Orius strigicollis Poppies is an indigenous natural enemy of thrips pests in Korea To develop an efficient mass rearing system for Ο. strigicollis, effects of hatchability, egg numbers and egg harvesting time of Ο. strigicollis were measured in cylindrical cage (251 ㎤) under the conditions of photoperiod 16L : 8D, $55\pm$10% RH and $25\pm$$2^{\circ}C$. The hatchability and developmental period of eggs were 88.5% and 5.7 days, respectively. The highest emergence rate (50.8%) was achieved when the number of eggs laid was ranged from 50 to 100 per arena. The proper harvesting time of newly produced adults was 17 days postoviposition. Relationship between the number of resulting adults per female and the number of female adults per arena was Y : -10.7971n (X) +44.659 ($R^2$=0.7619). The generation time (T), the net reproductive rate ($R_{0}$ ) and the intrinsic rate of natural increase ($r_{m}$ ) were 26.5 days, 6.18 and 0.0687, respectively.
The embryonic and larval development of Chelon lauvergnii (Eydoux & Souleyet) was surveyed by incubating artificially inseminated eggs with parent fishes obtained at Kang-wha island in the mid-western coastal area of Korea on June, 1997. The fertilized eggs were transparent, spherical in shape, measuring 0.95~1.08 mm in diameter, having a large oil globule, and their perivitelline space narrow, and began to hatch at 40 hrs. in water temperature $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were 2.35~2.68 mm in total length with 23 myomeres, anus opened, mouth closed, preanal length 58.7~61.6% of total length, oil globule located in posterior end of yolk sac. Melanophores, branch in shape, were distributed mainly along the ventro-lateral region of trunk part and a few on the anterior end of caudal part and surface of oil globule. The larvae measuring 3.08~3.36 mm in total length absorbed yolk material completely in 3 days after hatching, in which air bladder began to appear and mouth opened. In 8 days after hatching, the larva was measured 5.09 mm in total length, its posterior end of notochord began to flex upward and the caudal fin rays differentiated as 7, finfold of the second dorsal and anal fins appeared. In this time, melanophores, branch in shape, were concentrated in the anterior half region of the caudal part and a few also distributed on the top of head, snout region, ventral margin of lower jaw and isthmus region. In 12 days after hatching, the larva measuring 8.48 mm in total length completed all the fins (D. IV-9; P1. 16; P2. I, 5; A. II, 9) and reached to the juvenile stage. Melanophores, in this time, were distributed on the mid-lateral region of the caudal part in enlargment than before and a few also found in the dorso-lateral region of the trunk part, and in the cheek region.
Changes in the chicken testis from hatching to adulthood were studied in Korean native chickens of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32, 44, 52 and 64 weeks (n=13 chickens per group) of age. The present study was to investigate in more detail the post-hatching development of testis in Korean native chickens. Testes of chickens were fixed by whole body perfusion using a fixative containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde in cacodylate buffer, processed and embedded in Epon-araldite. Using $1{\mu}m$ sections stained with methylene blue-azure II, qualitative and quantitative(stereological) morphological studies were performed. Sperm production was measured by routine technique. The average volume of a testis of 1 week old Korean native chickens was determined as 0.015 g and the parameter increased linearly from 1 week to 21 weeks days (28.9 g), and did not change from 21 weeks to 64 weeks. The volume density of the seminiferous tubules increased with age from 32.6% at week 1 to 92.89% at week 64. The volume density of the interstitium represents 67.4% of the testicular parenchyma at week 1. This proportion progressively diminished during development to reach a value of 7.11% at week 64. Total sperm production per testis increased significantly from 18 weeks to 28 weeks and remained unchanged. Sperm production per 1 g testis increased significantly from 18 weeks to 28 weeks, did not change significantly from 28 weeks to 52 weeks, and declined significantly at 64 weeks of age. The average diameter of the seminiferous tubules gradually increased with age from 1 week $(42.4{\mu}m)$ to 21 weeks $(412.8{\mu}m)$. The length of the seminiferous tubules was 0.34 m at 1 week, increased significantly in subsequent age groups and reached 72.2 m by weeks 64. The stage of germ cell development in seminiferous tubules was classified as 1) spermatogonia $(1\sim8\;weeks)$, 2) spermatogonia and spermatocytes $(10\sim12\;weeks)$, 3) spermatogonia, spermatocytes and round spermatids $(14\sim16\;weeks)$, and 4) speramatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa $(18\sim64\;weeks)$. These results clarified the pattern of changes in the testicular development in Korean native chickens from hatching to adulthood as 1) neonatal-prepubertal $(1\sim12\;weeks)$, 2) puberty$(14\sim18\;weeks)$, and adult$(21\sim64\;weeks)$.
