There is a great need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High-strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels. The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether the inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel was tested to evaluate buckling strength under axial compressive force. The comparison tests for local buckling strength evaluation of box-type and H-shaped welded columns were performed with variable width-thickness ratios. As for the experimental check, the maximum strength of stub column was determined by local buckling as far as the limit of width-to-thickness ratio was satisfied with current design codes. Also, the strength of the stub column did not decrease suddenly by local buckling before maximum strength even when the ratio is not satisfied. The buckling strength of SM570TMC steel was higher than both ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) specifications.

Drift design of a high-rise building is a governing factor in the determination of structural weights and lateral resisting systems. However, high-rise buildings are composed of tens of thousands of structural member, designer can not know which members are active to lateral drift control and how much they contribute to lateral drifts. Resizing technique was proved to be a practical method for drift design of high-rise buildings. However, no resizing algorithm has been considered the effect of vertical loads in drift designs. Thus, in this paper, a resizing algorithm has been developed for drift designs of high-rise buildings subjected to both lateral and vertical loads. The drift design model has been applied to drift designs of two high-rise building examples.
The purpose of the present study is to develop a computer program which can be used to analyze prestressed concrete structures containing either bonded or unbonded tendons. To accomplish this, first, the concrete, nonprestressed, and prestressed steels are modeled with cyclic constitutive laws to take into account the various loading effects. Then, the hybrid-type element method is derived to improve the computations capability of stresses and strains, especially for the unbonded tendon. Since it allows one to determine the cross-sectional deformations in an element without any assumptions for its deformed shape, the element length can be much longer than that of the conventional finite element method. In order to achieve such a long element, various integral schemes are examined to implement them into the program. Then, the computational method for prestressing effects is developed consistently with the analytical method for the structure. Finally, analytical studies for actual tests were carried out to verify the program developed in this study.
The floor tile on a coated green-glass was excavated from the Beobgwangsa Temple Site in the Pohang City. We analyzed using the MXRD, ICP-AES, EDXRF, TG/DTA and TIMS. As a result of microscope analysis, it was composed of quartz, feldspar and clay particl
Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are sometimes used when corrosion of conventional reinforcing steel bar is of concern. In this study, a total of 36 beams and one-way slabs reinforced using GFRP bars were tested in flexure. Four different GFRP bars of 13 mm diameter were used in the test program. In most test specimens, the GFRP bars were lap spliced at center. All beams and slabs were tested under 4-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. Test variables were splice lengths, cover thicknesses, and bar spacings. No stirrups were used in the spliced region so that the tests result in conservative bond strengths. Average bond stresses that develop between GFRP bars and concrete were determined through nonlinear analysis of the cross-sections. An average bond stress prediction equation was derived utilizing two-variable linear regression. A splice length equation based on 5% fractile concept was then developed. As a result of this study, a rational equation with which design splice lengths of the GFRP bars can be determined, was proposed.

This paper discusses the homogenization method to determine effective average elastic constants of a linear structure by considering its microstructure. A detailed description on the homogenization method is given for the linear elastic material and then the finite element approximation is performed for an investigation of elastic properties. An asymptotic expansion is carried out in the cross-section area, or in the unit cell. Two and three lay-up structures made up of individual isotropic constituents are chosen for numerical examples to check discrepancies between results generated by this theoretical development and the conventional approach. Asymptotic characteristics of the process in extracting the stiffness of structure locally formed by spatial repetitions yield underestimated values of stiffness. These discrepancies are detected by the asymptotic corrective term which is ascribed to considerations of microscopic perturbations and proved in the finite element formulation. The asymptotic analysis is the more reasonable in analysing the composite material, rather than the conventional approach to calculate the macroscopic average for elastic properties.
Recently, the demands for steel frame are increasing because of the trend and due to the demand for bigger and higher buildings. In the analysis of typical steel frame, connections are based on the idealized fixed or pinned connection. A fixed connection assumes that the relative angle of each member before deformation is the same after the transformation. Therefore, the stiffener reinforces the connection to sufficient rigidity and stability of the panel zone. In the economical aspect, however, the necessity of connection that the stiffener reinforcement has omitted is increasing due to the excessive production as well as labor costs of connection. In contrast, pinned connection is assumed that bending moments between the beams and columns do not transfer to each member. This is easy to make in the plant and the construction is simple. However, the structural efficiency is reduced in pinned connection because connection cannot transfer moments. The introduction of this semirigid process can decide efficient cross-sectional dimensions that promote ease in the course of structural erection, as performed by members in the field-a call for safety in the entire frame. Therefore, foreign countries exert efforts to study the practical behavior and the results are applied to criterion. This paper analyzes the semirigid connection of domestic steel by design specifications of AISC/LRFD and make data bank that pertain to each steel. After wards, the results are compared to those of idealized connection; at the same time, this paper presents a design method that matches economic efficiency, end-fixity, and rotational stiffness.

