  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the size effect on inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. A computer program, named RCAHEST(reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), for the analysis for reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. To determine the size effect on bridge pier inelastic behavior, a 1/4-scale replicate model was also loaded for comparison with the full-scale bridge pier behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete frame subjected to cyclic lateral load and to provide result for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The strength increase of concrete due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been taken into account to model the confined concrete. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. • New results about the crustal structure down to a depth of 60 km beneath North Korea were obtained using the seismic tomography method. About 1013 P- and S-wave travel times from local earthquakes recorded by the Korean stations and the vicinity were used in the research. All earthquakes were relocated on the basis of an algorithm proposed in this study. Parameterization of the velocity structure is realized with a set of nodes distributed in the study volume according to the ray density. 120 nodes located at four depth levels were used to obtain the resulting P- and S-wave velocity structures. As a result, it is found that P- and S-wave velocity anomalies of the Rangnim Massif at depth of 8 km are high and low, respectively, whereas those of the Pyongnam Basin are low up to 24 km. It indicates that the Rangnim Massif contains Archean-early Lower Proterozoic Massif foldings with many faults and fractures which may be saturated with underground water and/or hot springs. On the other hand, the Pyongyang-Sariwon in the Pyongnam Basin is an intraplatform depression which was filled with sediments for the motion of the Upper Proterozoic, Silurian and Upper Paleozoic, and Lower Mesozoic origin. In particular, the high P- and S-wave velocity anomalies are observed at depth of 8, 16, and 24 km beneath Mt. Backdu, indicating that they may be the shallow conduits of the solidified magma bodies, while the low P-and S-wave velocity anomalies at depth of 38 km must be related with the magma chamber of low velocity bodies with partial melting. We also found the Moho discontinuities beneath the Origin Basin including Sari won to be about 55 km deep, whereas those of Mt. Backdu is found to be about 38 km. The high ratio of P-wave velocity/S-wave velocity at Moho suggests that there must be a partial melting body near the boundary of the crust and mantle. Consequently we may well consider Mt. Backdu as a dormant volcano which is holding the intermediate magma chamber near the Moho discontinuity. This study also brought interesting and important findings that there exist some materials with very high P- and S-wave velocity annomoalies at depth of about 40 km near Mt. Myohyang area at the edge of the Rangnim Massif shield.

  • This is a study on application of a TVD-Mccormack scheme for the computation of one-dimensional dam-break flows. The TVD scheme not only has the ability to damp out oscillations, but also does not contain terms with adjustable parameters. Moreover, the TVD-McCormack scheme does not cause any additional difficulty when dealing with the source term of the equation and retains second-order accuracy in both space and time. In this study, by appropriately designing the limiter functions, the TVD property can be achieved, and numerical oscillations near a jump discontinuities can be eliminated or reduced. Also, this numerical scheme has less computational errors when the direction of the predictor-corrector step is in the same direction as the shock wane propagation.

  • This paper presents a supercompact multi-wavelet scheme and its application to fluid simulation data. The supercompact wavelet method is an appropriate wavelet for fluid simulation data in the sense that it can provide compact support and avoid unnecessary interaction with remotely located data (e.g. across a shock discontinuity or vortices). thresholding for data compression is applied based on a covariance vector structure of multi-wavelets. The extension of this scheme to three dimensions is analyzed. The numerical tests demonstrate that it can allow various analytic advantages as well as large data compression ratios in actual practice.

  • Existing area-based stereo algorithms rely heavily on rectangular windows for computing correspondence. While the algorithms with the rectangular windows are efficient, they generate relatively large matching errors due to variations of disparity profiles near depth discontinuities and doesnt take into account local deformations of the windows due to projective distortion. In this paper, in order to deal with these problems, a new correlation function with 4 directional line masks, based on robust estimator, is proposed for the selection of potential matching points. These points is selected to consider depth discontinuities and reduce effects on outliers. The proposed matching method finds an arbitrarily-shaped variable window around a pixel in the 3d array which is constructed with the selected matching points. In addition, the method take into account the local deformation of the variable window with a constant disparity, and perform the estimation of sub-pixel disparities. Experiments with various synthetic images show that the proposed technique significantly reduces matching errors both in the vicinity of depth discontinuities and in continuously smooth areas, and also does not be affected drastically due to outlier and noise.

  • A total of 22 sites around openings of limestone mine are chosen to assess rock mass classification schemes such as RMR, Q-system, and GSI. RMR and Q are modified to estimate the relationship with GSI. Q' is the modified Q with SRF=1.0 and $J_w=1.0$. Rock mass is assumed to be completely dry and very favorable discontinuity orientations are assumed to estimate ${RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$. Relationships of Q-Basic RMR, Q-Total RMR, ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$, and GSI-Q' are analyzed, in which a correlation of ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$ is found to be the highest. Failure strains are calculated using the modulus ratios and most measuring sites appear to be stable with low failure strain class.

  • This paper presents an implicit moving least squares(MLS) difference method for improving the solution accuracy of 1-D free boundary problems, which implicitly updates the topology change of moving interface. The conventional MLS difference method explicitly updates the moving interface; it requires no iterative solution procedure but results in the loss of accuracy. However, the newly developed implicit scheme makes the total system nonlinear involving iterative solution procedure, but numerical verification show that it dramatically elevates the solution accuracy with moderate computation increase. Through numerical experiments for melting problems having moving singularity, it is verified that the proposed method can achieve the second order accuracy.
