  • This paper concerns the dynamic property of TVC system in the upper stage of KSLV-I. The minimum bandwidth of TVC system is predicted by gathering and comparing the dynamic test data through whole development phases of KSLV-I. The linear models which approximate the dynamic data are also suggested. It is shown that the minimum bandwidth of KSLV-I TVC system is guaranteed over 6.0 Hz at one degree command. It is also shown that the linear model of KSLV-I TVC dynamics takes the form of the transfer function with an 8-th order denominator and a 2-nd order numerator. These results will play an important role in analyzing the flight stability and performance of KSLV-I.

  • In general, the fidelity of the aircraft dynamic model is verified by comparison with the flight test results of the target aircraft. Therefore, the reference flight data for performance comparisons must be extracted. This process requires a lot of time and manpower to extract useful data from the vast quantity of flight test data containing various noise for comparing fidelity. In particular, processing of flight data is complex because rotorcraft have high non-linearity characteristics such as coupling and wake interference effect and perform various maneuvers such as hover and backward flight. This study defines flight data processing criteria for rotorcraft and provides procedures and methods for automated processing of static and dynamic flight data using data mining techniques. Finally, the methods presented are validated using flight data.

  • an approach to air-vehicle design, an application of the radio-controlled model flight test techniques has been presented. The approach presented in this study is to validate the air-vehicle design configuration by analyzing the flight test results of scale model with dynamic similarities, and then to apply the analyzed results to the aerodynamic design process in early stage of the air-vehicle development. To develop practically applicable similarity laws for the subscale flying model design, the air-vehicle motions are decoupled into rotational motions for stability & control similarities and translational motions for flight performance similarities. Also, detail techniques for radio-controlled model flight test have been developed. Based on the results obtained from the radio-controlled flight test, the present approach for air-vehicle design has shown to be useful to validate the air-vehicle design configuration.

  • Increasing cruise speed is an important issue for the development of the next generation rotorcraft. Among several concepts proposed by previous research, the rotorcraft with ducted fan demonstrates its possibility of high-speed flight. In this study, numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the aerodynamic and flow characteristics of multi-ducted fan in forward flight. The aerodynamic efficiency around front ducted fan is determined by interaction between free-stream velocity and the induced velocity. While flow characteristics of rear ducted fan are dominantly influenced by the front ducted fan. Separation in the front ducted fan occurs faster than that of rear ducted fan, and the separation at duct inlet induces an increase of fan thrust. As a result of interaction effect between each ducted fan, relatively aligned inflow enters to the rear ducted fan. Therefore, thrust of the rear fan is decreased steadily before separation, and sudden changes of thrust in fans occur simultaneously. Due to the pressure decrease on lower surface, the normal force of rotorcraft is reduced with forward speed.

  • In this study, an efficient ornithopter aerodynamic model, which is applicable to ornithopter wing design considering fluid-structure interaction or ornithopter flight dynamics and control simulation, was proposed and experimentally validated through the wind tunnel experiments. Due to the ornithopter aerodynamics governed by unsteady low Reynolds number flow, an experimental device was specially designed and developed. A part of the experimental device, 2-axis loadcell, was situated in the non-inertial frame; the dynamic calibration method was established to compensate the inertial load for pure aerodynamic load measurements. The characteristics of proposed aerodynamic model were compared with the experimental data in terms of mean and root-mean-square values of lift and drag coefficients with respect to the flow speed, flapping frequency, and fixed angle of attack.

  • A technique was developed for analysis on sonic boom created by supersonic flight and for prediction of its sound level and atmospheric propagation characteristics. It is of great importance to anticipate sound level of sonic boom because it causes environmental issue. For that purpose, the simplified sonic-boom prediction method was applied to calculate sound pressure according to physical properties and flight information of the object and distance to measurement site, in this study. Propagation characteristics of shock wave emanated from a flying object was analyzed by using line-of-sight vector and ray tracing method which dealt with refraction of wave due to atmospheric density distribution along altitude. Predicted results agreed well with measured data from real flight.

  • Hypersonic aircraft technologies have been developed with increase in flight speeds. As hypersonic flight speeds increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France, and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical phase of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

  • By using an actuator disk method based flow solver, aerodynamic analysis is carried out for a dual ducted fan aircraft, which is one of the VTOL compound aircrafts, and its associated ground effect is analyzed. The characteristics and accuracy of the solver for ground effect analysis is evaluated through a comparison with the results obtained from the sliding mesh technique. The aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics with respect to the distance from the ground are analyzed. As the ground distance decreases, the fan thrust increases, but the deterioration of total normal force and hovering flight efficiency is identified owing to the decrease in the vertical force of the duct, fuselage, and wing. By examining the flow field in the bottom of the fuselage, the ground vortices and fountain flow generated by the interaction of the fan wake and ground are identified, and their influence on the aerodynamic performance is analyzed. The strength and characteristics of outwash with respect to the ground distance and azimuth direction are analyzed through comparison/examination of velocity profile. Influence of the ground effect with respect to collective pitch angle is also identified.

  • This study aims to examine the factors influencing successful flight training performance in helicopter pilot education. To this end, an exploratory factor analysis was used to extract individual cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics, and a hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to find out how these characteristics (factors) affect flight training performance. As a result, it was found that the higher the spatial perception ability, resilience, and mastery goal-oriented learning attitude, the higher the flight training performance had a positive effect. This reconfirms the importance of spatial awareness, which is particularly required for pilots, and reconfirms that the role of a flight instructor in a limited cockpit space and the right motivation and effort of an individual affect flight training performance. These results are expected to be useful indicators for effective flight training of helicopter pilots in the future.

  • Flight simulation model for helicopter simulator is one of the most important models which affect flight performance and handling quality. It is typical to develop the model based on the raw data and models from the helicopter designers/manufacturers. The approaches in this study were to develop the basic model based on the available resources regarding helicopter operation/maintenance and to tune and validate it based on the flight test results. The basic model was developed with maintenance manuals, flight manuals, analyses, measurements, papers and so on considering that KA-32T data could not be obtained from the manufacturer. The flight test for KA-32T was performed and the reference data for the simulation validation tests were acquired. The flight simulation model was validated to have the fidelity compatible with level C of FAA AC120-63 after comparison and tuning with flight test results.
