Relationship between V/C and Accident Rate for Freeway Facility Sections (focused on Shingal-Ansan Freeway) (고속도로 시설물 구간의 교통혼잡도와 사고율의 관계 분석 (신갈-안산 고속도로를 중심으로))

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the relationship between accident rate and V/C for freeway facility. The relationship can be used as a basic reference to predict and prevent traffic accident. The traffic volume and the number of accidents from 1992 to 1997 on Shingal-Ansan Freeway were analyzed in this study to clarify the relationship. Hourly accident rate and V/C were calculated for each facility sections : basic freeway section, tunnel section and toll gate section. The accident rate models consisting of an independent variable of V/C were established by repression analysis and compared with each other. The relationship between accident rates and V/C ratios represented U-shaped pattern for all sections. The result of this study indicates that accident rates are highest in the low hourly V/C range, decrease with increasing V/C ratio, and then increase as the V/C ratio increases. The accident rate of toll gate section is in general higher than that of other sections. Although the accident rate of tunnel section is higher than that of basic freeway section when V/C is above 0.67, there is no significant difference of accident rate between basic freeway and tunnel section when V/C is between 0.5 and 0.8. Basic freeway tunnel and toll gate section have the minimum accident rate when V/C is 0.78, 0.75 and 0.57 respectively.

Evaluating Traffic Safety Benefits of Electronic Stability Control System Using a Meta Analysis: Focused on Accident Rates (메타분석을 이용한 차체자세제어장치(ESC)의 교통안전성 효과분석: 사고율 분석을 중심으로)

  • The objective of this study is to identify the effectiveness of ESC(Electronic Stability Control) based on a meta analysis technique. Accident Rate, Fatal Crash Rate, Loss of Control Crash Rate were set as indexes of traffic safety evaluation. Also, reviews on the effectiveness of ESC were collected using keyword, 'ESC'. As a result, the Effect size of accident rate odd ratio was 0.90. When ESC system was applied on vehicles, accident rate decreased by 10%. Also, the Effect size of fatal crash rate odd ratio was 0.64. When ESC system was applied on vehicles, fatal crash rate decreased by 36%. Lastly, the Effect size of loss of control crash rate odd ratio was 0.73. When ESC system was applied on vehicles, loss of control crash rate decreased by 27%. The outcome of this study would be effectively used for developing polices and regulations for ESC installation obligation of commercial vehicles.

Accident Rate Forecasting Model by Using Speed on Freeway (속도를 이용한 고속도로 구간 사고율 예측 모형)

  • The speed is one of the significant factors affecting accident occurrence. In particular, freeway accidents are highly associated with the speed because vehicles travel on the freeway at higher speed leading to greater potential of severer injury. Efforts attempting to relating speed with accident occurrence have not been significantly made in Korea. The objective of this study is to model the relationship between speed and accident rate on freeways. Loop detector data and accident data obtained from a stretch of Kyungboo freeway during the recent five years, 2005-2009, were used to establish the model. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that median, minimum and standard deviation of speed were contributing variables in the model. The statistical significance identified by the analyses supports the feasibility of the model in evaluating various transportation policies and operations strategies in terms of traffic safety.

International Comparative Analysis of Traffic Safety Indicators related to Road Traffic Accidents (도로교통사고 안전지표의 국제간 비교분석 평가)

  • This study was to evaluate the level of traffic safety related to domestic traffic accidents by analyzing the international comparison of road traffic accident indicators and to set goals and directions of traffic accidents in Korea in the future. The research procedure was as follows: First, population, number of registered vehicles, roadway length, vehicle kilometers, injury accidents, fatalities, injuries were collected in 32 OECD countries. Second, we determined Korea's traffic safety rankings through international comparison of traffic accident rate. Finally, we analyzed the level of traffic safety by comparing Korea with the 7 advanced countries with the traffic accident rate per vehicle kilometers. The accident rate in Korea was greater than two times higher than those of the seven major developed countries, which showed that the level of traffic safety in Korea implied very low. Target values for domestic accidents were proposed based on the accident rate.

