  • Fiber reinforced composite materials have outstanding specific strength and specific stiffness. So the use of composite materials increases in various kinds of industrial fields including sports goods such as bicycles. Composite materials are used to make structural parts with various kinds of shapes. Specially, rectangular composite tubes are used to make a few of composite bicycle frames, but there has been a few of research on this issue. Rectangular composite tubes are designed to have appropriate radius of curvature and endure bending and torsional loads. In this research, nine kinds of rectangular composite tubes having aspect ratios 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2 and radius of curvatures R5, R10, R15 were fabricated. The carbon fiber reinforced composite material was used to make tubes having same cross sectional areas. The stacking sequence of tubes is $[0/90/{\pm}45]s$. Experimental evaluation was accomplished to apply bending and torsional load to the tubes. Experimental results show that bending and torsional characteristics depend on radius of curvature and aspect ratio of rectangular composite tubes.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials. The unique characteristics of SMAs enable the production of large force and displacement. Hence, SMAs can be used in many applications such as in actuators and active structural acoustic controllers; the SMAs can also be used for dynamic tuning and shape control. A SMA torque tube actuator consisting of SMA tubes and superelastic springs is proposed, and the behaviors of the actuator are investigated. From the results of heat transfer analysis, it is proved that the SMA torque tube actuator with both resistive heating of SMA itself and a separate conventional heating rod in the tube core has good performance. The behavior of an actuator system was analyzed by performing a contact analysis, and the twisting motion was noticed when checking the actuation. 3D SMA nonlinear constitutive equations were formulated numerically and implemented by performing a nonlinear analysis by using Abaqus UMAT.

  • Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test(τ/σ= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio τ/σ. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.

  • The compressive and torsional buckling behavior of carbon nanotube bundles at room temperature is examined with classical molecular dynamics simulation. The critical compressive load and stiffness of a single carbon nanotube in the bundle are found to be similar to those of individual carbon nanotubes. However, the critical torsional moment and stiffness of a single carbon nanotube in the bundle are found to be higher than those of individual carbon nanotubes. In addition, this study demonstrates that van der Waals interactions between the nanotubes in the bundle significantly affect the critical compressive load of the nanotube bundle.

  • With regard to complex-shaped tall buildings whose plans and constructions have been gradually on the increase, this study was aimed to analyze their structural behaviors during construction by applications of construction sequences analyses to prototype models. For twisted tall buildings, total 18 models of with three conditions of a lateral load-resisting system, a twisting angle, and a construction method were selected. A diagrid system and a braced tube system were applied as a lateral load-resisting system. For each lateral load-resisting system, three types of plan with $0^{\circ}$, $1^{\circ}$, and $2^{\circ}$ twisting angles and three construction methods with construction sequences of exterior tube and interior frame were assumed. The structural performances of tall buildings under constructions were analyzed with results of lateral displacements from construction sequence analyses. Also, construction performances of the construction period and the maximum lift weight were compared.

  • Since composite materials have anisotropic properties that depend on their stacking angle and sequence, the analysis of joints with isotropic adherends is limited in describing the behavior of the adhesive Joint with composite adherends. In this study, the nonlinear solution for adhesive joints with composite adherends was derived by incorporating the nonlinear behavior of the adhesive into the analysis. The behavior of the laminated composite tube was first analyzed, and the stress distributions of the composite tubular adhesive joint were calculated by including the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. The effect of the stacking sequence of composite adherends and bonding length on torque capacities of joints was examined, and results of the nonlinear analysis were also compared with those of the linear analysis.

  • The adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint shows a nonlinear relationship between the applied torque and the resulting displacement under the static-torsional loading, which is induced from the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. However the torque transmission capability in the case of the dynamic-torsional loading is much less than that in the case of the static-torsional loading, the stress level of the adhesive is usually in the region of the linear stress and strain relation and the stress distributions of the joint can be obtained by the linear analysis. In this paper, a failure model for the adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint under the torsional fatigue loading was developed with respect to the adhesive thickness that was a critical factor in predicting the static torque transional-cyclic loadings was proposed.

  • The objective of this research is to examine how the lateral resisting system of selected prototypes are affected by seismic zone effect and shape irregularity on its seismic performance. The lateral resisting systems are divided into the three types, diagrid, braced tube, and outrigger system. The prototype models were assumed to be located in LA, a high-seismicity region, and in Boston, a low-seismicity region. The shape irregularity was classified with rotated angle of plane, $0^{\circ}$, $1^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$. This study performed two parts of analyses, Linear Response and Non-Linear Response History(NLRH) analysis. The Linear Response analysis was used to check the displacement at the top and natural period of models. NLRH analysis was conducted to invest base shear and story drift ratio of buildings. As results, the displacement of roof and natural period of three structural systems increase as the building stiffness reduces due to the changes in rotation angle of the plane. Also, the base shear is diminished by the same reason. The result of NLRH, the story drift ratio, that was subject to Maximum Considered Earthquake(MCE) satisfied 0.045, a recommended limit according to Tall Building Initiative(TBI).

  • The temperature and loading-rate dependence on the mechanical behavior of single-walled carbon nanotubes under axial compression and torsion is examined with classical molecular dynamics simulation. The critical buckling is found to depend on the temperature and loading-rate. The yielding under torsion is also found to depend on the temperature and loading-rate. But it is shown that the compression and torsional stiffness are independent of the varied temperatures and loading-rates.
