  • The spray and breakup characteristics of swirling liquid sheet were investigated by measuring the spray angle and breakup length as the axial Weber number Wel was increased up to 1554 and the ambient gas pressure up to 4.0MPa. As Wel and ambient gas density increased, the disturbances on the annular liquid sheet surface were amplified by the increase of the aerodynamic forces, and thus the liquid sheet disintegrated near from the injector exit. The measured spray angles according to the ambient gas density were different before and after the sheet breaks. Before the liquid sheet breaks, the spray angle was almost constant, but once the liquid sheet started to breakup, the spray angle decreased. And the breakup length decreased because of the increase of the aerodynamic force as the ambient gas density and Wel increased. Lastly, the measured breakup length according to the ambient gas density and Wel was compared with the result by the linear instability theory. We found that the corrected linear instability theory considering the attenuation of sheet thickness agrees well with our experimental results.

  • High-pressure flows are ubiquitous in many industrial fields. A representative application is fuel injection using a common-rail control system in diesel engines, where the injection pressure in the injector exceeds 1000 bar. In high-speed injection, the fluid injected through the nozzle undergoes breakup owing to the interaction with the ambient gas. The breakup process influences mixture formation, which in turn influences combustion in diesel engines. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the breakup process of fuel spray. The Reitz and Diwakar model and cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model were used in this study as sub-models for the numerical analysis of the breakup process of fuel spray. This study aims to precisely analyze the breakup process of spray and to investigate the breakup frequency of the injected fuel. Consequently, it proposes a suitable sub-model for analyzing the breakup process of a diesel spray by using CFX, a commercial CFD program.

  • Pseudo-3D spatial distribution of spray droplets is investigated by using Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) in order to examine the disintegration and spreading behavior of spray exiting from liquid-propellant thruster injector. Spray injected from nozzle orifice with length-to-diameter ratio ($L/d_o$) of 1.67 and under the injection pressure of 27.6 bar is aligned to the vertical. Vertical and horizontal mean velocities of droplets, Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), and volumetric flux decrease as droplets travel from center/upstream toward outer region/downstream of spray. Although the distribution of spray characteristic parameters is symmetric against the geometric axis of nozzle orifice, their absolute values are asymmetric.

  • In the present work, the breakup mechanism of highly viscous epoxy paints discharged from a fan spray nozzle was examined experimentally. The paints tested were non-Newtonian fluids, composed of epoxy resin, solid particles and other additives. The paint spray discharged from the nozzle was visualized and recorded using a digital camera with back illumination. Due to presence of the solid particles, perforation of liquid sheet was observed in most cases, even at low-Reynolds number conditions (Re < 15,000) where the aerodynamic-wave breakup mode is used to be dominant for pure liquids. However, with the increase of the particle concentration, the sheet became longer and the thickness at breakup became thinner to some extent. This is because, with higher concentration of solid particles, the stabilizing effect by the viscosity increase predominates over the destabilizing effect by perforation.

  • The spray characteristics and liquid column penetration of steady and pulsed injection measurements have been experimentally studied using high speed camera in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. The objectives of this research are to comparison the spray characteristics of steady injection with pulsed injection. Moreover. the effects of frequency are also studied. As the result, This research has been showed that pulsed injection has different penetration compared with steady injection.

  • The liquid column trajectory and column breakup length characteristics have been experimentally studied in angled jets injected into subsonic crossflow. Pulsed shadowgraph photography and Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence measurements were used to determine the angled effects. And the main objectives of this research are to get a empirical formula of liquid column trajectory and breakup length with below the $90^{\circ}$ degree injection angle conditions, and were compared with previous results. It was also found that the empirical formula, which reversed injection conditions of air stream. As the result, This has been shown that liquid column trajectories and column breakup length were spatially dependent on various injection angle, normalized injector exit diameter, air-stream and fuel injection velocity. Furthermore, the empirical formula of liquid column trajectories and breakup length has been some different of drag coefficient results between normal angled injection and reversed injection in subsonic crossflow.

  • This paper presents disintegration process of the small rotational fuel injector. In order to understand disintegration precess, we measured droplet diameter, velocity and spray distribution by the PDPA(Phasse Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag flash photography. From the test results, the liquid column emerging from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Furthermore, droplet diameter(SMD) and spray distribution were strongly influenced by the diameter of the injection orifice.