Spawning, hatching, survival and cannibalism of the octopus, Octopus ocellatus, were investigated at the indoor laboratory. The specimens were collected in the coastal waters of Puan, Korea, from March 2000 to May 2001. Changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) during March to May, 2000 were similar to those in 2001. The GSI began to increase in March and reached the maximum in May 2000 and 2001. The mean fecundity of adult individuals in April was larger than those in March and May in 2000 and 2001. In the investigations of survival rates of adults according to the water layers, the mean survival rate in the middle water layer was higher than that in the bottom layer in year 2000 (p = 0.002). The survival rate during 2001 was similar to the result of year 2000 in the water layers (p = 0.018). From the investigations with the purchase dates, the survival (88.8%) in the early spawning period (April 10, 2000) showed larger than those in the mid-spawning (May 11, 2000) and the late spawning (May 23, 2000). For aquaculture, it is suggested that the purchase timing of adults in the early spawning period will have a better result than that of the other spawning periods. In the amount of spawning with water layers, the number of eggs spawned of the adults in the middle layer were larger than those in the bottom layer. In the number of eggs spawned with the purchase dates, the number of eggs spawned in the early spawning period were larger than those in the middle and late spawning periods. The size of eggs spawned were 6.904$\times$2.520 mm. the hatching period required (from spawning to hatched larvae) was 55 days (April 17 to June 7,2000) at water temperatures of 11.2 to 21.1$^{\circ}C$. In case of the hatching rates with water layers, the hatching rate in the middle water layer was larger than that in the bottom one (p = 0.004).
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of incubation methods and transfer timings on the hatching rate of fertilized eggs of the river puffer Takifugu obscurus. Four incubation methods were tested, a) control (fertilized eggs attached to the glass plate), b) bottom (fertilized eggs spread on the bottom of the tank without any treatment), c) S-bottom (removing the stickiness of the fertilized eggs, and then spreading the eggs on the bottom of the tank), and d) incubator (removing the stickiness of the fertilized eggs, and then incubating the eggs in an incubator). Additionally, four transfer timings were tested: a) control (no transfer from the incubation tank), b) zygote (fertilized eggs transferred at the zygote stage), c) segmentation (fertilized eggs transferred at the segmentation stage), and d) pharygula (fertilized eggs transferred at the pharygula state). The results showed that the hatching rate of incubator was significantly higher than those of control, bottom, and glass (P<0.05). The results also showed that the hatching rates of control and pharygula were significantly higher than those of zygote and segmentation (P<0.05).

From November 1996 to April 1997, the rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier et Valenciennes) was reared in laboratory, and observed eggs development and morphology of larvae. The eggs of this species are demersal and adhesive, and their diameter were varied within 0.76 to 0.82 mm. The color of yolk is light yellow in early developmental stage, and then turned to orange before hatching out. The yolk contained numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 33 hours and 30 minutes after insemination at $10.0{\sim}14.5^{\circ}C$ of waters. The newly hatched larvae were elongated in shape and 1.62~1.68 mm in total length (TL) with 7~8+16=23~24 myomeres. The larvae absorbed yolk material and oil globule completely in 14 days after hatching and became postlarvae. The spawning season of adult rockfish may be supposed to be from February to March in the southern sea of Korea.
