  • Flight behavior of Mntsucoccus thunbergianae males and their response to the synthetic sex pheromone, (6R.lOR)-matsuone, were studied in Pinus thunbergiana forests More males were flying around the tree crown than near the ground. A dispenser loaded w~th 50 vg of the pheromone appeared to affect the density of male flights less than 10 meters Sticky traps with 50 pg of the pheromone attracted flylng males, but those with 1 pg were not effectwe in a forest wlth high crown closure, more males were tmpped at upper crown level than near the ground whereas males appeared to be more responsive to pheromone near the ground in a forest with low crown closure Monitoring new scale iniestations with pheromone mps was much more effective than egg sac surveys, the customary detecting procedures Maiing disruption was not achieved by placing 32 mg of pheromone m a space of l X l X l meter.

Degenerative Changes of Myocytes Induced by Restriction of Flight in Doves (비행운동 제한에 따른 비둘기 심근세포의 퇴행성 변화)

  • This present study was investigated to elucidate degenerative changes according to the change of habitual environment on the myocytes of doves by restricting them from flight that is instinct behavior of this animal and strong exercise. To restrict doves from flight, they were confined in the cage (1 $m^3$) for 2 months. After this period, the myocardium of the experimental group was compared to that of wild doves in the ultrastructural and cytochemical ways. In addition, stereological changes were also examined. The results were as followings: 1. The body weight of the confined experimental groups was higher than that of the wild doves, but the ratios of the pectoral muscle/body weight (p<0.05) and the heart/body weight were lower. 2. At the ultrastructural level, the myocardium of confined doves appeared as wavy fibers in the smaller area than in the myocardium of wild doves. Also, the length of sarcomeres was longer in the confined doves. The number of sarcoplasmic reticulum and capillary was smaller in the myocardium of confined doves. 3. Cytochemical examinations showed that the activities of cytochrome oxidase were lowered in the confined doves. 4. Stereological analysis revealed that the density of myofibrils was greater in the confined doves. In contrast the volume density of sarcoplasmic reticulum (p<0.05) and the surface density of mitochondrial inner membrane (p<0.05) was lower in the confined doves, while the numerical density of mitochondrial inner membrane was higher (p<0.05). These results suggest that even the short period of restricted exercise can induce negative effects on the functions of myocytes of doves that are adapted for the strong exercise such as flight. Therefore, the maintenance of prolonged exercise seems to be one of the important factors that are critical to retain the functions of myocardium.

Feeding Habits of the Kaloula borealis during the Breeding Season (번식기간중 맹꽁이(Kaloula borealis)의 먹이 습성)

  • To investigate the feeding habits of the Kaloula borealis, the stomach contents of 52 out of 56 specimens collected around Daejung-up, Jeju Island in June 2011 were studied. The stomach contents were analyzed with the stomach flushing method. According to the results, the main preys of the Kaloula borealis were Diptera sp., Harpalidae, Formicidae and Drosophilidae. the Kaloula borealis of all sizes fed on small preys, while individuals with large SVL fed on big preys. By feeding on a large amount of food with a small number of activities, the individuals with large SVL is considered to enhance energy efficiency. In many cases, the Kaloula borealis fed on Diptera sp. or Drosophilidae, which are slow but active and capable of flying. As a result, the Kaloula borealis take the sit-and-wait form of preying rather than actively searching for food. The results of this research on feeding habits of the Kaloula borealis will provide valuable resources to protect the endangered Kaloula borealis experiencing a sharp decline in their population and to prepare plans for population preservation strategies for them.

Flight of Matsucoccus thunbergianae Males in Response to Synthetic Pheromone Placed at Various Heights above Ground and the Wind Speed (합성(合成)페로몬의 지상(地上)높이별(別) 위치(位置) 및 풍속(風速)에 따른 솔껍질깍지벌레 수컷의 비행(飛行))

  • Matsucoccus thunbergianae is a major insect pest of Pinus thunbergiana in southern Korean peninsula. To study the flight behavior of M. thunbergianae males responding to the synthetic pheromone, five sticky traps were placed on a bamboo pole at various heights, between 0.1m and 2.0m above ground. A bait impregnated with the synthetic pheromone was placed at 0.1m, 1.0m or 2.0m above ground and the number of male catches on each trap was counted. In an open area, numbers of males caught per trap were not different between heights when the bait was placed at 2m or 1m above ground ; when the bait was placed at 0.1m height, male flight was aggregated near the ground. In a forest with low crown closure, trap catches on five traps on the same bamboo pole were not different one another when the bait was placed at 2m height, but most males were flying near the bait when it was placed at 1m height. In a dense pine forest, most males were flying around the bait regardless of the bait position. In all three places, most males were caught on the trap near the ground when the baits were placed 0.1m above ground. Thus, for monitoring the frontal zone of infestation of the scale, placing the pheromone trap near the ground was considered the most efficient. When the males perceived pheromone, they tended to fly in the air with low wind speed.

Morphological Differences of the Flight Muscle among Xylocopa appendiculata circumvolans Smith, Davidins lunatus B. and Serrognathus platymelus castanicdor M. (어리호박벌, 쇠측범잠자리, 넓적사슴벌레의 날개근육의 형태학적 차이)

  • The present study was performed to compare the morphological differences of flight muscles among 3 species from insects (Xylocopa appendiculata circumvolans Smith, Davidins lunatus B. and Serrognathus platymelus castanicdor M.) by investigating ultrastructural observation and stereological analysis. Xylocopa appendiculata circumvolans Smith has the most flight hours. In addition, the number and arrangement of mitochondria and the structure of sarcomere were similar to those of vertebrates. However sarcomere structure of Davidins lunatus B. was irregular and the sarcomere length was longer than that of Xylocopa appendiculata circumvolans Smith. In Serrognathus platymelus castanicdor M. which has the least flight hours, the length of sarcomere appeared longer than that of Davidins lunatus B. In results of stereological analysis, Serrognathus platymelus castanicdor M. had the highest volume density of myofibrils in all species. The volume and numerical density of mitochondria and the volume density of sarcoplasmic reticulum were highest Xylocopa appendiculata circumvolans Smith and Davidins lunatus B. respectively. This study suggests that the flight hours and flight pattern by different ecological habitats may cause the morphological changes of flight muscle.

  • Behavior of Matsucoccus thunbergianae Miller and Park males immediately after emergence from their cocooning site, and meteorological factors affecting the responsiveness of the flying males to synthetic pheromone were studied. On Pinus thunbergii saplings, newly emerged males walked around to locate females. The males lanuched themselves into flight after up to three times of copulation. Without the presence of females, the males took off within five minutes whereas when the females were placed nearby but copulation was artifically prohibited the males did not take off. In a wind tunnel, the presence of female pheromone discouraged male take off. More males were flying in sunny area than in shade, but light intensity had no effect on the responsiveness of males toward the pheromone source. Wind speed was the main meteorological factor that affected the male responsiveness. Most males, after hitting the substrate near pheromone source with various posture, stood on their feet and approached the source.
