  • The finite element menthod for the investigation of the static and dynamic stability of the plane framed structures subjected to non-conservative forces is presented. By using the Hermitian polynomial as the shape function, the geometric stiffness matrix, the load correction stiffness matrix for non-conservative forces, and the matrix equation of internal and external damping are derived. Then, a matrix equation of the motion for the non-conservative system is formulated and the critical divergence and flutter loads are determined from this equation.

  • 본 논문에서는 하천에 유입되는 오염물질 중 대부분을 차지하는 비보존성 오염물질의 확산거동을 분석하기 위해 2차원 수심 평균된 이송분산방정식에 유한요소법을 적용하였다. 수치모형 구성을 위해 SUPG(Streamline-upwind Petrov-Galerkin)법을 이용한 가중잔차법을 사용하였다.

  • The complex nature of low flow transport and transformation of nonconservative pollutants in natural streams has been investigated using a numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a pair of mass balance equations describing the advection, dispersion, decay and mass exchange mechanisms in streams and in storage zones. In the present study, a mathematical model (named "Storage-Transformation Model") has been developed to predict adequately the non-Fickian nature of mixing and transformation mechanisms for decaying substances in natural streams under low flow conditions. Comparisons of the computed concentration-time curves with the measured data show that the Storage-Transformation Model yields better agreements in general shape, peak concentration and time to peak than the conventional 1-D dispersion model. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the 1-D dispersion model in predicting natural transport and transformation processes in streams through pools and riffles.

  • A solution strategy for geometric non-linear analysis for the plane frame structures subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this strategy can find postbuckling configuration such as snap-through and turning-back phenomena which cannot be easily found by the conventional load and displacement incrementation scheme. In the case of the analysis of the framed structure subjected to circulatory non-conservative forces, the total tangent stiffness matrix becomes unsymmetric and when calculating the incremental load and unbalanced load vector components, the direction change of the non-conservative forces is considered. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present strategy, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likly to occur in practical framed structures, are given and discussed.

  • A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative pollutants is applied to the Nakdong River to simulate the phenol spill accident which occurred on March, 1971. Prior to the dispersion calculation, the flow conditions are simulated to provide inputs to the dispersion model. An unsteady flow model based on Preissmann's four-point scheme is used for this purpose. Sensitivities of the dispersion calculation to empirical equations for dispersion coefficient and to the first-order decay coefficient are analyzed. The time to peak concentration at a downstream location is significantly different depending on the formula for the dispersion coefficient. Although the decay coefficient does not affect the shape of the temporal concentration distribution, the concentration values depend on the decay coefficient verb significantly. An optimization technique is used to calibrate the dispersion model as well as the flow model. The time to the peak concentration is simulated for major positions of water intake along the Nakdong River.

  • A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative contaminants is developed. It is based on splitting the longitudinal dispersion equation into a set of three equations each to be solved over a one-third time step. The fourth-order Holly-Preissmann scheme, an analytic solution, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme are used to solve the equations for the pure advection, the first-order decay, and the diffusion, respectively. To test the model, it is applied to simulate the longitudinal dispersion of continuous source released into a nonuniform flow field as well as the dispersion of an instantaneous source in a uniform flow field. The results are compared with the exact solution and those computed by an existing model. Compared to the existing model which uses Euler method for the first-order decay equation, the present model yield more accurate results as the decay coefficient increases.

  • In this paper, a general solution for the vibrational energy and intensity distribution through a compliant and dissipative joint between plate structures is derived on the basis of energy flow analysis (EFA). The joints are modeled by four sets of springs and dashpots to show their compliancy and dissipation in all four degrees of freedom. First, for the EFA, the power transmission and reflection coefficients for the joint on coupled plate structures connected at arbitrary angles were derived by the wave transmission approach. In numerical applications, EFA is performed using the derived coefficients for coupled plate structures under various joint properties, excitation frequencies, coupling angles, and internal loss factors. Numerical results of the vibrational energy distribution showed that the developed compliant and dissipative joint model successfully predicted the joint characteristics of practical structures vibrating in the medium-to-high frequency ranges. Moreover, the intensity distribution of a compliant and dissipative joint is described.

  • The dynamic behavior of elastic columns under the action of the subtangential force is studied in this paper. The subtangential force is the combination of the tip mass dead load and pure follower thrust. In this study, the tip mass is assumed to be a rigid body rather than a point mass. The equations of motion are derived based on the extended Hamilton's principle and the finite element method. Then the equations of motion are trasformed into a dimensionless form, and several parameters are identified. It is found that the critical subtangential force can be changed subtangentially by considering the parameters related to tip mass. It is also shown that the nonconservativeness of the applied force has a significant effect on the type of instability. The influence of the self-weight of the column on the variation of the critical force is also investigated.

  • An analysis is presented on the stability of an elastic cantilever column subjected to a concentrated follower force as to the influence of the elastic restraint and a tip mass at the free end. The elastic restraint is formed by the rotatory springs. For this purpose, the governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle, and the critical flutter loads and frequencies are obtained from the numerical evaluation of the eigenvalue functions of the considered system.
