The purpose of this paper is to provide and verify an analytical method, based on the spline finite strip method, which can be used to investigate the buckling mode and stress of thin-walled steel sections. Geometric imperfection and initial stress of plates and plate assemblies, which are resulted from various preloadings and may cause prebuckling deformations before buckling, are included in the analysis. Material nonlinearity and residual stress are also considered. It can be applied to sections with simple or non-simple boundary conditions and arbitrary loading. The method has been applied to investigate the buckling behavior of plates and plate assemblies which are subjected to compression with initial imperfections and residual stresses.

This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams subjected to uniformly distributed load and end moments. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) and a regression program MINITAB(2006) were used to analytically develop new design equation for singly and doubly stepped beams with simple boundary condition. The flanges of the smaller cross-section in the stepped beams were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of the beams were kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered with analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995) and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The comparisons between results from proposed equations and the results from finite element analyses were presented in this paper. The maximum differences of two results are of 13% for the doubly stepped beam and 10% for the singly stepped beam. The proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.
Well-designed steel moment connections will undergo local buckling before they exhaust their available rotation capacity, and inelastic post-buckling deformation plays a major role in defining the connection rotation capacity. An approximate analytical method to model strength degradation and failure of beam plastic hinges due to local buckling and estimation of the seismic rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames under both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is proposed in this study. This method is based on the plastic mechanism and a yield line plastic hinge (YLPH) model whose geometry is determined using the shapes of the buckled plastic hinges observed in experiments. The proposed YLPH model was developed for the improved WUF-W and RBS connections and validated in comparison with experimental data. The effects of the beam section geometric parameters on the rotation capacity were discussed in the companion paper (parametric studies).

The sigmoid functionally graded mateiral(S-FGM) theory is reformulated using the nonlocal elatictiry of Erigen. The equation of equilibrium of the nonlocal elasticity are derived. This theory has ability to capture the both small scale effects and sigmoid function in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents for material properties through the plate thickness. Navier's method has been used to solve the governing equations for all edges simply supported boundary conditions. Numerical solutions of biaxial buckling of nano-scale plates are presented using this theory to illustrate the effects of nonlocal theory and power law index of sigmoid function on buckling load. The relations between nonlocal and local theories are discussed by numerical results. Further, effects of (i) power law index, (ii) length, (iii) nonlocal parameter, (iv) aspect ratio and (v) mode number on nondimensional biaxial buckling load are studied. To validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are discussed.
The free vibrations of thermally buckled, simply supported, symmetrically laminated, rectangular, and quasi-isotropic plates are investigated. The nonlinear postbuckling analysis is performed by the finite element method based on the first order shear deformable plate theory with the use of von Karman type nonlinear strains and the Duhamel-Newman type constitutive law. The postbuckling solutions are used to obtain free vibration responses of buckled plates. Several numerical examples for quasi-isotropic laminated plates are considered. The effects of width-to-thickness ratios and aspect ratios on the free vibration characteristics of buckled plates are investigated.

The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundations. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibrations and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundation are derived as nondimensional forms. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalues(natural frequencies and buckling loads), respectively. Hinged-hinged and damped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The relation between frequency parameter and elastic foundation parameter is presented in figure. The effects of axial loads on the natural frequencies of beam-columns on elastic foundations are investigated and the relation between buckling load parameter and elastic foundation parameter is also analyzed. The relation between foundation rested ratio and frequency parameter, buckling load parameter are investigated. The beam-columns on non-homogeneous elastic foundation are analyzed and typical mode shapes are also presented.

In this paper, lateral-torsional buckling(LTB) strength of HSB800 high strength steel plate girder with monosymmetric section under uniform moment was evaluated by nonlinear analysis. The unbraced length in inelastic LTB range was considered for the sections whose smaller or larger flange is in compression with slender, noncompact and compact web. Analyses of SM490 steel girders were first performed with the single-panel and three-panel model to judge the validity of the constructed models by comparing those results with Eurocode 3, AASHTO and AISC codes. By using the same models, LTB strength of HSB800 girder was evaluated and it was found that the sections whose smaller flange is in compression with noncompact flange-slender/noncompact web could not reach the flexural strength of the design codes.
There are many restrictions in the application of high-strength HSSs, including yield strength and yield ratio for the 600-MPa steel. The AISC and Canadian codes recommend that the yield strength and yield ratio of HSS members be 360 MPa and 80%, respectively. It is important to understand the true buckling behaviors of HSSs using high-strength steel at the limit states. There are many experimental data regarding the rectangular HSSs, and the circular ones are not enough for high-strength steel. Therefore, this study was conducted to create a better understanding of the buckling behaviors of the 600- and 400-MPa steels based on the results of the finite-element analysis that was done before the experiment. To understand the structural behaviors of the aforementioned steels, the width-to-thickness ratios, the angle of the web members, the yield strength, and the gap of the web members were selected as the main parameters in this study, and ABAQUS, a general finite-element program, was used.As a result, the compression web member reached elastic buckling in the 600-MPa steel and inelastic buckling in the 400-MPa steel. A brittle fracture occurred in the case where the yield ratio was greater than 80%. At the same time, it was found that the limit strength determined via FEM analysis had a higher value compared to the code evaluation with the variation of the width-to-thickness ratio in the main code member. The change in the connection load in high-strength steels was not identified by the other factors.

The classical buckling theory assumes that prebuckling behavior is linear and that the effect of prebuckling deformations on buckling can be ignored. However, when the rise to span ratio decreases, prebuckling deformation cannot be ignored and the symetrical buckling strength can be smaler than the asymetrical buckling strength. Finally, arches can fail due to snap-through buckling. This paper investigates the non-linear behavior and strength of pin-ended parabolic shallow arches using the non-linear governing differential equation of shallow arches. These results were compared with the solution for the symmetrical buckling load of pin-ended parabolic shallow arches was suggested.