In the offshore industry, helicopters are mainly used for transportation of goods or operating personnel between offshore sites and onshore facilities. A helideck is a structure that is required for landing and take-off of helicopters on the offshore structure. There are several shapes of helidecks depending on the type of offshore structures or installation location. Among them, cantilever-type helidecks usually provide more space on the topside of offshore structures and it is safer against potential accidents like fire or explosion. In this paper, the cantilever-type helideck is selected for the research object and topology design optimization is applied for lightweight design of the helideck. A finite element model is then created from the optimal layout of truss structures of the helideck, and structural analysis is performed under various landing conditions and wind loads. Based on the analysis results, the detailed section dimensions of structural members are determined so that the maximum stress at each structure member does not exceed the allowable stress of the structural material. Also, the final optimal design shows significant decrease in the total weight of the helideck.

Currently, in the domestic construction industry, the free web method has been emerging as a potential solution to the shortage of skilled workers due to the prolonged COVID-19 crisis, as it helps in securing economic feasibility through shortening the construction period and reducing labor costs. To consider one part of the construction method, in this study, the bending behavior according to the load was evaluated for the SY slope-type beam formwork, which was manufactured at a factory, assembled with rebar, brought into the site, and then poured into the site. For the SY Beam standard cross-sectional shape, a cross-sectional dimensional width of 400mm and depth 600mm determined through structural modeling using the MIDAS GEN program were applied. A total of 6 specimens were made with a member length of 5,000mm, 5 specimens and one RC specimen in the comparison group were manufactured in real-size format using the thickness of the steel plate(0.8, 1.0, 1.2mm) as a variable, and bending experiments were performed. In the bending test, the steel plate deck showed high initial stiffness and maximum strength as it yielded, which showed that it sufficiently contributed to the flexural strength. It is judged that additional analysis and experimental studies for 1.05, 1.1, and 1.15mm are needed to derive the appropriate steel plate thickness and the method for calculating the tensile force contribution of the steel plate to secure the manufacturing, construction and economic feasibility of SY Beam in the future.

This study investigates the effectiveness of Building Information Modeling(BIM) software, specifically SketchUp and Revit, in reducing errors during quantity take-off(QTO) for complex building elements. While 3D modeling offers advantages, existing software may not fully account for manufacturing discrepancies, such as variations in concrete cover thickness and reinforcing bar radius. To address this limitation, this research proposes a BIM-based QTO method for high-insulation wall panels with intricate details. The method utilizes a BIM family library, focusing on key parameters like concrete cover thickness and inner radius of shear reinforcement. A case study compared the cross-sectional details of a wall panel modeled in Revit with the actual manufactured specimen. The analysis revealed a 12% reduction in modeled concrete cover thickness and a 1.27 times larger modeled inner radius of the shear bar compared to the real-world values. The proposed method incorporates these manufacturing variations into the Revit model of the high-insulation wall panel. Software like Navisworks facilitates the identification and correction of any material interferences arising from these adjustments. Furthermore, the method employs a unit wall concept(1m2) to account for the volume of various materials, including insulation and splice sleeves at joints. This allows for the identification of a similar existing family within the BIM library(e.g., "Double RC wall with embedded insulation") that reflects the actual material quantities used in the wall panel. By incorporating these manufacturing-induced variations, the proposed method offers a more accurate QTO process for complex high-insulation wall panels. The "Double RC wall with embedded insulation" family within the Revit program serves as a valuable tool for material quantity estimation in such scenarios.
