A Study on Situational Crisis Communication Strategy according to Type of Crisis in Korea (위기 유형별 위기 대응 커뮤니케이션 전략 실태 연구 : 기업 사과문 분석을 중심으로)

  • Situational Crisis communication theory (SCCT), one of the major crisis communication theories, suggests that crisis managers have to choose the most effective crisis response strategy in accordance to the crisis type. However, there's a controversy over whether this theory is practically applicable in Korea. Therefore, this study analyzed statements of apology to see if companies in Korea are actually taking different response strategy according to the types of crisis. According to the result of analysis on 244 apology statements published in the newspapers from 2012 to spring of 2015, adaptive response strategy was mostly taken no matter what the crisis type was. In conclusion, there's a discrepancy in crisis response strategy between the theory suggested in SCCT and the current practices in Korea. This conclusion can contribute to devising an appropriate application of SCCT in Korea and to develop a more Korea relevant theory.

The Koreans Apology Map: An Analysis of Apologies by Types during the Past 10 Years (한국인의 사과 지형: 지난 10년간 사과문의 조직 및 유형 별 분석)

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the apologies made in Korea for the past 10 years, and to diagnose how Koreans used crisis communication strategies. For the analysis, typology of crisis communication strategy was adopted from previous study as well as the new typology distinctively found in Korea. Also preferred crisis communication strategies were analyzed by crisis subject, by crisis type and by stage of crisis. Results showed that among the crisis communication strategies, apology and corrective action were the most used strategies, followed by bolstering and appealing to sympathy. Preferred crisis communication also differed by crisis subject, by crisis type and by stage of crisis. When the crisis subject were government or public institutions, when the locus of crisis responsibility was internal, and when the crisis was a controllable human/social crisis, the justification strategy was preferred. The results seemed to be related to the unique cultural characteristics of Koreans, especially to sense of Cheong and Chemyon. Indirect corrective action and transcendence were Chemyon-saving strategies while bolstering and appealing to sympathy were strategies appealing to Cheong. Future study should address the new typology of crisis communication strategy reflecting the cultural characteristic.

  • How an organization communicates to relevant stake-holders in a crisis is critical to gain continued social acceptance and legitimacy. In this paper, we examine the evolution of crisis communication strategies by the Arts Council Korea(ARKO) in response to the Blacklist case that unfolded from 2017 through 2019. In doing so, we focused on the 'Pop-up Theater case', where ARKO officials had exercised their discretion to have the play produced by theater artists be discontinued because they had viewed that the play was engendering the imagery of the Sewol-Ho tragedy. Using a case study methodology, we follow a series of events that occurred during this crisis management process, analyzing three apologies issued by the ARKO. In doing so, we draw on Hearit (2006)'s crisis management theory to evaluate how ARKO's crisis communication was managed. Overall, our study highlights that without incorporating truthfulness and sincerity congruent with stakeholder expectations, an organization's crisis communication is likely to be less successful.

Analyzing user reactions to how game companies respond to issues: Focusing on Topic Modeling Analysis (게임사들의 이슈 대응 방식에 대한 사용자들의 반응 분석: 토픽모델링 분석을 중심으로)

  • 본 연구는 2021 게임업계 연쇄 파동을 통해 게임사 이슈 대응에 대한 사용자들의 인식이 바뀐 것에 주목하여 메이플스토리 확률 조작 사건에서 나타난 사용자들의 반응을 토픽모델링으로 분석하였다. 이를 위해 사건의 발단이 된 메이플스토리 테스트 월드 업데이트 내용이 업로드된 2021년 2월 18일 17시를 기점으로 국내 온라인 게임 커뮤니티 중 하나인 인벤의 자유게시판에서 총 10만 개의 게시물을 수집하고 토픽모델링 분석을 실시하였다. 이후 도출된 주제별 주요 단어를 10개씩 확인하여 주제를 정의했다. 각 토픽을 비교하며 관련성을 확인했고 이를 통해 사용자들의 반응을 분석한 결과 확률 조작으로 인한 보상으로 환불을 원하고 있다는 것과 아이템의 확률을 조작했다는 것에 대한 사용자들의 분노, 디렉터 본인의 직접적인 사과문과 사용자와의 소통 요구, 또 다른 게임으로의 이탈을 확인할 수 있었다.

