In the child, it is very important that he/she will have the ability to suppress aesthetic restorative materials of secondary caries. With the representative preventive material against caries, the importance of fluoride is more emphasized. This study examined the differences in fluoride release and re-uptake among some restorative materials, following a treatment of APF gel and fluoride varnish. The surface roughness was observed under scanning electron microscope. Studying this will provide for the research to find effective restorative materials and fluoride type in tooth caries prevention. It is applied from presence at a clinic that restorative materials are resin, flowable resin, compomer and glass ionomer. Fluoride release was measured at 24-hour intervals for 7 days, 3-day intervals from 8th to 38th day using an ion-selective electrode and analyzer. Then, the materials were treated with the fluoride gel and fluoride varnish respectively, fluoride release was measured and specimens were evaluated under scanning electron microscope for 4 weeks. It was concluded that 1. Fluoride was released for 38 days from restorative materials under 1 ppm in case of flowable resin, 1-2 ppm in compomer and 2-8 ppm in glass ionomer, a few of fluoride was released after 45 days 2. Fluoride has more releasing after application of APF gel than fluoride varnish. Fluoride re-uptake was observed under 0.6-0.2 ppm in fluoride varnish and 0.6-2.6 ppm in APF gel after starting the procedure one day(p<0.05). For the remaining 4 weeks, they demonstrated a similar release. 3. Specimens were evaluated under scanning electron microscope. Applied fluoride in the experimental group surface was rougher than the control group that did not receive fluoride application. Fluoride varnish group had a smoother surface than both the APF gel group and the varnish APF gel group that received a fluoride application.

The typical treatment method for fluoride polluted water is the flocculation and precipitation method which usually is capable of reducing the fluoride concentration down to the level of about 10 ppm. However, this method is no longer effective for the treatment of contaminated water having less than 10 ppm of fluorides. To remove fluorides in polluted water from the fluoride concentration between 1 to 10 ppm, several adsorbents were prepared mainly based on an activated alumina and the fluoride removal efficiencies of the adsorbents were analyzed. The best fluoride removal efficiency was obtained when the activated alumina treated by sulfuric acid was used as the adsorbent. A proper calcination temperature for the sulfuric acid contained activated alumina was found to be about $500^{\circ}C$. An adsorption isotherm for the adsorbent was also obtained by using Freundlich model. The values of the constants in Freundlich isotherm model were calculated to be K=6.63 and 1/n=0.29 based on the results obtained from the series of batch type adsorption experiments.
The purpose of this study was to observe the influences of the water fluoride concentration on the growth changes, the histologic characteristics of osteoblast in the tibia of growing newborn rats by using electron microscopy and on the composition changes of bone matrix in those by using energy dispersive x-ray system (EDX). The water fluoride concentration was respectively 0 ppm (contrast group), 100 ppm (100 ppm group), 200 ppm (200 ppm group) and 300 ppm (300 ppm group). The results of the investigation by using electron microscopy were as followed. In contrast group, the traditional cuboidal osteoblasts were observed. In 100 ppm group, several reversal line, the newly formed osteoid by the strongly activated osteoblast and the well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria in cytoplasm of osteoblast were observed. Also, many secretory vesicle around cell membrane were observed and some fused with cell membrane released secretory granule out of cell. In 200 ppm group, the depressed osteoblasts were observed, mitochondria in cytoplasm were expanded and cristae shape in mitochondria were destroyed. Also, the ribosome at the surface of rough endoplasmic reticulum were not observed. In 300 ppm group, the adjacent osteoblasts with endosteum were irregularly arranged, the cell membrane were destroyed and organelles were flowed out of cell. On the other hand, the results of the investigation by using energy dispersive x-ray system were as followed. P and Ca concentrations in 100 ppm group were increased more than those in contrast group. But, in 200 and 300 ppm group were not increased more than those in 100 ppm group. Therefore, the activities of the osteoblasts were increased, the bone matrix were actively synthesized by the supplied water fluoride. But, the osteoblasts were destroyed, inhibited by the higher water fluoride concentration.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the solubility and the amount of fluoride release when a resin surface coating agent is applied to RMGIC. Materials and Methods: To measure the fluoride release and solubility, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$and $Filtek^{TM}$ Z350XT without a surface coating, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ with G coat $plus^{TM}$ and Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ with $Permaseal^{(R)}$ were prepared. And the amount of fluoride release and solubility were measured. Results: There was no significant difference in the daily fluoride release between the surface coating agents. The cumulative fluoride release was significantly different between the groups using RMGIC at 56 days (P < 0.05). In the solubility measurement, RMGIC without surface coating was significantly different only on the 7th day compared to the other three groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Surface coating agents can prevent the degradation of properties by the initial solvent in RMGIC. Therefore, fluoride is preserved inside the restorative material and the effect of surface coating after the addition is reduced, so that the effect on fluoride release and storage is also reduced.

This study evaluated the fluoride release of alkasite restorative material (ARM) and giomer penetrating the dentin adhesive layer. Twenty specimens were prepared for each restorative material, and dentin adhesive with uniform thickness was applied to half of them. The prepared specimens were placed in a polyethylene tube containing 2.0 mL of deionized water and deposited in a 37.0℃ water bath for the study duration. The amount of fluoride release was measured on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days after deposition. The dentin adhesive applied to the ARM and giomer could not completely block the fluoride release; however, it significantly reduced its amount. The cumulative amount of fluoride release of the ARM after 28 days was higher than that of the giomer regardless of the application of dentin adhesive.