This study is mainly focused on the mating of 9 couples of Eagle Owl Bubo bubo habitating in Paju, Ganghwa Island, Icheon, Sihwa Lake, Chungju. For this study, from 2005 to 2007, regular filming and mornitoring for the breeding ecology and copulation behavior of 9 couples of Eagle Owl in the nest and near area had been done. Clutches ranged in size from one to four eggs but averaged 2.27 eggs(n=15), hatching success rate was 71 %(n=34) and fledgling success rate was 83%(n=23). Through the filming and mornitoring, it was found that Eagle Owl continued to copulate each other even after hatching and kept its copulation until the chicks left their nest($7\sim8$ weeks after hatching). This copulation behaviour without fertilization seems to be done for confirming, maintaining and strengthening of pair-bond by the necessity of both male and female, and to aim at stable breeding of their chicks.
Age, hatching date and growth in length of juvenile Limanda yokohamae were determined by analysis of microstructure in otoliths. Monthly samples were collected by a beach seine in the shallow water off Gaduk-do from January to December, 1998. The juveniles were collected between February and April. Mean total length was $22.6{\pm}1.77\;mm$ ($\pm$SD) in February, $23.6{\pm}3.86\;mm$ in March, and $38.2{\pm}8.38\;mm$ in April. The core of otoliths ranged from 18 to $21\;{\mu}m$ in diameter and the growth increments were deposited concentrically from the hatching mark. The secondary growth layer began to appear at the 48 to 56-th increment. It indicates that L. yokohamae larvae may be completed the metamorphosis at this time of ca. 52 d after hatching, and moved into the shallow water for demersal stage. The hatching date calculated from the number of daily increments was between late November and early January, showing a peak in December. The total length (L, mm) was related to otolith radius (R, ${\mu}m$); L=0.055 R+5.81 ($r^2=0.88$). The growth in total length was represented by the Gompertz growth curve; $L_t=3.39e^{4.51(1-e^{-0.0067t})}$ ($r^2=0.81$). Daily growth rate was 0.35 mm/d at the age of 70 d and increased up to 0.55 mm/d at the age of 120 d.
The purpose of this study is to find out geochemical characteristics of stream sediments which are good indicator of geochemical hazard valuation and water in primary channels of the Jangheung area. We separated three groups which were granitoid area, granite gneiss area and tuffeous area by petrological properties. Physical and chemical characteristics of stream water such as temperature, pH, and EC were measured in the field between 1999 and 2001 and stream sediments samples were collected from April to May in 1999. For the chemical analysis of stream sediments samples, XRF, ICP-AES and NAA were used. The contents of the major elements had a similar contents in three groups and those of rare earth elements in granite gneiss area were lower value than those of other two groups. Zn and Cu were higher value than the other toxic elements. Through the enrichment factor and enrichment index features of the elements, we knew that $Fe_2O_3$, MgO, $TiO_2$, MnO and Eu, Yb of the tuffeous area samples and Co, Cr, Zn were enriched.
Hatching date and early growth of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus were estimated by examination of otolith microstructure of Pacific cod juveniles collected in Jinhae Bay of Korea from May to June, 2008. Water temperature during the main spawning time ranged from 7 to $9^{\circ}C$ according to the geographic distribution of temperature measured from November to May between 2006 and 2009. The spawners were collected from December to February between 2006 and 2008, and the gonadosomatic index of spawners was larger in females than in males, showing a peak in January. Total length of juveniles ranged from 37.5 to 94.9 mm ($63.2{\pm}11.0mm$; mean${\pm}$SD). The number of daily growth increments in juvenile otoliths were on average $102{\pm}15$ in May 17 samples, $119{\pm}16$ in May 29 ones and $116{\pm}18$ in June 3 ones. Hatching dates estimated from the number of daily growth increments ranged from late December to mid-March, showing the peak between late January and mid-February. Daily growth in total length (TL, mm) can be adjusted to the Gompertz curve: $TL_t=123.2{\exp}\{-{\exp}[-0.0165(t-81.8)]\}$ ($r^2$=0.93, n=273).
