  • In the w/o concentrated emulsion, the volume fraction of the dispersed is greater than 0.74 and the hydrophilic liquid is dispersed in the hydrophobic liquid of the continuous phase. The emulsion has the same appearance and behaviour as a gel. The polarity of the hydrophilic liquids and hydrophobic liquids, the pH and the ionic strength of the hydrophilic liquid are found to be important factors in the stability at the polymerization temperature such as $50^{\circ}C$. The lower the polarity of the hydrophobic liquid and the higher the polarity of the hydrophilic liquid, the more stable the emulsion. Electron microscopy studies of the hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show that the particles of polyacrylamide, the dispersed phase, are separated by he network of the thin film of polystyrene, the continuous phase. This hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show higher permselectivity to water in the mixture of water-ethanol. The pervaporation experiment shows that the selectivity of the membrane ranges between 4-40 and increases with increasing enthanol concentration in the feed. The rate of permeation decreases with increasing ethanol concentration in the feed.

  • This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.

  • HCl concentration, reaction temperature, and $Ti^{4+}$ concentration are the decisive factors in determining the structure of precipitates in the process of synthesis of $TiO_2$ particles from aqueous $TiCl_4$ solution by precipitation and the volumetric proportion of brookite phase in $TiO_2$ particles can be controlled by these factors. Pure brookite-type $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized by heating the aqueous $TiCl_4$ solution with no more than 1.0 M of $Ti^{4+}$, in which the concentration of HCl was kept in the range of about 2.53~6.41 M during reaction, at the temperature below $70^{\circ}C$ for 20 h. Also, Pure brookite was finally transformed to a rutile phase via an anatase phase through heat-treatment.

  • Self-reinforced silicon carbide was prepared by hot pressing and the control of starting phases of raw materials and its microstructural characteristics was investigated. The specimens with self-reinforced microstructure were obtained from the compacts with mixed compositions of ${\alpha}$-and ${\beta}$-SiC powders. Self-reinforced microstructure which is composed of large dispersed grains with rod-like shape and matrix with small equiaxed grains was formed by the transformation to the ${\alpha}$-SiC with 4H polytype for ${\beta}$-SiC and anisotropic grain growth during the heat treatment. Of all speimens the values of volume fraction maximum length and aspect ratio for large grains with rode-like types were the highest at the specimen with 50 vol% ${\beta}$-SiC in the starting SiC powder and therefore this specimen showed the highest fracture toughness due to the crack deflection by rod-like grains during crack propagation.

  • The formation of adiabatic shearband in tungsten heavy alloys(WHA) was studied in this investigation. Five prismatic specimens were loaded by high velocity impacts and treated as plane strain problems. To find out the effect of particle's volume ratio, specimens containing 81%, 93% and 97% volume percents of tungsten particles were used. Also the effects of particle's geometry and size on the formation of shearband were studied for 81% volume percent alloys by small size particle model, large size particle model and undulated particle models, and the results were discussed.be used to diagnose the causes of necking and fracture in industrial practice and to investigate whether these defects were caused by material property variation, changes in lubrication, or incorrect press settings. In non-axisymmetric deep drawing, three modes of forming regimes are found: draw, stretch, plane strain. The stretch mode for non-axisymmetric deep drawing could be defined when the major and minor strains are positive. The draw mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is negative, and plane strain mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is zero. Through experiments the draw mode was shown on the wall and flange are one of a drawn cup, while the plane strain and the stretch mode were on the punch head and the punch corner area respectively, We observed that the punch load of elliptical deep drawing was decreased according to increase of die corner radius and the thickness deformation of minor side was more large than major side.

  • Resin transfer molding(RTM) as a composite manufacturing process is currently of great interest in the aerospace industry requiring high performance composite parts. In this study, an analysis of mold filling in the RTM process was carried out by numerical simulation using finite element/control volume technique. Experimental work for the visualization of resin flow through fibrous preform was also conducted in order to quantitatively measure the permeabilities of the fiber mats and to evaluate the validity of the developed numerical code. The different types of fiber mats and silicon oils were selected as reinforcements and resin materials, respectively. The effects of fibrous preform structure, mold geometry, and preplaced insert on the flow front patterns during mold filling were examined by integrating the model predictions and experimental results. The flow fronts predicted by numerical simulation were in good agreement with those observed experimentally. However, according to the regions of the mold, some deviations between predicted and observed flow fronts could be found because of non-uniform fiber volume fraction. Weldline locations for the resin flow through round insert preplaced in the mold could be qualitatively deduced based on predicted flow fronts.

  • In this paper, the variation of mechanical properties of T800 carbon/epoxy composites according to the forming pressure, which was referred to previous studies on a filament winding process, were investigated. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave de-gassing molding process controlling forming pressure (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa, 0.7MPa including vacuum) and water jet cutting after fabricating composite laminates. Various tensile tests were performed for in-plane properties and interlaminar properties were also measured by using Iosipescu test jig. Fiber volume fraction was measured to correlate the property variation and the forming pressure. This properties are expected to be utilized in the design of Type III pressure vessel for hydrogen vehicles which uses the same carbon fiber (T800 carbon fiber) for the filament winding process.

  • Pervaporation experiments of isopropanol-water mixtures through a polydimethytsiloxane(PDMS) membrane were carried out at 35$^{\circ}$C and the effect of isopropanol concentration on the separation characteristics was investigated. The total permeation rate showed the largest deviation from the ideal permeation rate at the isoprpanol volume fraction from 0.5 to 0.7, which resulted from the interaction effect between permeants. The plasticizing effect of isopropanol enhanced the permeation of water, while the existance of water resulted in the depression of isopropanol permeation. Both the permeation rate and the selectivity were predicted using Flory-Huggins thermodynamics and modified Maxwell-Stefan equation. The concentration-dependent diffusion coefficients were expressed by Vignes equation. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between isopropanol and water was calculated using excess Gibbs energy correlation and the interaction parameters between liquid and polymer membrane were determined by equilibrium swelling experiments. The predicted permeation rates were in accord with the experimental ones within maximum error range of 35 %. The predicted permeation selectivities were in good agreement with the experimental values.

  • $TiO_2$ powders with rutile and brookite phases were synthesized through homogeneous precipitation of the aqueous $TiOCl_2$ solution, prepared from $TiCl_4$ and HCl solution, and their properties were characterized. Based on the analytical results appropriate molar ratios of ${Cl^-}_{total}:Ti^{+4}$ in precipitating solution for synthesis of pure rutile phase and a mixture of rutile and brookite phases were proposed. The volumetric proportion of brookite increased with increasing HCl concentration under a typical condition obtaining mixed phase of rutile and brookite. The brookite phase in the mixture was transformed to anatase phase by heat treatment at about $800^{\circ}C{\sim}850^{\circ}C$, and finally converted to rutile phase at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presents the one-dimensional model of a hydrogen generator, where the alkali solution was supplied from the top to the dry aluminum powders. Hydrogen was produced as the solution moved downward and reacted with aluminum. The species conservation equations were considered for the hydrogen gas and alkali solution, while the energy conservation equation was applied to the gas-liquid-solid mixture as a single medium. The gas rising velocity and liquid penetration velocity were also included in the theoretical approach. The developed code was validated with the experimental data of the hydrogen production amount and collector pressure. Additionally, the model successfully predicted the various reactor properties, such as the concentrations, volume fractions, and temperatures, and is expected to help significantly in the design of a novel hydrogen generator.
