  • This paper discusses a one-way fluid structural interaction (FSI) analysis and shape optimization of the impeller blades for a 15,000 HP centrifugal compressor using the response surface method (RSM). Because both the aerodynamic performance and the structural safety of the impeller are affected by the shape of its blades, shape optimization is necessary using the FSI analysis, which includes a structural analysis for the induced fluid pressure and centrifugal force. The FSI analysis is performed in ANSYS Workbench: ANSYS CFX is used for the flow field and ANSYS Mechanical is used for the structural field. The response surfaces for the FSI results (efficiency, pressure ratio, maximum stress, etc.) generated based on the design of experiments (DOE) are used to find an optimal shape for the impeller blades, which provides the maximum aerodynamic performance subject to the structural safety constraints.

  • This paper presents the performance characteristics of a Darrieus-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) with National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil blades. To estimate the optimum shape of the Darrieus-type wind turbine in accordance with various design parameters, we examine the aerodynamic characteristics and separated flow occurring in the vicinity of the blade, the interaction between the flow and blade, and the torque and power characteristics that are derived from it. We consider several parameters (chord length, rotor diameter, pitch angle, and helical angle) to determine the optimum shape design and characteristics of the interaction with the ambient flow. From our results, rotors with high solidity have a high power coefficient in the low tip-speed ratio (TSR) range. On the contrary, in the low TSR range, rotors with low solidity have a high power coefficient. When the pitch angle at which the airfoil is directed inward equals $-2^{\circ}$ and the helical angle equals $0^{\circ}$, the Darrieus-type VAWT generates maximum power.

  • In this study, a structural optimal design of 10 MW composite blade was performed using bend-twist coupled(BTC) design concept. Bend-twist coupling of blade means the coupling behavior between the bending and torsional deflections due to the composite lamina with fiber angle biased from the blade longitudinal axis. This can potentially improve the overall performance of composite blade and reduce the dynamic loading. Parametric studies on layup angle, thickness and area of off-axis carbon UD were conducted to find the optimum coupling effect with weight reduction. Comparing the results of fatigue load analysis between conventional model and BTC applied model, the damage equivalent load(DEL) of blade root area were decreased about 3% in BTC model. To verify the BTC effect experimentally, a 1:29 scaled model was fabricated and the torsion at the tip under deflection behavior of blade stiffener model was measured by static load test.

  • In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller and diffuser blades in the centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was evaluated. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various values of impeller and diffuser parameters, which consist of leading edge (LE) angle, trailing edge (TE) angle, and blade thickness. Each of the parameters was divided into three levels. A total of 45 design points were planned using central composite design (CCD), which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces that were generated on the basis of the results of DOE were used to determine the optimal shape of impeller and diffuser blade. The entire process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Through the optimization, isentropic efficiency and pressure recovery coefficient, which are the main performance parameters of the centrifugal compressor, were increased by 0.3 and 5, respectively.

  • In recent times, turbomolecular pumps (TMPs) have been used frequently to generate and maintain high and clean vacuum. Because of the high-speed rotation of the rotor, its structural safety should be treated as the first design concern. This paper presents the structural analysis and optimization of rotor blades of a TMP. To increase the numerical efficiency in the finite element modeling and analysis, the P-method provided in Pro/ENGINEER was used for simulation. The structural responses for several types of rotor blades were investigated, and the effects of the blade angle, blade length, and round size are thoroughly studied for each type of TMP blade. In addition, structural optimization to reduce and even the maximum stress at each stage of the TMP by changing the size of rounds between the blade and the hub was performed very successfully by using the P-method.

  • High pressure nozzles and turbines of a gas turbine engine should be required to be operated under extreme operating conditions in order to maximize the performance. Engine manufactures have utilized nickel-base superalloys, enhanced cooling design, and thermal barrier coating techniques to overcome them and furthermore, material modeling, finite element analysis, optimization techniques, and etc. have been utilized widely for elaborate predictions. We aim to evaluate the effects on the low cycle fatigue life of the high pressure turbine blade caused by thermal barrier coatings and the cooling design of the endwall of the first stage turbine nozzle. To achieve it, the structural analysis, which utilized the results of conjugate heat transfer analysis as loading boundary conditions, was performed and then the results were the input for the assessment of low cycle fatigue life at several critical zones.

  • A rotor blade is an important device that converts kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy. Rotor blades affect the power performance, energy conversion efficiency, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. This study examined the general blade design procedure for a wind turbine system and aero-structure design results for a 2-MW class wind turbine blade (KR40.1b). As suggested above, a rotor blade cannot be designed independently, because its ultimate and fatigue loads are highly dependent on system operating conditions. Thus, a reference 2-MW wind turbine system was also developed for the system integrated load calculations. All calculations were performed in accordance with IEC 61400-1 and the KR guidelines for wind turbines.

  • Marine current energy is one of the most interesting renewable and clean energy resources that have been less exploited. Especially, Korea has worldwide outstanding tidal current energy resources and it is highly required to develop tidal in-stream energy conversion system in coastal area. The objective of study is to investigate harnessing techniques of tidal current energy and to design the a 100 kW horizontal axis tidal turbine using blade element momentum theory with Prandtl's tip loss factor for optimal design procedures. In addition, Influence of Prandtl's tip loss factor at local blade positions as a function of tip speed ratio was studied, and the analysed results showed that power coefficient of designed rotor blade using NACA 63812 was 0.49 at rated tip speed ratio.