In this study, sorption characteristics of thermally treated activated alumina (AA) for fluoride were investigated. Sorption experiments have been conducted in equilibrium and kinetic batch conditions. Also, effects of solution pH and anions on fluoride removal have been observed. The properties of thermally treated ( $700^{\circ}C$) activated alumina (AA700) and untreated activated alumina (UAA) were compared using field-emission scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. From the experiments using AA thermally treated at different temperatures (100, 300, 500, $700^{\circ}C$), it was found that at high fluoride concentrations (50, 100, 200 mg/L) the sorption capacity of thermally treated AA increased with increasing thermal treatment temperature. At an initial fluoride concentration of 200 mg/L, the sorption capacity of AA700 was 3.67 times greater than that of UAA. The BET analysis showed that the specific surface area of UAA was about 2 times larger than that of AA700. The XRD analysis indicated that UAA was composed of both boehmite (AlOOH) and bayerite ($Al(OH)_3$) while AA700 was $Al_2O_3$. The reason that fluoride sorption capacity of AA700 increased despite of decrease in specific surface area compared to UAA could be attributed to the change of crystal structure. The kinetic sorption test showed that fluoride sorption to AA700 arrived at equilibrium after 24 h. The equilibrium test demonstrated that the maximum sorption capacity of AA700 was 5.70 mg/g. Additional batch experiments indicated that fluoride sorption to AA700 was the highest at pH 7, decreasing at both acidic and basic solution pHs. Also, fluoride sorption to AA700 decreased in the presence of anions such as phosphate, nitrate, and carbonate. This study demonstrated that thermal treatment of AA at high temperature could increase its sorption capacity for fluoride.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant was more effective in preventing caries than conventional non-fluoride-releasing sealant. Specimens 8mm in diameter were made from sound bovine enamel. Fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant(Helioseal F, Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and non-fluoride-releasing sealant(Helioseal, Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) were applied to the specimens and artificial caries was induced. Microhardness and the depth of the carious lesion was measured. The following results were obtained: 1. In group 2, sealed with fluoride-releasing sealant, there was a 58.4% decrease in microhardness. This was significantly less than the 84.4% decrease observed in group 1, sealed with non-fluoride-releasing sealant(p<0.01). 2. The average depth of the artificial carious lesion in group 2 was $30.1{\pm}9.8{\mu}m$. In group 1, sealed with non-fluoride-releasing sealant, the lesion was significantly deeper with an average depth of $58.5{\pm}4.9{\mu}m$(p<0.01). 3. Fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant was more anticariogenic compared to non-fluoride-releasing sealant.

The purpose of this study was to examine an effect of fluoride recharging on fluoride release and surface change of fluoride-releasing restorative materials. Six commercially available fluoride releasing restorative materials (Fuji II LC Improved: FL, Compoglass F: CF, Dyract AP: DA, F2000: FT, Gradia Direct: GD, and Tetric Ceram: TC) were selected as experimental materials. Disk specimens were fabricated with split teflon mold to the final dimensions of 15 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. Ten samples of each material were fabricated and stored in deionized water at $37^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 3 months. Before fluoride recharging, all specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 emery papers. Fluoride recharging was done at 5-day interval using 2.0% NaF gel. The release of fluoride into the storage water was monitored using a fluoride ion electrode. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple range test. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Fluoride recharge capability were FL > CF > DA and TC group after 12 times exposure to 2.0% NaF gel (P<0.05). 2. All the experimental materials, except for FT group, showed the increase of fluoride release and surface roughness. 3. Fluoride-releasing rates returned to base line within 3 days.

The purpose of this study is to make porous oxide film on the surfaces of pure Ti through anodic spark discharge in electrolytic solution containing calcium and phosphate ions, to improve osseointergration by treating fluoride agent. In addition, it is to evaluate the fluoride modified effect on the surface. Commercial pure Ti plate with $20{\times}10{\times}2mm$ and Ti wire with a diameter of 1.5mm and a total length of 15mm were used. After making titanium oxide films converted by anodic spark discharge, anodizing was performed. Fluoride was spreaded to titanium laboratory plate and maintained for 30 minutes after anodizing breakdown. Fluoride ion discharge amount was measured per 24 hours after dipping titanium plate into saline (10ml) and sustaining 90rpm in a pyrostat. Some plates and wires were dipped in Hanks solutions for a month to examine biocompatibility using SEM and XRD. $TiO_2$ film formed by anodic discharge technique showed great roughness and uniform pores which were $1{\sim}3{\mu}m$ in a diameter. Roughness of the films treated with anodic discharge after blasting were higher than the turned ones(P<0.05). Rapid surface activity was observed in the samples treated with $TiF_3$ agent, which immersed in Hanks solution for 30 days. Taking the results into consideration, the fluoride modified implant with anodic discharge demonstrates that it makes uniformly porous oxide film on the surface of implant and properly increase roughness for osseointegration. The implants will achieve greater bone integration after short healing time by improving surface activity.
