  • This article examines the reason why Indonesian Javanese are using their traditional medicine jamu. Tracing the cultural logic of Javanese, this study observes the space and the process in which the demand on jamu is culturally constructed. In order to address this, the article focuses on Javanese family and their royal court, the spaces where jamu originated from and has been used. Then, the discussion proceeds to identify jamu as a medium to construct rukun(harmony) and tentram(peace), as well as to express and ensure Javanese cosmology. Along with the research, the article argues that: 1) jamu is an embodiment of Javanese local knowledge system into which Javanese consciousness, notions, knowledge, and techniques integrate; 2) the health achieved by using jamu is what Javanese call tentram, which encompasses physical, mental, spiritual and social dimensions of health; 3) the health of tentram has the value of a resource that becomes the foundation to build a good, prosperous society.

In this study, 10 middle-aged people in one-person households were interviewed. The interview data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis. Their motives for self-care were 'being aware of their physical aging and possibility of illnesse', 'feeling threatened about their safety', 'sensing that their daily livings may be at a risk', 'absence of a caregiven person who can take care of them', 'maintaining of their psychological health', 'being burned out from busy working schedules', and 'to lessen their own and their family's worries and anxiety.' • Although not many older Korean parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities have been reported depression due to care-giving related stresses, little is known about how they could be protected from this. This study examines whether satisfaction with family relationships moderate the relationships between time demands, caregiving stress, and depression of older parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities. The analyses were conducted based on data from the Korean National Survey on Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their Families of 2011, and only a total of 276 parents, aged over 60 were examined. Multiple regression analysis shows that older parents with higher level of satisfaction with family relationships were less likely to be influenced by time demands of care-giving. This indicates that satisfaction with family relationships could buffer the relationships between time demands of care-giving, and depression. This finding suggests that satisfaction with family relationships is a protective factor, buffering the negative effects of time demands of care-giving and depression. This supports 'socio-emotional selectivity theory' which family relationships are important to older people. Therefore, it is highly recommended to develop practical intervention that can improve the level of satisfaction of family relationship of the older parents, and to make policy and institutional supplementation.

  • Based on social capital theory, this study intends to understand accessed and mobilized social capital of married women with young children and the difference between two types of social capital in terms of their employment status. Factors related to accessed and mobilized social capital are also investigated. The subjects are 571 married women (284 employed and 287 unemployed) who have children younger than 5 years old. Their networks are revealed to show different composition and resource distribution according to the respective employment status. No significant difference is found in accessing social capital depending on the employment status. However, working women are capable of mobilizing more social capital for economic resources and child-care assistance than non-working women. The employment status is significant only in mobilizing social capital related to child-caring assistance. The effects of variables related to social networks of married women differ according to the types of resources sought for. The choices of married women on the employment status and child-rearing are observed in the findings of the ability to mobilize social capital for child-care assistance. The importance of kin ties and various social services for building social capital are discussed.
