This study numerically simulates brake squeal and validates it experimentally by using a lab-scaled brake dynamometer. The system frequencies of the disc brake are traced with respect to the brake pressure by using a modal test and FEM. Then, the squeal frequencies measured from the brake dynamometer are found to correspond to the brake system mode with the dominant displacement of the caliper and pad. Furthermore, a complex eigenvalue analysis conducted using the finite element model confirms that the caliper mode generating the rotational displacement of the pad becomes unstable owing to the negative friction-velocity slope.

To verify the possibility of generating rattling noise from a motor on caliper brake system, a test was conducted using a caliper excited with vibrations similar to that in a vehicle running on actual roads; this test was conducted using a quiet shaker installed in an anechoic room. After several hours of external excitation, the test assembly was loosened, and the frequency of rattling noise generation increased. A microphone was used to record the generated noise. The measured signals were analyzed by conventional spectrum analysis. Since the noise is generated as an impact response, the advantages of employing Prony analysis was discussed, and the results were compared to those obtained using conventional fast Fourier transforms. The accuracy of Prony analysis was through endurance tests on different brake systems.

The air brake system used in heavy vehicle is very important from the point of safety due to its weight. In general, air brake system generates relatively long response time and large loss of pressure. It is known that the response time can be decreased by optimal design of brake system, i.e., by increasing the system pressure, minimizing the air line, and material of components. In this study, We developed experimental rigs for the measurement of braking response of heavy duty trucks and compared with the simulated results obtained from the net work fluid flow system analysis code (FLOWMASTER). The effect of several parameters such as, system pressure, diameter of pipe, chamber temperature on the brake response performance have been examined.

In this study, the pressurization characteristics of the small piezoelectric hydraulic pump for a brake system has been analyzed through modeling the full hydraulic pump components; the pump chamber, check valve, pump load, pump drive controller etc. To analyze the pressurization characteristics, the process of charging pressure in the chamber with stacked-layer piezoelectric actuator were firstly modeled. Secondly, the flow coefficient of the check valve in terms of valve opening has been calculated after computational fluid dynamics analysis, such as the pressure distribution around check valve and the flow rate, was conducted. Also the pump driving controller, which controls the input voltage to the actuator, was designed to make the load pressure follow the input pressure command. The simulation results find that it takes about 0.03ms to reach the operating load pressure required for the braking system. The simulation result was also verified through comparison to the result of the pump performance test.
Rubber hose assembly for automotive hydraulic brake during operation is subject to combined stresses of cyclic pressure, cyclic bending and torsion as well as thermal load. The rubber hose is composed of ethylene-propylene diene monomer(EPDM) rubber layers reinforced by polyvinyl acetate(PVA) braided fabrics. A durability tester with loading rigs for inducing the above cyclic stresses was used to investigate failure mechanisms in the rubber hose assembly. Failure examination was performed at every 100 thousands cycles of bending and torsion. Hose samples were sectioned with a diamond-wheel cutter and then polished. The polished surface was observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Some interfacial delamination with a length of about 1mm along the interface between EPDM rubber and PVA fabrics was shown at the test cycles of 400,000. The delamination induced some cracking into the outer rubber skin layer to leading the final rupture of the hose.

This paper introduces an optimized design for a sensor bracket used to measure the wear amount of an automobile brake pad, based on a dynamic kriging surrogate model. During testing, the temperature of the brake pad can increase beyond 600℃, which often causes sensor malfunction. Therefore, it is essential to optimize the shape of the sensor bracket to minimize heat transfer. To reduce the computational cost of the optimization, the heat-transfer simulation is replaced by a dynamic kriging surrogate model. Dynamic kriging utilizes the best combination of correlation and basis functions and constructs an accurate surrogate model. Following optimization, the temperature of the sensor position decreases by 7.57%. The results from the surrogate model under optimum conditions are verified by a heat-transfer simulation, and the design optimization using a surrogate model is found to be effective.

Nowadays, noise and vibration phenomena of a disc brake system have been given various names that provide some definitions of sound and vibration emitted such as grind, grunt, moan, squeak, squeal, judder and wire brush. The most common and annoying noise of a disc brake system is squeal noise. It is defined as noise whose frequency content is 1 kHz and higher with excessively high and irrigating sound pressure levels. In this paper, the noise and vibration characteristics of a disc brake system have been investigated to develop the fusion-type friction material, which overcomes the low steel and non-asbestos organic friction materials. For the purpose, both experimental evaluation and complex eigenvalue analysis have been carried out.

The present research aims to develop the aluminum disc brake replacing the existing cast iron disc brake. Material such as aluminum using FEM numerical analysis in order to improve the characteristics of each element, we analyze the performance characteristics and braking time you try to change. We try to lay the foundation for the development of an aluminum disc by investigating performance characteristics of the existing cast iron disc brake and comparing them with those of the aluminum disc. This involves FEM dynamics analysis for disc materials and experimental tests using the brake dynamometer. From this study, the results of 7075 aluminum braking performance can be seen that the best.

Cross-drilling on the brake disc is generally known as a way of improving cooling efficiency. In other theories, cross-drilled holes act like a path of gas or water and are also known that they can reduce fading and wetting of brake rotors. However, in disc rotors with cross-drilling, thermal crack phenomena have been reported more frequently and more manufacturing cost should be paid than non cross-drilled disc rotors. In this study, to examine various effects of cross-drilling on the brake disc, two kinds of brake disc rotors, cross-drilled and non cross-drilled, were used in computational fluid dynamic analyses and dynamometer tests.

In this paper, a simulator hardware and control design for an electronic parking brake (EPB) are proposed for emergency vehicle braking when the hydraulic break and anti-lock brake systems (ABS) fail to function. EPB systems are designed specifically for park braking and are usually installed on the rear wheels. However, in an emergency situation when all vehicle brake systems fail, the EPB can be utilized to stop the vehicle and track the target slip ratio as the ABS. This paper analyzed the non-linear EBP of the type of motor on caliper (MoC) based on experiments. A simulator hardware is also designed to validate the performance of the designed EPB controller in terms of braking distance and performance in tracking the target slip ratio. Through the experimental analysis, it is confirmed that a sliding mode controller can be applied on a non-linear EPB to track the target slip ratio.
