  • It is much expected that steel bridges, which have been damaged by increase of vehicle load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. In this paper, the stress generated by repair welding under loading are analyzed by three dimensional elasto-plastic analyses. The longer and deeper repair weld line bocemes, the larger the magnitude of transient stress becomes. The magnitude of transient stress generated by repair welding under loading $({\sigma}_y/3,\;{\sigma}_a)$ is similar to summation of stresses generated by repair welding and loading. The longer repair weld line ratio(1/b) becomes, the larger the magnitude of transient stress generated by repair welding under loading bocomes. And, the longer repair weld line ratio(1/b) becomes, the larger the magnitude of in-plane displacement generated by repair welding under loading$({\sigma}_y/3,\;{\sigma}_a)$.

  • This paper concerns the effect of orientation and geometric characteristics of a fracture zone on the tunnel behavior using a numerical investigation. A parametric study was executed on a number of drill and blast tunnelling cases representing different fracture and tunnelling conditions using two and three dimensional finite element analyses. The variables considered include the strike and dip angle of fracture zone relative to the longitudinal tunnel axis, the width and the clearance of the fracture zone, the tunnel depth, and the initial lateral stress coefficient. The results of the analyses were examined in terms of the tunnel deformation including crown settlement, convergence, and invert heave as well as shotcrete lining stresses. The results indicate that the tunnel deformation as well as the shotcrete lining stress are strongly influenced by the orientation of the fracture zone, and that such a trend becomes more pronounced for tunnels with greater depths.

  • With the nation showing increasing concern for earthquakes, there have been several methods for the analysis of earthquakes and evaluation of damage. Nevertheless, there is no clear standard to assess the seismic damage to structures quantitatively. Accordingly, this study conducted seismic analysis of several forms of seismic waves and actual seismic load, targeting the cable stayed bridge, which is supported by a cable and proposes a method for evaluating the damage based on the results. The damage index was calculated based on the tilting of the pylon of the cable-stayed bridge and the characteristics of physical seismic damage was suggested with 4 levels, such as A, B, C, and D. In addition, it is not proper to simply judge that the seismic damage index is obtained as large or small at all times depending on the seismic analysis method. Although this study focused on the proposal seismic damage index and an evaluation of the damage targeting the cable stayed bridge, the result was applied to a structure with a similar maximum displacement response.

  • In this study, numerical analyses on cut-and-cover tunnel linings were performed using different modeling methods based on both structural and geotechnical engineering. The purpose was to find a relatively more reasonable modeling method and boundary conditions. The results of the study revealed problems associated with each modeling method and factors influencing the behavior of cut-and-cover tunnel lining. A method was proposed allowing the simulation of field condition in a more rational way. It was indicated that, under the given conditions, displacements and member forces occurring on concrete lining could be different as much as 53% depending on the type of modeling method applied; and 32% depending on the boundary conditions employed. Determination of boundary conditions properly simulating actual field conditions and verification of prediction based on instrumentation are essential for rational design and analysis.

  • The general formulation for free vibration and stability analysis of unsymmetric thin-wared space frames is presented in case where the shear deformation effects are neglected. The kinetic and total potential energies are derived by applying the extended virtual work principle, introducing displacement parameters defined at the arbitrarily chosen axis and including warping deformation and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. In formulating the finite element procedure, cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions of the two node space frame element. Mass, elastic stiffness, and geometric stiffness matrices for the unsymmetric thin-walled section are evaluated, and load-correction stiffness matrices for off-axis distributed loadings are considered. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this formulation, finite element solutions for the free vibration and stability problems of thin-walled beam-columns and space frames are presented and compared with available solutions.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis has been conducted in order to check behavior characteristics of liner plate made of corrugated steel from urban small sized tunnel excavation. The analysis was conducted with five kinds of conditions like 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m and 25 m to examine the behavior characteristics of liner plate according to the depth of cover. Analysis results showed that the maximum axial stress and the maximum displacement occurs in the lower end of the member, and the maximum shear stress occurs in the upper part of the member. Also, change of displacement, stress shearing stress of liner plate based on various depth of cover are existed, but the difference is slight, and by increasing depth of cover, structural stability is gradually ensured.

  • The wind load and structural characteristics of a twin building are more complex than those of conventional high-rise buildings. The pressure load due to wind on a twin building was therefore measured via wind tunnel experiments to analyze such characteristics. The wind pressure pattern was then deduced from measured data using proper orthogonal decomposition. Channeling and vortex shedding were observed in the first and second modes, respectively. The along-wind loads on the two buildings featured a positive correlation and the cross-wind loads featured no correlation. Such a correlation affected the wind-induced displacement. The structural member connecting the two buildings had an insignificant effect on the positive correlation, but it notably reduced the wind-induced displacement with a negative correlation.

  • Structural design of most nonprismatic Pre-Engineered Building Systems (PEBS) is performed using optimizing software developed in foreign countries. In this study, a structural optimizing software for the design of 3-D structures of nonprismatic PEBS is developed according to the allowable stress design method of AISC2005 and KBC. Optimizing structural design with nonprismatic members is carried out by repeating the process of structural analysis and member design to minimize the weight of a structure. According to the optimizing design results of 2-D and 3-D structures with nonprismatic members, there are considerable steel savings in designing structures with nonprismatic H-shaped built-up sections rather than with H-shaped rolled sections. When H-shaped built-up sections were used, the weight of the structural steel was reduced when AISC2005 specification rather than AISC1898 was used in the design. It is therefore concluded that utilizing the new AISC2005 specification is safer in preventingweb buckling because the height of a member is designed to be small despite some differences depending on the structural type.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the flexural strengthening method of the concrete members. To accomplish this objective, a total of seven concrete beams were tested. From this study, it is found that the initial flexural stiffness and strength of the beams reinforced with NSM CFRP strips were significantly improved compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Failure of the beam reinforced with NSM strips is initiated by failure of NSM strips, eventually sudden explosive compressive failure in the loaded region. This strengthening method combined with NSM CFRP strips and high performance mortar for concrete cover recovery is evaluated by a good strengthening method for the strength, durability and good appearance of concrete structures.

  • This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of 2-dimensional shallow arch type truss after sizing optimization. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of 2D arch truss against a central point load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of truss are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The postbuckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge change of post-buckling behaviour between the initial structure and optimum structure. Numerical results can be used as useful information for future research of large spatial structures.