Optimization of Extraction Conditions of Polyphenolic Compounds from Apple Pomace by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석에 의한 사과 pomace로부터의 폴리페놀 추출조건 최적화)

  • This study examined the optimization of alcohol extraction conditions for maximizing the total polyphenols derived from apple pomace, by response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of four independent variables, including $X_1$ (ratio of solvent to sample content), $X_2$ (dipping time), $X_3$ (extraction time), and $X_4$(extraction temperature), were investigated at five levels using central composite design (CCD). $Y_1$ (yield) and $Y_2$ (total polyphenols) were chosen as dependent variables. The coefficients of determination, $R^2$, were greater than 0.900 (0.9042 and 0.9555). The results showed that the model fit was very significant (p<0.001). The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: 13.00 mL/g for the ratio of solvent to sample content, 89.02 min for dipping time, 180 min for extraction time, and $70^{\circ}C$ for extraction temperature. At these conditions, the predicted total polyphenol content was 29.68 mg catechin equiv./g.

Determination of Patulin in Commercial Apple Juice in Korea by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (High Performance Liquid Chromatography를 이용한 국내 시판 사과 주스의 Patulin 분석)

  • Seven brands of commercial apple juice in Korea obtained from local stores were analyzed for patulin. Sep-Pak silica cartridge purification of the extract by ethyl acetate offered a good separation of patulin from other components. Patulin was determined by reverse phase liquid chromatography using a J'sphere $4\;{\mu}m$ ODS-H80 column with an ultraviolet detector set at 274 nm. Patulin concentrations in four samples ranged from 4 to $20\;{\mu}g/L$ and the other three samples from 30 to $45\;{\mu}g/L$. The limit of detection was $3\;{\mu}g/L$, and the recovery was $80{\sim}90%$ at the contamination level of $3.78{\sim}125.9\;{\mu}g/L$.

Comparison of Fruit Characteristics of 'Fuji'/M.26 in Response to Ethephon Treatment and Combined Treatment of Ethephon and CaCl2 During Maturing Stages (Ethephon 단용처리와 Ethephon 및 염화칼슘 혼합처리에 따른 사과 'Fuji'/M.26의 성숙기 과실특성 비교)

  • The harvest time of the late-ripening 'Fuji' apple (Malus × domestica) is variable, depending on the coloration of the fruit skin. Ethephon, a plant growth regulator, promotes the ethylene production and induces physiological responses associated with fruit maturation in climacteric fruit crops, such as apples. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ethephon treatment on fruit characteristics after fruit enlargement, with the objective of proposing an economical and stable harvest control method for 'Fuji'/M.26 apples. Fruit characteristics were assessed at 10-days intervals following the application of 100 mg/L ethephon and mixture of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at 145 days after full bloom (DAFB). Starch contents of ethephon-treated (ET) and ethephon with CaCl2-treated (EC) apples began to decrease from 155 DAFB, and the starch contents of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest were similar to those of control at harvest time. Red coloration of fruit skin in EC was lower compared to ET but higher than control. The average fruit firmness was low in ET, while the control and EC exhibited similar levels of firmness. Fruit sugar acid ratios did not show significant differences between treatments. However, the titratable acidity of EC was significantly lower than that of the control at 10 days before harvest. Moreover, fruit sugar acid ratio of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest in 2021 was similar to their sugar acid ratio at harvest time. Therefore, it was thought that fruit maturation and skin coloration could be accelerated by 10 days from the harvest time through the combined treatment of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at the end of fruit enlargement in 'Fuji'/M.26.