  • 우리는 날마다 자동차 사고 소식을 듣고 있다. 그에 비하면 선박(화물선)이나 여객선의 해상 사고소식도 간간이 보도되지만 항공기 그 중에도 여객기 사고 소식은 별로 잦지 않다. 승객수에 의한 사고 빈도나 승객거리당 사고율, 그리고 취항수송수와 사고횟수의 비율, 주행 또는 항행거리당 사고율을 수송수단별로 비교해 보면 여객기 사고가 가장 적다.

  • Preventing the traffic accident by accurately predicting it in advance can greatly improve road traffic safety. The accurate traffic accident prediction model requires not only understanding of the factors that cause the accident but also having the transferability of the model. So, this paper suggest the traffic accident diagram using CART(Classification And Regression Tree) analysis, developed Model is compared with the existing accident prediction models in order to test the goodness of fit. The results of this study are summarized below. First, traffic accident prediction model using CART analysis is developed. Second, distance(D), pedestrian shoulder(m) and traffic volume among the geometrical factors are the most influential to the traffic accident. Third. CART analysis model show high predictability in comparative analysis between models. This study suggest the basic ideas to evaluate the investment priority for the road design and improvement projects of the traffic accident blackspots.

Design Guideline for Spacing between Tunnel and Interchange (터널과 인터체인지 이격거리 설계기준에 관한 연구)

  • Where an interchange is located just after a tunnel not only it is impossible to install the traffic signs in tunnel sections but also sufficient sight distance to identify the interchange can't be provided. The objective of this study is to suggest the safety based spacing between tunnel and interchange. For this study accident rate was used as an index representing characteristics for vehicle operation to suggest the appropriate spacing. Traffic volume and the number of accidents on freeway from 1992 to 1997 were analyzed. The relationship between accident rate and spacing represents negative logarithm function such that shorter spacing increases accident rate. An appropriate safety based spacing between tunnel and interchange for four lane freeway with the design speed of 100kph was found as 2.6km.

  • 도시부 교차로의 설계는 지방부 교차로와 근본적으로 달라야 하나, 현행 도시부 교차로 설계는 지방부 교차로 설계기준을 준용하고 있다. 본 연구는 도시부 및 지방부 교차로의 차이점을 비교 분석하고, 국내외 교차로 종단경사 설계기준을 검토한 후 적정 설계기준(안)을 적용한 후, 이를 통계적 분석기법을 활용하여 검증하여 설계기준을 정립하는 순으로 진행 하였다. 분석결과 정면충돌사고율과 차대차추돌사고율이 종단경사와 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구를 통해 적정 교차로 종단경사를 적용한 설계가 이루어져야 함을 확인 할 수 있었다.

A Study on the Characteristics of Traffic Accidents on Trumpet IC Ramp (트럼펫 IC형식 연결로 교통사고 특성분석에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a fundamental study on the characteristics of traffic accidents according to the alignment and traffic conditions on the ramp of freeway is addressed. The macro-and-micro scope analysis of characteristics about traffic accidents on the trumpet-IC ramps is conducted depending on the entering and exit ramp types under the various conditions of traffic volume and alignment And it is turned out that the conditions of alignment. such as radius, differences of curvatures, and main road grade, and traffic volume relate to the ramp accidents of trumpet IC according to ramp types, such as direction, semi-direction, and loop. Macroscopically, AR (Accident Rate) according to trumpet IC types, A and B, is analyzed nearly equal, but Number of accidents occurred in IC type B shows about 1.5 times higher than type A. And AR of exit ramps shows three times more than entrance ramps. Microscopically, ARs for each exit-ramp type, according to the increment of traffic volume, the difference of curvatures. and the first radius, exponentially decrease respectively. But relationships between AR and the second radius or exit ramp shows inverted U-shaped. AR according to main-road grade Peaks between -1.5% and -0.5%. It is expected that the developed models not only are employed to make design of trumpet-IC ramp more cost-efficiently and safely, but also contribute to making alternatives to the reduction of traffic accidents on trumpet IC ramps under the conditions of high traffic accident rate.
