  • Scientific challenges in the field of MR(magnetorheological) fluids and devices consist in the development of MR devices, the mathematical modeling and simulation of MR devices, and the development of (optimal) control algorithm for MR device systems. To take a maximum advantage of MR fluids in control applications a reliable mathematical model, which predicts their nonlinear characteristics, is needed. A inverse model of the MR device is required to calculate current(or voltage) input of MR damper, which generates required damping force. In this paper, we implemented test a bench for shear mode rotary MR damper and laboratory tests were performed to study the characteristics of the prototype shear-mode rotary MR damper. The direct identification and inverse dynamics modeling for shear mode rotary MR dampers using multi-layer neural networks are studied.

  • If semi-rigid connections are used for superstructures of very large floating structures (VLFS), the number of rigid connections can be reduced and more economical construction will be possible. In this study, considering service load and wave load in VLFS, the applicability of mixed use of rigid and semi-rigid connections have been studied using three types of connections for a four-bay eight-story frame. Three types of connections are used; top and seat-angle connections with double web-angle(TSD), extended end plate connections, steel tubular column with square external-diaphragm connections. ABAQUS(Finite element analysis program) is used for conducting second order elastic analysis.

  • This paper presents a seismic fragility analysis method for a cable-stayed bridge with energy dissipation devices. Model uncertainties represented by random variables include input ground motions, characteristics of energy dissipation devices and the stiffness of cable-stayed bridge. Using linear regression, we established demand models for the fragility analysis from the relationship between maximum responses and the intensity of input ground motions. For capacity models, we considered the moment and shear force of the main tower, longitudinal displacement of the girder, deviation of the stay cables tension and the local buckling of the main steel tower as the limit states for cable-stayed bridge. As a numerical example, fragility analysis results for the 2nd Jindo bridge are presented. The effect of energy dissipation devices is also briefly discussed.

  • This paper describes a new method for the design of variable structure model-following control systems(VSMFC). This design concept is developed using the theory of variable structure systems (VSS) and slide mode. The new results are presented on the sliding control methodology to achieve accurate tracking for a class of nonlinear, multi-input multi-output(MIMO), time varying systems in the presence of parameter variations. The design requires little computational effort. The dynamic response is insensitive to parameter variations. The feasibility and the advantages of the method are illustrated by applying it to a 1000 MWe boiling water reactor(BWR). The control is studied in the range of 85%∼90% of rated power for load-following control. A set of 12 nonlinear differential equations is used to simulate the total plant. A 6-th order linear model has been developed from these equations at 85% of rated power. The obtained controller is shown by simulations to be able to compensate for a plant parameter variation over a wide power range.

  • Dynamic analysis of a marine slender structure is often involved with contacts among bodies or between bodies and seafloor. This paper presents an efficient and general contact search algorithm for dynamics in the context of the compliance contact model. A global detecting method that a bounding box is divided into several pieces in global coordinate system is presented in this paper. The method has an advantage that the number of contacting searching can be smaller than other methods for a system. The developed an efficient contact search algorithm is applied to the simulation program of 3D nonlinear dynamics of slender structure. Some examples are presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • The control performance in active structural control system can be drastically deteriorated when the modeling errors and the uncertainties existing in the disturbances are disregarded in the designing stage. It can even throw the control system into an unstable phase, resulting in out of control against the seismic excitations. The purpose of the study is to investigate the control effectiveness of a non-linear control system called sliding mode controller(SMC) in cooperation with a Tuned Mass Damper subjected to the three seismic excitations selected from the FFT analysis. Even though the transient performance such as settling time and overshoot were deteriorated, the robustness against the system stability was appeared from SMC when the structural masses and stiffness perturbed within the range of ${\pm}30%$. SMC is a feasible technique for active structural control in cooperation with TMD against seismic disturbances, exhibiting robustness in perturbation of system stiffness and mass as well as uncertainties of the disturbances.

  • The focal mechanism of the Hongsung Earthquake (1978. Oct. 7, M$_L$=5.0, Latitude 36.62N, Longitude 1 26.67E) was evaulated using the polarity distribution of the P-Waveforms. Through the non-linear computer process, the compatibility of polarity distributions of the 9 P-Waveforms observed at teleseismic distances from the Hongsung Earthquake epicenter was investigated to those of the focal mechanism determined from the varying strike, dip and rake angles. The resultant values for the strike and dip angle of the principal fault plane, which apparently matches very well the sunface lineament of the Hongsung region, are determined to be about 247 degree and 78 degree with uncertainties, respectively. However, the rake angle of the focal mechanism has wide range of 40 degree to 160 degree, which is mainly due to the poor coverage of the azimuthal angle of the observed seismic stations. Due to the consistency of principal stress axes, the resultant focal mechanism could support the current stress regime of that region, which may be caused by subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Eurasia Plate along the Japan Trench. It also provides information of seismic source characteristics of the part of the Korean Peninsula for aseismic design criteria such as Site Specific Response Spectrum and Strong Ground Motion Time History for the nuclear power plants and related nuclear waste disposal facility sites.

  • Recently seismic fragility analysis method has been widely used for the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of infrastructures such as nuclear power plants, buildings and bridges because of its probabilistic characteristics. Furthermore, this technique has been applied to large-scale social systems consisted of each infrastructures by combing GIS. In this paper, the applicability of this technique to domestic infrastructural systems was studied. The transportation network was selected as one of these domestic infrastructural systems. Example studies were peformed about Changwon city. Nonlinear time history analysis, with a maximal likelihood approach were conducted to establish the fragility curves of each infrastrucures (bridges). GIS analysis was also applied to the analysis of whole infrastructural systems. The results show that it is very useful to predict seismic probabilistic risk assessment of this domestic transportation network. However, it also shows that further studies such as more suitable damage criterion to domestic structure and precise nonlinear analysis techniques should be developed to predict more precise results.

  • This paper represents a method for designing of path following Line-of-Sight(LOS) guidance law based on vehicle kinematics. In general, a LOS guidance law which is composed of gains and approach length as design parameters is designed by empirical or trial-and-error method. These approaches cannot guarantee a precision tracking performance of guidance law consistently. Also, the design parameters should be redesigned with variations of vehicle maneuverability and flight velocity. Based on a vehicle kinematics with its velocity, the proposed method for designing of parameters not only minimizes the number of design parameters, also has a reliable and consistent tracking performance using variable guidance gain changed in accordance with flight velocity. This is validated by nonlinear simulation with $1^{st}$ order attitude response dynamics and flight experiments with given linear and circular path.
