Instrument Flight Certification Process and Flight Test Results of Korean Utility Helicopter (한국형 기동헬기 계기비행 인증절차 및 비행시험 결과)

  • In this paper, the instrument flight certification process and flight test results of Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) are presented. For the instrument flight certification, the suitability of installed equipments and instruments have been reviewed and verified by ground and flight tests. Next, static and dynamic stability test are conducted in accordance with FAR-29 Appendix B. The static stability is determined by the change of speed and attitude according to control inputs. The dynamic stability is evaluated by how quickly the response of the helicopter due to long and short period control inputs are decreased. The pilot workload evaluation are also carried out by simulated IMC flight tests. This paper presents the workload assessment results when some failures are occurred at cockpit instruments, engine or flight control systems as well as the normal situation. After the simulated IMC flight test is completed, actual instrument flight test are conducted in a real IMC environment according to the air traffic controls.

A Comparison Study on the Semi-empirical Analysis Approach for the Flight Characteristics of a Light Airplane (경비행기의 비행특성 분석 및 준경험적 분석 방법 비교)

  • In this study, for development of the MDO (Multi Disciplinary Optimization) framework, the flight dynamic characteristic parameters of the ChangGong-91, a light aircraft, were extracted by an analytical method based on various semi-empirical methods, and the flight test method was compared and evaluated. The semi-empirical analysis methods for comparative subjects were the Perkins method, McCormick method, and Smetana method. The major stability/control derivatives and dynamic factors were calculated, using each method. As the comparison criteria, the flight test derivative estimates and dynamic factors were processed, using the output error method. Additionally, the flight characteristics of the light aircraft were analyzed and evaluated according to the provisions of the Korean Airworthiness Standard (KAS) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and MIL-F-8785C for the U.S. military.

  • An advanced method of Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) is utilized for improving the aerodynamic performance of modern version supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The flight control system utilizes RSS criteria in longitudinal axis to achieve performance enhancements and improve stability. The flight control law of T-50 advanced trainer employs RSS concept in order to improve the aerodynamic performance and guarantee aircraft stability. The longitudinal center of gravity(X-c.g) varies as a function of external stores, fuel state and gear position. Shifts in X-c.g relate directly to longitudinal static margin in aircraft stability. This paper deals the maximum aft X-c.g for critical aircraft loadings and checks static margin limits using sensitivity such as damping, natural frequency, gain and phase margin. And nonlinear analysis was conducted for such as short period input. And also, this paper shows the T-50 aircraft stability based on the result of high angle of attack flight such as upright and inverted departure.

  • It is necessary to develop digital flight control system by digital control technology to ensure stability and maneuverability of rotary helicopter. It is important to meet functional requirements of helicopter flight control system OFP and verify system reliability directly linked to flight safety as a core technology that avoids the transfer of technology by overseas advanced helicopter manufacturer. In this paper, we studied how to perform FMET for operational flight program of rotary automatic flight control system.

  • Software based fault tolerance techniques are designed to allow a system to tolerate software faults in the system. Fault tolerance techniques are divided into two groups : software based fault tolerance techniques and hardware based fault tolerance techniques. We need a proper design method according to characteristics of the system. In this paper, the concepts of software based fault tolerance techniques for Dual Flight Control Computer are described. For software based fault tolerance design, we classified software failure, designed a way for failure detection and the way of recovery. Eventually the effectiveness of software based fault tolerance techniques was verified through the Software Test Environment(STE).

  • For an access to specified helicopter simulator qualification's level C or FTD(Flight Training Device) level 5 of FAA(Federal Aviation Administration) AC(Advisory Circular) 120-63, the mathematical model of a single rotor helicopter flight dynamics is investigated. From the rotorcraft simulation model validated by evaluation of its flight performance, the feasibility of the flight dynamic model that is selected for its effectiveness has been proved. Thereby the simulation environment for evaluation of helicopter flying quality is established with the development of FTD for training and testing the flight performance.

  • Recently a system is being required to replace ILS due to increasing air traffic. In this paper, Curved approach is applied to an airport where ILS approach cannot be applied due to its geographical condition and restricted aerospace condition, and verified by flight test. After analysing conditions of Tae-an airfield of Hanseo University with virtual ILS approach, airfield applicability was evaluated by Curved approach using by GPS. Normally simulation is performed after establishing approach procedure using electric map, but recently verification is being performed by flight test without simulation because accuracy and reliability are increased. In this paper, established procedure is verified modified by flight test with Pilot Test and Auto Pilot test and controllability and passenger's stability were also checked.

  • 미래의 비행훈련은 기술수준이 보다 높아지면서 훈련의 효율은 높이면서 전투부대에서의 훈련을 감소시킴으로써, 경제성을 도모한다는 기본적인 목표를 잘 표시하고 있다. 미 공군의 EFS, PATS, BFTS/TTTS 역시 모두 훈련의 효율성과 경제성을 목표로 하고 있다. 특히 BFTS야말로 21세기중반까지 이 시대에 등장할 최신예전투기를 조종할 조종사를 훈련시켜야 될 SUPT의 최종단계 훈련이기 때문에 어떤 종류의 훈련을 시켜야 될 것인가를 판별하는 것이 가장 중요하다. 따라서 BFTS는 TTTS나 PATS에 비해서 선행기간과 개발기간이 길어질수밖에 없다

  • In recent years, as the commercialization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been actively promoted, much attention has been focused on developing a technology to ensure the safety of UAVs. In general, the UAV has the potential to enter an uncontrollable state caused by sudden maneuvers, disturbances, and pilot error. To prevent entering an uncontrolled situation, it is essential to predict the flight state of the UAV. In this paper, we propose a flight state prediction technique based on an improved CNN-LSTM hybrid mode to enhance the flight state prediction performance. Simulation results show that the proposed prediction technique offers better state prediction performance than the existing prediction technique, and can be operated in real-time in an on-board environment.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the flight test data measured by the sensors installed on a four-seat canard aircraft. The inherent stall proof characteristics of canard aircraft was verified from the stall test. The dihedral effect, adverse yaw and roll control power were examined and the neutral point that determines the longitudinal stability of the aircraft was investigated. The dynamic characteristics such as dutch roll mode were also examined. Without relying on the parameter identification method, the aerodynamic derivatives or the relations between the aerodynamic derivatives were obtained by analyzing the steady state flight data.
