  • This paper presents a numerical method for implementing a nonlinear constitutive material model developed by Lade, into a finite element computer program. The techniques used are based on the displacement method for the solution of axial symmetric and plane strain nonlinear boundary value problems. Laboratory behaviour of Baekma river sand(#40-60) is used to illustrate the determination of the parameters and verification of the model. Computer procedure is developed to determine the material parameters for the nonlinear model from the raw laboratory test data. The model is verified by comparing its predictions with observed data used for the determination of the parameters and then with observed data not used for the determination. Three categories of tests are carried out in the back-prediction exercise; (1) A hydrostatic test including loading and unloading response, (2) Conventional triaxial drained compression tests at three different confining pressure and (3) A model strip footing test not including in the evaluation of material parameters. Pertinent observations are discussed based on the comparison of predicted response and experimental data.

  • It is absolutely essential that safety assessment of the containment buildings during service life because containment buildings are last barrier to protect radioactive substance due to the accidents. Therefore, this study describes an enhanced degenerated shell finite element(FE) which has been developed for nonlinear FE analysis of reinforced concrete(RC) containment buildings with elasto-plastic material model. For the purpose of the material nonlinear analysis, Drucker-Prager failure criteria is adapted in compression region and material parameters which determine the shape of the failure envelop are derived from biaxial stress tests. Reissner-Mindlin(RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the degenerated shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. However, it is found that there are serious defects such as locking phenomena in RM degenerated shell FE since the stiffness matrix has been overestimated in some situations. Therefore, shell formulation is provided in this paper with emphasis on the terms related to the stiffness matrix based on assumed strain method. Finally, the performance of the present shell element to analysis RC containment buildings is tested and demonstrated with several numerical examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.

  • Analysis of cable structures is complex because their force - displacement relationships are highly nonlinear and also because large deformations introduce geometric nonlinearity. Therefore, we must take account their geometric nonlinearity in the analysis and find the equilibrated shape of cable structures. In this paper, to slove these problems, numerical procedures involving geometrical nonlinearity are introduced. They are applicable to general cable net, flexible transmission lines and suspended cable roof. These procedures are divided into two parts; one is to obtain the equilibrated shapes and stresses of the cable structures with uniform load by flexibility iteration method, the other is to analyse the equilibrated structures subjected to nodal external forces by nonlinear finite element method.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of prestressed concrete deep beams and to provide the data for development of improved design criteria. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. Hence, in this study, the computer program, named RCAHEST (reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. A bonded or unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. The proposed numerical method for the shear behavior of prestressed concrete deep beams is verified by comparing the analytical results with test data by others.

  • This paper presents development of a geometrically nonlinear triangular planar element including rotational degrees of freedom, based on the co-rotational(CR) formulation. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations and it is based on the assumptions on small strain and large rotation. In this paper, modified CR formulation is suggested for the developemnt of a triangular planar element. The present development is validated regarding the static and time transient problems. The present results are compared with the results predicted by the previous researchers and those obtained by the existing commercial software.

  • The linear analysis for the balance of linear momentum of a structure is relatively easy to perform, but the error becomes large when the structure experiences large deformation. Therefore, the material and geometric nonlinearity need to be considered for the precise calculations in that case. The plastic flow of a ductile steel-like metal mainly transforms its dissipated mechanical energy into heat, which transfers under the first and second law of thermodynamics. This heat increases the temperature of the material and the strength of the material decreases accordingly, which affects mechanical behavior of the given structure. This paper presents a finite-strain thermo-elasto-plastic steel model. This model can handle large deformation and thermal load simultaneously, which is common during earthquake periods. Two 3-dimensional finite element analyses verify this formulation.

  • The objective of this numerical analysis is to trace the hysteretic behavior of steel angles under very-low-cycle loading test, especially the history and cumulative state of local stress-strain at their critical parts. The computer model is based on a three-dimensional, non-linear analysis by using the finite element program, MSC/NASTRAN, which includes the effects of the material and geometric non-linearities. The analysis was performed as two stage procedures, namely Analysis I and II. The overall behavior from this analysis showed good agreement with the experiment.

  • The underground structure, which has infinite or semi-infinite boundary conditions, is subjected by body forces and in-situ stresses. It also has stress concentration, which causes material nonlinear behavior, in the vicinity of the excavated surface. In this paper, some methods which can be used to transform domain integrals into boundary integrals are reviewed in order to analyze the effect of the body forces and the in-situ stresses. First, the domain integral of the body force is transformed into boundary integral by using the Galerkin tensor and divergence theorem. Second, it is transformed by writing the domain integral in cylindrical coordinates and using direct integration. The domain integral of the in-situ stress is transformed into boundary integral applying the direct integral method in cylindrical coordinates. The methodology is verified by comparing the results from the boundary element analysis with those of the finite element analysis. Coupling the above boundary elements with finite elements, the nonlinear behavior that occurs locally in the vicinity of the excavation is analyzed and the results are verified. Thus, it is concluded that the domain integrals of body forces and in-situ stresses could be performed effectively by transforming them into the boundary integrals, and the nonlinear behavior can be reasonably analyzed by coupled nonlinear finite element and boundary element method. The result of this research is expected to he used for the analysis of the underground structures in the effective manner.

  • A nonlinear formulation of a beam finite element(NB6) on the total Lagrangian mode for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of two-dimensional elastic framed structures is presented. The NB6 beam element has been degenerated from the three-dimensional continuum by introducing the deep beam assumptions and consists of three reference nodes and three relative nodes. The element characteristics are derived by discretizing the beam equations of motion using the Galerkin weighted residual method and are reduced-integrated repeatedly for each loading step by the Newton-Raphson iteration techpique. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the proposed nonlinear NB6 beam element.
