  • There are several methods which estimate the behavior of the Structures. Recently, several displacement measuring instruments such a GPS are substantially developed. So, considering this technique, displacement measurement will be a very efficient method for estimating the behavior of the Structures and maintenance. Therefore we need to develop methods of structure maintenance & management by using displacement measuring instruments. In this study, I suggest to maintenance & management method by using displacements about simple beams and cantilever beams which are very important structure in civil engineering. The results show that the proposed method is capable of estimating the displacement and stress of the Beam Member by combining the proper number of measurement and optimum measurement points.

  • This paper deals with basic theories and some numerical results on structural optimization for geodesic dome. First of all, the space efficiency of geodesic dome is investigated by using the ratio of icosahedron's surface area to the internal volume enclosed by it. The procedure how to create the geodesic dome is also provided in systematic way and implemented and utilized into the design optimization code ISADO-OPT. The mathematical programming technique is introduced to find out the optimum pattern of member size of geodesic dome against a point load. In this study, total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of geodesic dome are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The SLP, SQP and MFDM available in the optimizer DoT is used to search optimum member size patterns of geodesic dome. It is found to be that the optimum member size pattern can be efficiently obtained by using the proposed design optimization technique and numerical results can be used as benchmark test as a basic reference solution for design optimization of dome structures.

  • In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.

  • In this study, a nonlinear dynamic analysis of a frame and single member, which reflect the characteristics of a plant facility, is performed using the commercial MIDAS GEN program and the results are analyzed. The general structural members and material properties of the plant are considered. The Newmark average-acceleration numerical-analysis method is applied to a plastic hinge to study material nonlinearity. The blast load of a vapor-cloud explosion, a representative plant explosion, is calculated, and nonlinear dynamic analysis is conducted on a frame and single member. The observed dynamic behavior is organized according to the ratio of natural period to load duration, maximum displacement, ductility, and rotation angle. The conditions and range under which the frame functions as a single member are analyzed and derived. NSFF with a beam-column stiffness ratio of 0.5 and ductility of 2.0 or more can be simplified and analyzed as FFC, whereas NSPF with a beam-column stiffness ratio of 0.5 and ductility of 1.5 or more can be simplified and analyzed as FPC. The results of this study can serve as guidelines for the blast-resistant design of plant facilities.

  • In this study, the effects of the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint on the response of RC OMRF are evaluated in the inelastic time history analysis. For an example, a 5-story structure for site class SB and seismic design category C was designed in accordance with KBC2009. Bending moment-curvature relationship for beam and column was evaluated using fiber model and bending moment-rotation relationship for beam-column joint was calculated using simple and unified joint shear behavior model and moment equilibrium relationship. The hysteretic behavior was simulated using three-parameter model suggested in IDARC program. The inelastic time history analysis with PGA for return period of 2400 years showed that the model with inelastic beam-column joint yielded smaller maximum base shear force but nearly equivalent maximum roof displacement and maximum story drift as those obtained from analysis using rigid joint. The maximum story drift satisfied the criteria of KBC2009. Therefore, the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint could be neglected in the structural design.

  • For the connections between modular units in modular buildings, the bolted joints with connector plates are used commonly. The strength of structure is determined by the weakest part of structure and the connections may be weaker than the members being joined. Therefore, to check the safety of modular building, the structural performance of connections between modular units as well as that of beam-to-column connections should be evaluated. In this study, the behavior of module to module connection with straight and cross shaped connector plates is investigated by lateral cyclic tests according to KBC2009 0722.2.4 which shall be conducted by controlling the story drift angle in the width and the longitudinal direction respectively. All of test results generally show the stable ductile behavior up to 0.04rad drift levels and the tests in longitudinal direction show a superior energy dissipation per cycle in each of the load steps. However, the straight shaped connector plates have the degradation of stiffness with cyclic loading and the larger drift angle of column than the cross shaped connector plates.

  • Improved numerical method to obtain the exact stiffness matrices is newly proposed to perform the spatially coupled elastic and stability analyses of non-symmetric and open/closed thin-walled beam on elastic foundation. This method overcomes drawbacks of the previous method to evaluate the exact stiffness matrix for the spatially coupled stability analysis of thin-walled beam-column This numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized eigenproblem associated with 14 displacement parameters by transforming equilibrium equations to a set of first order simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Next polynomial expressions as trial solutions are assumed for displacement parameters corresponding to zero eigenvalues and the eigenmodes containing undetermined parameters equal to the number of zero eigenvalues are determined by invoking the identity condition. And then the exact displacement functions are constructed by combining eigensolutions and polynomial solutions corresponding to non-zero and zero eigenvalues, respectively. Consequently an exact stiffness matrix is evaluated by applying the member force-deformation relationships to these displacement functions. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the practical usefulness of this study, the numerical solutions are compared with results obtained from the thin-walled beam and shell elements.

  • Recently, concerns relating to the maintenance of large structures have been increased. In addition, the number of large structures that need to be evaluated for their structural safety due to natural disasters and structural deterioration has been rapidly increasing. It is common for the structural characteristics of an older large structure to differ from the characteristics in the initial design stage, and changes in dynamic characteristics may result from a reduction in stiffness due to cracks on the materials. The process of deterioration of such structures enables the detection of damaged locations, as well as a quantitative evaluation. One of the typical measuring instruments used for the monitoring of bridges and buildings is the dynamic measurement system. Conventional dynamic measurement systems require considerable cabling to facilitate a direct connection between sensor and DAQ logger. For this reason, a method of measuring structural responses from a remote distance without the mounted sensors is needed. In terms of non-contact methods that are applicable to dynamic response measurement, the methods using the doppler effect of a laser or a GPS are commonly used. However, such methods could not be generally applied to bridge structures because of their costs and inaccuracies. Alternatively, a method using a visual image can be economical as well as feasible for measuring vibration signals of inaccessible bridge structures and extracting their dynamic characteristics. Many studies have been conducted using camera visual signals instead of conventional mounted sensors. However, these studies have been focused on measuring displacement response by an image processing technique after recording a position of the target mounted on the structure, in which the number of measurement targets may be limited. Therefore, in this study, a model experiment was carried out to verify the measurement algorithm for measuring multi-point displacement responses by using a DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique.

  • This study focuses evaluating the efficiency and performance evaluation of composite type sheet-membrane waterproofing method that utilizes a separation behavior inducement system designed to resolve the chronic problems of disintegration and damage of overlap areas of waterproofing layers. As the result of the test, the tensile strength value was at 13.8N/mm and elongation rate at 587% for the separation behavior inducement type specimen, and the compared specimens had 14.2N/mm for tensile strength and 335% for elongation rate. For the separation behavior adhesion method specimen, when tensile stress or displacement occurred, the Zero-Span tension occurrence did not follow, which resulted in that the bottom sheet layer and the top membrane layer did not simultaneously becoming damaged. When undergoing the top and bottom layers were separated through separation behavior due to lack of flexibility, the bottom layer began to damage at the primary stage, and with the allowed boundary the upper membrane layer began to display flexibility and showed continuous displaced resulting in secondary phase damaging.
