  • This study examined the effects of emotional content on the encoding process of emotional stimuli and the effects of emotional context on those of neutral stimuli. It was examined whether the superior memory of emotional stimuli is due to attentional resource allocation. This study were performed an emotional picture and a neutral word were presented in succession at every trials. The results of recognition judgement showed superior memory of emotional pictures than neutral pictures, but showed poorer memory of neutral words in emotional context than those in neutral context. LPC(Late Positive Complex) of ERP results showed the similar pattern: higher amplitude by emotional pictures than neutral pictures, and lower amplitude by neutral words in emotional context than those in neutral context. This result is considered to support attention allocation hypothesis.

  • This study was conducted to explore whether an automatic evaluation effect (i.e.,congruency effect and positive priming effect) of emotional properties which have been found in the racial prejudice study can be applied to the gender properties. Experiment 1 employing a short SOA (150ms-250ms) naming task showed a priming effect was larger in the positive prime-positive target condition than negative prime-negative target condition but not congruent effect. Experiment 2 employing a long SOA (500ms-1000ms) naming task didn't yield either positive priming effect or congruency effect. The congruency effect and the positive priming effect which is ubiquitous phenomenon in the generic cognitive concepts network were not found in the gender properties. Therefore, it was suggested that the social information including prejudice or stereotype can be differently processed according to the value of emotionality.

  • This study investigated the specific effects of dance themed movies on dance students in their passion for dance and affect. The related data is generated by choosing a method of Convenience Sampling and used a sample of 112 dance students in high school of arts which located in Seongnam-si, South Korea. The dance students divided into 3 group of school year and also 2 group of gender. The dance themed movies which are used in this research are First Position, Billy Elliot and Mao's Last Dancer. Also, the dance students were asked to answer the survey which are based on the Self-administration. In order to obtain several findings below, Frequency analysis, Exploratory factor analysis, Reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Correlation analysis and Linear structural relation model were applied to the gathered data using statistics utility SAS 9.4. First, there was a significant difference between the school years in the passion for dance and affect of students after watching movies. Second, there was a significant difference in students' affect depended on their majors (dance major is divided into three specialized major which are ballet, korean dance and modern dance). Third, there was a significant difference in the passion for dance and students' affect which is irreverent to their dance career (such as years they have learned dance). Forth, there was a significant difference in the passion for dance and negative affect of 'dance' students after watching movies. To summarize, the findings demonstrate that there is a partial difference, specially significant effects on their negative affect in the dance passion and affect of dance students depended on their characteristics after watching dance themed movies.

  • This study had three purposes. First, the effects of job-related affective states on emotional labor (deep acting and surface acting) of employees engaging in service job were examined. Second, previous studies focused on the negative effects of emotional labor on job attitudes. On the other hand, this study dealt with not only the negative effects of emotional labor but also its positive effects. In particular, this study examined the effects of emotional labor on positive job attitudes, such as job commitment and job involvement, as well as negative job attitudes, such as exhaustion and cynicism. Finally, this study examined the mediation effect of emotional labor on the relationship between the job-related affective state and job attitudes. The data was collected from 150 employees working in 15 service firms in Korea. The results were as follows. First, the positive job-related affective state increased the deep-acting. On the other hand, negative job-related affective state increased surface-acting. Second, the main effect of deep-acting on positive job attitudes (dedication and vigor) was significant. In addition, the main effects of surface-acting on the negative job attitudes (exhaustion and cynicism) was significant. Finally, the mediating effect of deep-acting on the relationship between positive job-related affective state and positive job attitudes was significant. In addition, surface-acting mediated the relationship between negative job-related affective state and negative job attitudes. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are provided in the discussion session.

