Current torsional provisions focus n restricting torsional effect of asymmetric wall structures by proportioning strength of wall based on the traditional assumption that stiffness and strength are independent. Recent studies have pointed out that stiffness of structural wall is dependent on the strength. This implies that actual stiffness of walls can be determined only after torsional design is finished and current torsional provisions may result in significant errors. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes deformation based torsional design for asymmetric wall structures. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Main purpose of deformation based torsional design is not to restrict torsional response but to ensure intended torsional mechanism according to the capacity design concept. Because displacement and rotation angle can be used as performance criteria indicating performance level of asymmetric structures, this method can be applied to the performance based seismic design effectively.

To reduce the vulnerability of torsional irregular buildings caused by seismic loads, the torsional amplification factor was introduced by the seismic code. This factor has been applied differently in a variety of seismic codes. In this study, the final static eccentricity, and the lateral and torsional stiffness ratios of buildings designed with different design eccentricities were compared. The increment of the torsional amplification factor resulted in a decrement of the final static eccentricity of the building. However, after reaching the maximum value of this factor, the final static eccentricity of the building increased again. The final static eccentricity of the building designed by multiplying the sum of the inherent and accidental eccentricity by the torsional amplification factor was zero or had a minus value, depending to the position of the vertical element.
Shear test procedure for concrete-dowel interaction was proposed along with determination of dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant using the spreadsheet example. For this task, three AASHTO-type standard specimens were prepared to simulate behavior of the jointed concrete pavement. A side support system was adopted to minimize twisting of the test specimen which had been observed in a preliminary test. A typical elastic behavior of the dowel-concrete interaction was observed from several test loops of loading, unloading and reloading procedures. However load versus slab displacement represents to be nonlinear. Test results show that the dowel support reaction factor ranges from 550-880 GN/m3, which is 1.4-2.2 times greater than 407GN/m3 proposed by Yoder and Witczak. This is because less torsional distraction was occurred with the help of a side support system adopted in this experiment. The dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant obtained from the procedures proposed in this paper may be used as a reference data for the structural analysis of jointed concrete pavement.

The extensional stiffness in quasi-isotropic laminates is uniform in the radial direction, but the bending stiffness varies radially due to the stacking sequence. This paper addresses the directional dependency of the bending stiffness and its radial variation in three types of quasi-isotropic laminate reflectors consisting of unidirectional fiber composite materials (UDM) and randomly distributed composite materials (short fiber, RDM). The extensional stiffness and bending stiffness in optical reflectors using RDM are uniform, while the bending stiffness in those using UDM varies radially from 11% to 26%. Also, the stiffness sensitivity, such as the bend-twist or bend-torsion effect, due to the differences in the stiffness value in the composite, is large. These factors are problematic in the optical field requiring precision surfaces. Utilizing RDM might be one way to eliminate the presence of bending stiffness in composite mirror substrates.

A two-dimensional cross-section analysis program based on the finite element method has been developed for composite blades with solid, thin-walled and compound cross-sections. The weighted-modulus method is introduced to determine the laminated composite material properties. The shear center and the torsion constant for any given section are calculated according to the Trefftz' definition and the St. Venant torsion theory, respectively. The singular value problem of cross-section stiffness properties faced during the section analysis has been solved by performing an eigenvalue analysis to remove the rigid body mode. Numerical results showing the accuracy of the program obtained for stiffness, offset and inertia properties are compared in this analysis. The current analysis results are validated with those obtained by commercial software and published data available in the literature and a good correlation has generally been achieved through a series of validation study.

Design routines of a torsional spring-viscous damper for a 1800 kW four cycle diesel engine-generator system are described. Modal techniques for system normalization and optimal equations for damper design are used to obtain proper design parameters of the damper. A prototype damper is manufactured according to the described design process and its two design parameters, stiffness and damping, are evaluated experimentally by torsional actuator test and free decay test. Experimentally obtained values of stiffness and damping coefficients showed good agreements with the designed values of the prototype damper.

Marine reduction gears are usually used to increase the propulsion efficiency of propellers for ships powered by medium and small sized high speed diesel engines. Most of shaft systems adopt flexible couplings to absorb the transmitted vibratory torque from the engines to the reduction gears and to prevent the chattering phenomenon of reduction gears. However some elastic couplings show non-linear characteristics due to the variable torque transmitted from the main engines and the change of ambient temperature. In this study dynamic characteristics of flexible couplings sare investigated and their effects upon various vibratory conditions of propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of torsional vibration for the propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of Results of the program developed are compared with ones of the existing linear method and propulsion systems with the elastic couplings the transfer matrix method is adopted which is found to give satisfied results.

In this study the modal characteristics and responses of an asymmetric structure with added viscoelastic dampers were investigated for design parameters such as eccentricity of stiffness and added dampers, the loss factor of the damping materials used. For modal characteristics, variation of the quantities such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios, modal participation factors, and dynamic amplification factors were observed, and displacements at flexible and stiff edges, and at center of mass were obtained. Based on the results, the problem of the optimum damper distribution to minimize the torsional effects was addressed, and the proposed method for optimum damper distribution was applied to a multi-story structure to verify the applicability Finally the effect of viscous and viscoelastic dampers were compared by varying the loss factor of the viscoelastic material.
