The diesel engine and reduction gear combination is one of the common propulsion system in a naval vessel. Since the diesel engine has torsional vibration caused by reciprocating motion of the mass and gas pressure force of the cylinder, high cycle torsional fatigue can be occurred. Therefore, ROK navy restricts the maximum stress of the propulsion shaft according to MIL G 17859D. In this paper, the root cause for the failure of the diesel engine and reduction gear connecting shaft occurred in typical naval vessel is investigated based on the measured bending and torsional moment according to MIL G 17859D procedure.
Diesel power plant can be used as a power supplier for the isolated place where consumption of electric power is variable. The reason is that mobility and durability of diesel engine is superior to those of other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages for using these diesel engines such as bigger vibratory excitation force comparing to the others, which result from high combustion pressure of cylinders and inertia force of piston reciprocating masses. In this paper, control and optimization of torsional vibration of 12K90MC-S engine for diesel power plant using uneven crank angles is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

The lateral forces such as the earthquake and wind my cause the torsion to be coupled with the lateral bending in the gider, the cross-section of wich has only one axis of symmetry. This induces additional stresses especially in cables arranged in double-planes. Since this effect cannot be considered by using the conventional frame elements, the stiffness and the mass matrices of the geometrically nonlinear thin-walled frame element are developed in this study to model the girder. The equivalent modulus of elasticity proposed by Ernst is used for the cable elements. Verification of the present theory is made through a numerical example. Then, the free vibration of a three dimensional cable-stayed bridge is analyzed to study the coupled flexural-torsional behavior.
It is very important to analyze the torsional vibration for the propulsion shafting of ship. The authors have developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) as a vibration analysis algorithm. The concept of the TSCM is based on the successive transfer of stiffness coefficient. The effectiveness of the TSCM was verified through many applications. In this paper, the TSCM is applied to the torsional free vibration analysis for the propulsion shafting of an actual shin with a diesel engine. In order to calculate the additional torsional stresses of the propulsion shafting the torsional forced vibration for the shafting is analyzed by using both the modal analysis method and the results of the torsional free vibration analysis by the TSCM. The accuracy of the present method is confirmed by comparing with the vibration analysis results of engine maker.

The trend on marine diesel engine productions and refinements has led to a higher mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. These resulted in increased maximum combustion pressure within the cylinder and vibratory torque in crankshaft. In view of this. the crankshaft should be able to withstand the dynamic stresses caused by load variations. Different factors including size, material and stress concentration factors should also be considered to ensure the reliability of the shafting system. As such, crankshaft must be designed and compacted within its fatigue strength. In this paper, the strength analysis of crankshaft Is carried out by: simplified method recommended by IACS(International Association Classification Societies) M53 and a detailed method with the crankshaft assumed as a continuous beam and bearing supported in its flexibility. The results of these two methods are then compared.

Controllable pitch propeller(CPP) is usually adopted for easy and effective engine controls of a ship in a port. Unfortunately the torsional vibration may occur by a certain variation of engine torque and the major resonance peak may exist within the maximum continuous rating(MCR) In these cases an additional stress concentration on the oil passages such as longitudinal slots notches and circular holes of an oil distributor shaft(ODS) occurs by the torsional vibration of the CPP shaft. In this paper an analysis for the fatigue limit of an ODS system of the 5S70MC engine in a crude oil carrier is done by applying FEM and empirical formulas. Furthermore the additional stress on the ODS is investigated by analyzing the torsional vibration of the shaft system and a control method in which a tuning damper is adopted is introduced in the case of the additional stress exceeds the fatigue limit. The validity of analysis method is verified by comparing the results acquired by an actual measurement of the vibratory torque for the above ODS

The increasing needs for higher cargo capacity in the container vessels' fleet has led to ship builder's demand for higher power output rating engine to meet the propulsion requirement, thus, leading to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. This large sized bore engines with more than 12 cylinders are capable of delivering power output up to more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. The thrust variation force due to axial vibration occurring in propulsion shafting of these ships are transmitted to ship structure via thrust bearing. This force may vibrate the super structure of ship in the fore-aft direction and the fatigue strength of crank shaft can be decreased by additional bending stress increase in crank shaft pin and journal. In this paper, the axial vibration of propulsion shafting system on the 14RT-flex96C super large diesel engine with 14 cylinders is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

Torsional interaction between electrical network phenomena and turbine-generator shaft cause torsional stress on turbine-generator shaft and torsional fatigue fracture on vulnerable component, but the prediction of the torsional stress is difficult because the torsional stress is occurred instantly and randomly. Therefore continuous monitoring of the torsional stress on turbine-generator shaft is necessary to predict the torsional fatigue, but installing the sensors on the surface of the shaft directly to monitor the stress is impossible practically. In this study torsional vibration was measured using magnetic sensor at a point of turbine-generator rotor kit, the torsional stress of whole train of rotor kit was calculated using rotor kit's stress model and the calculated results were verified in comparison with the measured results using strain gauge at several point of turbine-generator rotor kit. It is expected that these experiment results will be used effectively to calculate the torsional stress of whole train of turbine-generator rotor in power plants.
This paper describes the evaluation of structural performance test and finite element analysis to verify the design of Bimodal Tram made of sandwich composites. The sandwich composite applied to vehicle structure was composed of a aluminum honeycomb core and WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite facesheet. The load tests of vehicle structure were conducted for vertical load, compressive load, torsion and modal analysis according to JlS E 7105. The structural Integrity of vehicle was evaluated by the measurement of displacement, stress and natural frequency obtained from dial gauge, strain gauge and gravity sensor, respectively. And finite element analysis using ANSYS v11.0 was done to compare with structural test. The results showed that the displacement, stress and natural frequency were in an good agreement with those of structural analysis using the proposed finite element models.

Two types of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures having irregularity in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes, and nonlinear time history analysis was performed using OpenSees to verify the analysis technique and to investigate the seismic capacity of those buildings. One of the buildings studied had a symmetrical moment-resisting frame (BF), while the other had an infilled shear wall in only one of the exterior frames (ESW). A fiber model, consisting of concrete and reinforcing bar represented from the stress-strain relationship, was adapted and used to simulate the nonlinearity of members, and MVLEM (Multi Vertical Linear Element Model) was used to simulate the behavior of the wall. The analytical results simulate the behavior of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures well, including the stiffness and yield force of piloti stories, the rocking behavior of the upper structure and the variation of the axial stiffness of the column due to variation in loading condition. However, MVLEM has a limitation in simulating the abrupt increasing lateral stiffness of a wall, due to the torsional mode behavior of the building. The design force obtained from a nonlinear time history analysis was shown to be about $20{\sim}30%$ smaller than that obtained in the experiment. For this reason, further research is required to match the analytical results with real structures, in order to use nonlinear time history analysis in designing a piloti-type high-rise RC building.