  • This paper was intended to examine the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of statements in the context of eyewitness testimony. The main emotion theories and concepts introduced in previous studies examining the relation between testimony accuracy and negative emotions were examined based on the characteristics of the research method. The results were presented in the order of emotion definition, emotion inducing method, and emotion measurement method. Specifically, the definition of emotion was described based on studies on negative emotions, arousal, stress, and mood. The emotion inducing method was mainly described based on images, virtual reality, and staged events designed by researchers, which have been mainly used in laboratories. Emotion measurement methods were described with respect to the self-report, behavioral checklist, and psychophysiology. In addition, the emotional approach for objective and scientific repeated verification, the importance of effective experimental design and appropriate scientific memory test, and the need for individual difference control were discussed. This paper reinterprets the contradictions shown by previous research by systematically structuring the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of testimony. It was meaningful to provide a frame for comparative analysis of related studies. Ultimately, it is expected that such knowledge will be used as basic documents for judging the reliability of eyewitness testimony in a legal context.

  • This study investigated the profiles of anger expression (anger control, anger in, anger out) and their variation in forms, and determined the differences in depression, aggression, and negative affect intensity of middle school students. For this purpose, the survey responses of 296 middle school students in Seoul were analyzed. The major study results are as follows. (1) Cluster analyses yielded four anger expression profiles: cluster 1 was characterized by high scores for anger control, anger in and anger out, cluster 2 by low scores for anger control, high scores for anger in and anger out, cluster 3 by low scores for anger control, anger in and anger out, and cluster 4 by low scores for anger in, high scores for anger control and anger out. (2) Between-cluster differences in depression, aggression, and negative affect intensity were all significant. The posteriori test indicated that cluster 4 was higher than the other three clusters in terms of depression. Cluster 3 was higher than the other three clusters on aggression, cluster 2 was higher than cluster 4 in terms of aggression. The interventions by aggression expression cluster are discussed and the implications of this research to education and counseling are explained.

  • According to the social selectivity theory (SST), despite the disadvantages of life conditions, older adults experience less negative emotions because they regulate their emotions by avoiding negative stimuli or situations. Based on the SST, this study attempted to find out whether older adults are better able to regulate negative emotions than young adults in the Ultimatum Game (UG). In an UG, if the proposer proposes to distribute a portion of the money to the responder, the responder must decide whether to accept or reject it. If the responder accepts the offer, the proposer and the responder can each have their own share as proposed, but if s/he reject the offer, both get nothing. Thus, if the responder considers own economic benefits, it is a more reasonable decision to accept the unfair offer no matter how low, than to reject it. To accept an unfair offer, the responder must regulate the anger felt at the proposer. If older adults could regulate anger better than young adults, they would be less likely to reject the unfair offer than young adults. Fifty-seven olders and 60 university students participated in this study. Both the older and young adults accepted most of the fair offers. In contrast, older adults accepted unfair offers at a significantly higher rate than young adults. In addition, compared to young adults, older adults reported anger less frequently at the unfair offers. Accepting unfair offers was negatively correlated with anger report, but positively correlated with the emotion regulation measured by ERQ. The ERQ score was negatively correlated with anger report. Emotion regulation partially mediated the relationship between the age groups and acceptance of unfair offers. The present results showed that older adults accepted the unfair offers at a higher rate than young adults because they could regulate the negative emotions felt at the unfair offer better than young adults. This study provided new evidence for the claim that improving emotional regulation is a major developmental change in adulthood.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between value types and life satisfaction of Korean university students. 275 students' scores for value types, positive·negative affectivity, and subjective well-being were obtained using questionnaires. Data was analysed by correlation analysis and path analysis. The results can be summarized as followings. First, the correlation between all negative affectivity and all value was not significant. Second, conformity, benevolence, self-direction·stimulation, hedonism, achievement and security value types were positively correlated with positive affectivity, whereas, conformity, benevolence, universalism and security value types were positively correlated with life satisfaction. Third, the student's higher scores of conformity, benevolence and hedonism value types induced higher level of positive affectivity, which, in turn, increased life satisfaction. The results suggested that value types can indirectly influence life satisfaction through positive affectivity.
