen, and whole tract digestibility of whole crop silage based TMR in comparison with conventional separate feeding of concentrate and roughage. Three ruminally fistulated non-lactating Holstein cattle were used in a 3 $\times$ 3 Latin square design. The cattle were fed 8kg of whole crop barley silage based TMR (BS-TMR) or 8kg (DM basis) of whole crop rye silage based TMR (RS-TMR) twice (08:00 and 18:00) daily in an equal amount. The cattle were also fed concentrate (5.6kg) and rice straw (1.4kg) seperately (DM basis, Control) twice daily in an equal amount. The both silages were included in TMR at 20% level (as fed basis). pH in the rumen fluid was not influenced by the diets but was slightly higher from TMR than from control. No difference was found in ammonia-N concentration between diets. Total VFA concentration was relatively increased in the cattle fed RS-TMR to the other diets up to 6h post feeding. The proportion of acetate was increased in the TMR feeding at right before feeding (0 h, p<0.005) and 9 h (p<0.048) post feeding compared with control. Propionate proportion was increased (p<0.046) in both TMRs while butyrate proportion was increased (p<0.029) at 1h post feeding compared to other diets. Effective degradability (ED) of DM and CP of RS-TMR was relatively increased to other diets, and EDNDF of both TMRs was higher than that of control diet due to the increased parameters b (p<0.039) and c (p<0.006) in TMR treatments. Whole track digestibility of most components in the TMRs was slightly increased compared to that in control diet, and RS-TMR had a tendency to be increased whole track digestibility except for NDF compared to BS-TMR. Based on the results observed from the present study, nutrient availability of whole crop silage based TMR looked slightly better than conventional separate feeding of concentrate and rice straw, mainly due to the improved stabilization of fermentation in the rumen and increased NDF digestibility of whole crop silage in TMR.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the biological activities and nutritional contents of extracts from three types of edible mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus, P. eryngii, and Hericium erinaceus) following different roasting treatments. Roasting by a household multi-oven (HR60) decreased the total polyphenol contents, as well as DPPH radical scavenging and nitrite scavenging activities compared with the fresh samples, and no significant difference was observed between the different roasting times. As a result of rotary drum roasting (CR) treatment, we could observe a decrease in the DPPH radical scavenging activity in all roasted mushroom samples compared with the fresh samples, whereas nitrite scavenging activity increased in roasted P. eryngii and H. erinaceus. Additionally, total polyphenol contents increased significantly in roasted H. erinaceus. In each roasted sample dried by HR60 and CR, the amount of palatable-taste amino acids (e.g., glutamic acid) and sweet-taste amino acids, including glycine, serine, alanine, and threonine, increased in P. ostreatus, whereas the amount of bitter amino acids, including leucine, isoleucine, histidine, valine, and methionine, decreased compared with the fresh samples. In P. eryngii and H. erinaceus samples, we also observed an increase in the amount of palatable and sweet-taste amino acids upon the roasting treatments; however, the amount of bitter amino acids increased simultaneously following the roasting treatments. These results suggest that CR treatment is more effective in increasing the biological activities and nutritional contents, such as palatable and sweet-taste amino acids, compared with HR60 treatment.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding a mixture of broiler litter and bakery by-product on production, economy and meat characteristics of growing ‘Hanwoo’ steers. A control diet (conventional formulated feed and rice straw) and a treatment diet(90% mixture of broiler litter 64% and bakery by-product 36% and 10% rice straw on DM basis) were prepared on an isoenergetic basis and fed to 20 steers for 12 weeks. Palatability of TMR by ‘Hanwoo’ was fair. Compared with feeding a control diet, feeding a treatment diet resulted in increased(P〈0.05) DM intake, similar OM intake, similar daily weight gain(0.75 vs 0.64 kg/d) and feed efficiency of DM(10.1 vs 12.5) and OM(9.0 vs 10.6), considerably(45%) reduced(P〈0.05) feed cost/gain, and similar meat characteristics. These results show that a mixed ration manufactured with broiler litter and bakery by-product may be potentially used for growing ‘Hanwoo’ steers.

  • This study were conducted to investigate the effects of several additives in experimental diets on the growth, feed utilization and body composition of juvenile and grower rockfish. Three replicates of juveniles (3.6 g/fish) and two replicates growers (166 g/fish) were fed the experimental diets containing herb medicines mixture, Artemisia asiatica and Epimedium koreanum for 8 weeks. Dietary supplementation with herb medicines mixture had no beneficial effects on growth and feed utilization of juvenile fish. Weight gain, daily feed intake, condition factor and hepatosomatic index of grower fish fed the diet were not affected by dietary additive (P>0.05). Peed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of grower fish fed the diet containing herb medicines mixture were significantly higher than those of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05), but not significantly different from fish fed the diet containing A. asiatica and E. koreanum (P>0.05). Proximate analysis of whole body, muscle, viscera and liver in the juvenile and grower were not affected by dietary additives (P>0.05). The results of this study suggest that feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of grower rockfish may improved by herb medicines mixture supplementation in the diet.

  • Cross-synergistic interactions were evaluated with purified enzymes from Trichoderma viride and Penicillium funiculosum cellulase. Different synergistic patterns between enzyme components were observed. Exo-exo type synergism was found to be the most effective for degrading Avicel in all cases. Exo-endo type synergism was found to be slightly less effective. Extended hydrolysis of Avicel was carried out using mixtures of purified enzyme components with the crude cellulase from a different source. Addition of $\beta$-glucosidase from P. funiculosum cellulase to T. viride cellulase provided the great enhancement of Avicel hydrolysis. In addition, exoglucanase from T. viride cellulase was found to enhance P. funiculosum cellulase in degradation of Avicel. In conclusion, it was possible to enhance the hydrolysis of Avicel by altering the proportions of enzyme components by supplementing enzyme components from a different source. Different types of synergisms acted together to achieve maximum conversion.

  • This paper analyzed elution and ingredients of soil components which consist of soil and rocks in 6 regions in Yeongyang and Cheongsong to identify substantial matters that cause muddy water in Imha reservoir. We identified that more than 80% of major ingredients in collected soil and rocks are vermiculite(V), illite(I), kaolinite(Ka), quartz(Q), feldspar(F). Sodium and calcium are eluted in large quantities from soil of Sanseong and Cheongki. When calcium is in contact with water, much ions are eluted rapidly. We confirmed these ions are alkali minerals rising pH. We consider clay components distributed in Yeongyang as major cause of muddy water and rising pH of Imha reservoir because its ingredient calcite easily is dissolved in rainwater and splits other mineral particles into ${\mu}m$ sized particles.

  • We carried out separation and guantitation of flavor components by GC about essential oils extracted from deodorized corn oil at the different deodorizing temperature. Flavor components were detected total 16 kinds included aldehydes of 8 kinds, major components were propane, pentane, hexanal etc. These major components content was about 70~75% of the total flavor components. According to rise of deodorizing temperature, both ethane and aldehydes of 8 kinds content were in proportion to increase, but propane, pentane, hexane, octan, pentyl furan content were decreased by contraries, respectively. On the other hand, total flavor component content was appeared the lowest level at 245$^{\circ}C$ treating group, aldehydes content was in proportion to increase according to rise of deodorizing temperature. These phenomenons consider that the undesirable reactions such as partial auto-oxidation, degradation, polymerization and hydrolysis etc. by effecting factors of stripping steam and vacuum degree. Conclusively, deodorizing temperature under high temperature was undesirable for the minimization of off-flavor materials.
