  • Three-hinge failure occurs in a jointed rock slope with a joint set parallel with slope and a conjugate joint set. Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM) which are commonly used for slope design, are not suitable for evaluating stability against three-hinge failure, and this study performed parametric study to analyze the failure mechanism and to find influence factors causing three-hinge failure using UDEC which is a commercial two-dimensional DEM based numerical program. Numerical analyses were performed for various joint structural conditions and joint properties as well as ground water conditions. It was found that pore water pressure is the main factor triggering the three-hinge failure and the mode of failure depends on friction angle of basal joint and bedding joint set. The results obtained from this study can be used for adequate and economic footwall slope reinforcement design and construction.

  • Even if the various data analyzing methods were suggested to examine the measured slope behaviors, it is difficult to find methods or procedures for connecting the analyzed results of slope stability and measured slope data. This research suggests the analyzing methods combing the stability analysis and measured data based on progressive failure of slope. Slope failure analysis by time degradation were calculated by strength parameters composed of strength reduction coefficients, also which were compared to the measured data according to the variations of safety factor and displacement of slopes. The accumulated displacement curve were shown as 3rd degree polynomials by suggested procedures, which was the same as before researches. The reverse displacement velocity curves were shown as linear function for prediction of brittle slope failures, also they were shown as 3rd degree polynomials for ductile slope failures, which were the same as the suggested equation by Fukuzono (1985) and they were very similar behaviors to the in-situ failure cases.

  • This study investigated a cut-slope surface containing Tertiary faults, representing a conical-shaped slope with strike varying from N44°E to NS, N50°W, and finally N70°E. The slope consists mainly of basalt, with discontinuities in the slope including faults, fault zones, fracture zones, shear joints, and extension joints. The type and scale of failure vary with the strike of the slope and the strikes of discontinuities, with plane and wedge failure predominating. Based on face-mapping data, SMR (slope mass rating), rock physical and mechanical properties, analysis of stereonet projections and geological cross-sections, and critical equilibrium analysis, optimal slope stability determination was found to involve the countermeasure method, the slope gradient relief method, the green soil surface treatment method, and a fall prevention measure. After application of the countermeasure method, both dry and wet slope conditions exceeded allowable safety factors. It is expected that the preparation of geological cross-sections of various representative sections perpendicular to the surface of the slope, and the application of corresponding countermeasure methods, will be reasonable tools for three-dimensional analysis of slope stability. If the strike of the slope varies widely, it is necessary to prepare geological cross-sections, and the section used for critical equilibrium analysis must be established as the basic section.

  • The limit equilibrium method (LEM) is commonly used for slope design and stability analysis because it is easy to simulate slope and requires short calculating time. However, LEM cannot adequately simulate ploughing failure in a footwall slope with a joint set dipping parallel with slope, e.g. bedding joint set. This study performed parametric study to analyze the influence factors on ploughing failure using UDEC which is a commercial two-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method)-based numerical program. The influence of joint structure and properties on stability of a footwall slope against ploughing failure was investigated, and the factor of safety was estimated using the shear strength reduction method. It was found that the stability of footwall slope against ploughing failure strongly relies on dip angle of conjugate joint, and the critical bedding joint spacing and the critical length of slab triggering ploughing failure are also affected by dip angle of conjugate joint. The results obtained from this study can be used for effective slope design and construction including reinforcement.

  • Slopes are commonly formed both above and below roads located in mountainous terrain and along riversides. The Buk-sil site, a cut slope formed below the road, collapsed in October, 2010. A field investigation determined the causes of failure as improper drainage of valley water from the slope above the road and direct seepage of road-surface water. These factors may have accelerated the collapse via complex interaction between water and sub-surface structures such as bedding. Projection analysis of the site showed the possible involvement of plane, wedge, and toppling failure. Safety factors calculated by Limit Equilibrium Analysis for plane and wedge failure were below the standard for wet conditions. The wetness index, analyzed using topographic factors of the study area, was 9.0-10.5, which is high compared with the values calculated for nearby areas. This finding indicates a high concentration of water flow. We consider that water-flow control on the upper road is crucial for enhancing slope stability at the Buk-sil site.

  • This study is an analysis of slope failure examples of cut sedimentary hills during construction road in Kyoungsang Basin, especially Yangsan Fault system (Ilkwang-Dongrae fault). This area involved a lot of hillslope failures compared to other areas during road construction. The exposed failure slopes were first face-mapped, and then back analyzed based on the limit equilibrium method to assess the shear strength parameters of discontinuity (bedding). The results of this analysis indicate that the shear strength parameters of discontinuity (bedding) are significantly smaller than those used in the design stage and presented in the existing works. The filling in the bedding and emerging groundwater may be decreasing strength parameters. Especially, the clay in the bedding plays a key role in the effect of the shear strength. The study also suggests that the bedding angle and the internal friction angle are proportional to each other. Using this relationship and knowing the bedding angle, the friction can easily be estimated.

  • In the design of slopes during rainfall, the groundwater level is assumed to be located at the ground surface, based on the change in characteristics of rainfall. In addition, stability investigations are performed for large cut slopes in the design of slopes while standard inclinations specified in the design criteria are applied for the slopes that stability investigations are not performed. In spite of the strengthened criteria of groundwater location, slope failures continuously occur during heavy rainfall, regardless of magnitude of slopes. In order to investigate the cause of the failures, stability investigations have been performed on standard inclination of slopes suggested in the design criteria for both dry and rainfall cases by ground condition in this research. Despite that standard inclination of slopes specified in the design criteria should be stable for both dry and rainfall cases, the results show that standard factor of safety has not been obtained in many cases; more than 50% of total cases for dry cases and more than 65% of total cases for rainfall case. Based on the results, this paper indicates the problems in the current design criteria and proposes the plans for establishment of countermeasure.

  • In general, many instrumentations of slope rely on theory or experience because on-site accessibility and long term instrumentation are difficult to conduct the instrumentation of slopes. Also the prediction of disaster is very difficult. Therefore experimental research was conducted about an effective method to predict collapse of slope and on-site applicability in this study. The collapse of slope was able to be predicted by applying AE sensor which we call WEAD to the failure criteria. The parameters of AE generated during the collapse of slope were secured through bending shear test. Test construction was applied to the slope with a history and a possibility of collapse. As a result, it is shown that AE parameters do not exceed the failure criterion and is found to be stable slopes. As the real symptoms of collapse did not appear, AE was found to have excellent applicability.
