Accident Analysis & Lessons Learned of B737MAX JT610 from a Flight Control System Design Perspective (비행제어시스템 설계 관점의 B737MAX JT610편 사고분석과 교훈)

  • The Lion Air JT610 accident in Indonesia in October 2018, along with the Ethiopian Airline ET302 accident in March 2019, is an significant aircraft accident that detects defects of the B737MAX aircraft. Shortly after the accident, the FAA prohibited operation of the aircraft. This action has affected the market environment of airlines and aircraft manufacturers around the world. In October 2019, Indonesian Traffic Safety Committee released an accident investigation report for Lion Air JT610, which concluded that the causes of the accident were MCAS design defects, lack of education and training, and errors in the repair process. This paper summarizes the flight control system of the B737MAX aircraft, the causes of the accident based on the final accident investigation report, and provides considerations for aircraft design and retrofit.

  • 유동 교란에 의하여 균일유동이 아닌 자유류가 항공기 날개 표면을 지나면 공력 계수들이 균일 자유류 유동과는 달라진다. 예를 들어, 항공기들의 편대 비행에서 앞의 항공기가 생성한 후류가 뒷 항공기에 영향을 주고, 두 개의 주익을 가지는 Tandem Wing 항공기의 경우 첫 번째 주익에서 발생된 후류가 두 번째 주익의 공력에 영향을 미친다. 본 연구는 NACA0012 익형의 앞쪽에 또 다른 익형을 배치하여 앞 쪽의 익형에서 발생한 후류가 뒤의 익형에 미치는 영향을 익형 사이의 거리에 따라 분석하였다. 앞쪽의 익형에서 발생한 압력계수와 뒤쪽에서 발생한 압력계수의 비교를 통해 후류의 효과가 어떤 영향을 끼치는지 확인 하였고, 두 익형 사이의 거리가 2c일 때 후류의 영향이 거의 없음을 확인 하였다.

지면효과를 고려한 비행체에 따른 공력 특성 분석

  • 본 연구에서는 지면효과의 영향을 비행체의 형상에 따라 비교하기 위해 에어포일, 플랩을 장착한 에어포일 그리고 플라잉디스크를 EDISON_CFD를 통해 해석하고자 한다. 받음각 $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$에 대하여 마하수 0.18, 단위 길이 당 레이놀즈수 $3.78{\times}10^{-5}/m$의 유동조건에서 2차원 범용 소프트웨어인 KFLOW_EDISION_13의 S-A Turbulent Model을 이용하여 지면과의 높이를 형상 코드길이를 기준으로 0.25c, 0.5c, 1c, 3c로 변경하면서 해석을 수행하였다. 그 결과 세 형상 모두 일반적인 지면효과인 지면과 가까울수록 양력계수는 증가, 항력계수는 감소하여 양항비가 증가하는 경향을 보여주었다. 하지만 일부 예외적인 부분을 확인하여 분석을 실시하였다.

  • With the financial sponsorship of FKI and six other companies, the design and construction of the human powered aircraft Sky Runner has been begun to design in December of 2008. And it flew in late December of 2009. The original design configuration was continuously modified in response to test results as a 30.36m span, $35.25m^2$ wing area, 26.0 aspect ratio and 39.8kg of empty weight. Although, we have made only 150m flight flying a few seconds so far however, it will contribute to the research of ultra-light and long duration flying planes. A brief review of some design features, wing layout, prop design, fabrication and flight test results are presented.

  • In this paper, the computation of electromagnetic wave scattering is presented for chaff clouds which is widely used to protect an aircraft. The RCS depends on the wind, the aircraft velocity, and the atmospheric diffusion. It is assumed that the RF chaff is a thin dipole antenna and the RCS is calculated based on the scattering wave theory. The theoretical estimation and the simulation results are compared and shown a good agreement.

  • The performance characteristics of a TBCC engine considering the transition mode from a turbojet to a ramjet engine has been investigated. The performance of each engine was proposed and a transition mode of the TBCC engine has been evaluated by adjusting the operating rate of the ramjet engine and turbojet engine performance changes continuously. Based on the transition model, it was confirmed that the performance is continuously changed at various flight Mach numbers and altitudes. The performance characteristics including thrust and specific impulse considering various flight conditions and transition mode were analyzed, which testifies characteristics of the engine itself, as well as transition of the combined cycle.

Tensile Characteristics of A12024-T3 under Rapid Heating (급속가열환경에서 A12024-T3의 인장특성)

  • The thermomechanical tensile characteristics were evaluated for A12024-T3 under heating rates from $1^{\circ}C/sec\;to\;30^{\circ}C/sec$ by using an infrared heating equipment to simulate aerodynamic heating. The rapid heating test results were compared with tensile test results after 1/2 hour exposure in terms of yield stress to investigate the influence of heating condition. A heating rate-yield temperature parameter was suggested for rapid heating based on time-temperature parameters, and master yield stress curve was obtained by using these parameter. These test results can be used for margin of safety of supersonic vehicle structures subjected to aerodynamic heating.

Study on the Flow Characteristics of Supersonic Air Intake at Mach 4 (마하4 초음속 공기 흡입구 유동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A Supersonic air intake model was designed for the high performance ramjet and dual-mode scramjet engine to operate at Mach 4 flight condition. The air intake was tested in the blowdown-type wind tunnel of Kyushu University to identify the internal flow characteristics corresponding to the flight parameters such as the back pressure, angle of attack and angle of yaw. Flow visualization was achieved by the Schlieren and oil flow visualization techniques. The intake performance was analyzed quantitatively based on the surface pressure and total Pressure measurements. The experimental results were compared with the computational fluid dynamics results. The present study exhibits the fundamental but rarely found experimental results of the high Mach number supersonic air intake.

Quality Evaluation of Aerospace Materials (항공우주용 재료의 품질평가)

  • In order to manufacture and produce the components to be used for developing aerospace products, it is essential to determine the conformity of material characteristics to the design requirements. However, since the Korean industry has no experience to develop aircraft and spacecraft, the national certification system has not been established. Hence, it is necessary to define the qualification methodology of material to establish the durability and the safety of aircraft and spacecraft. In this paper the characterization methodology which has been performed in aeronautically advanced countries for determination of conformity in materials and production process is reviewed. The change of material properties due to the space environment and the example of evaluation program of composites for the application of aircraft are presented. so that the foundation of evaluation system for aerospace materials can be initiated.

Dynamic modeling of supersonic engine for control law design considering the air disturbance (비행중 대기 외란을 고려한 초음속 엔진 제어용 모델링 기법 연구)

  • Dynamic model for supersonic engine is proposed to design control law. The model structure is constructed to capture the local characteristics of supersonic and subsonic flow by using conservation equations. To evaluate the stability of control law under the disturbances, the air turbulence model is incorporated with the engine model. The combined model shows analogous results compared to performance analysis model which is good coincidence with CFD results and disturbance effects.
