  • SSD (solid state disk), which is flash memory-based storage device, has the advantages of high density and fast data processing. Therefore, it is being utilized as a storage device for high-capacity data storage systems that manage rapidly increasing big data. However, flash memory, a storage media, has a physical limitation that when the write/erase operation is repeated more than a certain number of times, the cells are worn out and can no longer be used. In this paper, we propose a method for converting defective multi-bit cells into single-bit cells to reduce the defect rate of flash memory and extend its lifetime. The proposed idea distinguishes the defects and treatment methods of multi-bit cells and single-bit cells, which have different physical characteristics but are treated as the same defect, and converts the expected defective multi-bit cells into single-bit cells to improve the defect rate and extend the overall lifetime. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed idea by measuring the increased lifetime of SSD through simulations.

  • Various parallel processing R packages are used for fast processing and the analysis of big data. Parallel processing is used when the work can be decomposed into tasks that are non-interdependent. In some cases, each task decomposed for parallel processing can also be decomposed into non-interdependent subtasks. We have to choose whether to parallelize the decomposed tasks in the first step or to parallelize the subtasks in the second step when facing nested parallelism situations. This choice has a significant impact on the speed of computation; consequently, it is important to understand the nature of the work and decide where to do the parallel processing. In this paper, we provide an idea of how to apply parallel computing effectively to problems by illustrating how to select a parallelism point for the bandwidth selection of nonparametric regression.

  • A variety of sensors is widely used these days, and it has become much easier to acquire spatial big data streams from various sources. Since spatial data streams have inherently skewed and dynamically changing distributions, the system must effectively distribute the load among workers. Previous studies to solve this load imbalance problem are not directly applicable to processing spatial data. In this research, we propose Adaptive Spatial Key Grouping (ASKG). The main idea of ASKG is, by utilizing the previous distribution of the data streams, to adaptively suggest a new grouping scheme that evenly distributes the future load among workers. We evaluate the validity of the proposed algorithm in various environments, by conducting an experiment with real datasets while varying the number of workers, input rate, and processing overhead. Compared to two other alternative algorithms, ASKG improves the system performance in terms of load imbalance, throughput, and latency.

  • Korea's housing structure is predicted that one-person housing will be the most common type of housing in Korea. Therefore, this study intends to derive contents for designing a one-person housing space considering the life of a rapidly increasing one-person householder. For this purpose, this study objectively derives the social, economic and cultural influencing factors of one-person households through big data analysis, and analyzed the correlation between contents using social network analysis methodology. In this paper, 60 core contents related to one person housing space were derived by applying big data analysis methodology. And through social network analysis, the most influential contents were derived from the space editing and space composition categories. This means that the residential space is an important part of the design idea that can flexibly respond to changes in the user's life. Based on this study, future research will focus on the concept and design methodology of one-person housing space.

  • The content system table of the subject-matter curriculum is considered important in the Korean national curriculum, textbook writing, and teaching and learning in the classroom. However, studies that comprehensively organize the issues concerning the format of the subject-matter curriculum content system have been scarce. This study scrutinized the evolution of the content system from its inception in The 6th Curriculum to the most recent 2022 Revised National Curriculum, focusing on science curricular. The following issues and suggestions were derived for the format of the subject content system. First, caution should be exercised in using terms such as "domain," "field," and "category," and it should be clarified whether these terms are intended simply for logical differentiation or to serve as a content organizer with a specific emphasis. Second, the nature of components such as "core ideas," which can serve as innovative content organizers, should be strictly defined. Third, while the introduction of three-dimensional content elements such as "knowledge and understanding," "process and skill," and "value and attitude" is viewed positively, it is suggested that a further delineation be made, elaborating how each can be utilized to form core competencies. Fourth, the construction of the subject-specific content system in national curriculum needs caution because whether it will resolve or exacerbate the 'disparity between general curriculum and subject-matter curriculums' is uncertain. Finally, as an apparent pendulum motion of the subject-matter content system is observed in national curriculum documents, efforts should be made to ensure that it does not result in meaningless repetition, but instead achieves meaningful dialectical progress.

  • Through advances driven by the Internet and the Smart Revolution, the amount and types of data generated by users have increased and diversified respectively. There is now a new concept at the center of attention, which is Big Data for assessing enormous amount of data and enjoying new values therefrom. In particular, efforts are required to analyze narratives within video clips and to study how to visualize such narratives in order to search contents stored in the Big Data. As part of the research efforts, this paper analyzes dialogues exchanged among characters and offers an interface named "Character-net" developed for modelling narratives. The interface Character-net can extract characters by analyzing narrative videos and also model the relationships between characters, both in the automatic manner. This signifies a possibility of a tool that can visualize a narrative based on an approach different from those used in existing studies. However, its drawbacks have been observed in terms of limited applications and difficulty in grasping a narrative's features at a glace. It was assumed that Character-net could be improved with the introduction of information design. Against the backdrop, the paper first provides a brief explanation of visualization design found in the data information design area and investigates research cases focused on the visualization of narratives present in videos. Next, key ideas of Character-net and its technical differences from existing studies have been introduced, followed by methods suggested for its potential improvements with the help of design-side solutions.

  • Web crawler should maintain fresh data with minimum server overhead for large amount of data in the web sites. The overhead in the server increases rapidly as the amount of data is exploding as in the big data era. The amount of web information is increasing rapidly with advanced wireless networks and emergence of diverse smart devices. Furthermore, the information is continuously being produced and updated in anywhere and anytime by means of easy web platforms, and smart devices. Now, it is becoming a hot issue how frequently updated web data has to be refreshed in data collection and integration. In this paper, we propose dynamic web-data crawling methods, which include sensitive checking of web site changes, and dynamic retrieving of web pages from target web sites based on historical update patterns. Furthermore, we implemented a Java-based web crawling application and compared efficiency between conventional static approaches and our dynamic one. Our experiment results showed 46.2% overhead benefits with more fresh data compared to the static crawling methods.

  • As the viewpoint of data evolves from business resources to value resources, the focus on the data processing is rapidly shifting from the cartesian (alphanumeric) to the contextual. In response to this trend, the government is actively promoting the utilization of public data by the private sectors. With a focus on the fact that the mainstream of public data users is the crowds, this study, therefore, seeks to identify differences between the members and the crowds from information processing view, followed by presenting directions and main points for the design of data platform. This study is perhaps to be a starting point for finding practical alternatives for creating 'collective intelligence ecosystem' and to be a basis for building a big data base in response to the opening of public data.

  • In big-data environments wherein large amounts of text documents are produced daily, titles are very important clues that enable a prompt catching of the key ideas in documents; however, titles are absent for numerous document types such as blog articles and social-media messages. In this paper, a title-generation model for which sequence-to-sequence RNNs with attention and copying mechanisms are employed is proposed. For the proposed model, input sentences are encoded based on bi-directional GRU (gated recurrent unit) networks, and the title words are generated through a decoding of the encoded sentences with keywords that are automatically selected from the input sentences. Regarding the experiments with 93631 training-data documents and 500 test-data documents, the attention-mechanism performances are more effective (ROUGE-1: 0.1935, ROUGE-2: 0.0364, ROUGE-L: 0.1555) than those of the copying mechanism; in addition, the qualitative-evaluation radiative performance of the former is higher.
