  • Purpose : Trichosanthis Radix is traditional medical herb which has been shown to inhibit tumor cell proliferation. In this study, the effects of Trichosanthis Radix extract were investigated on inducing growth inhibition and apoptosis of human uterine cervical carcinoma cells. Methods : Human uterine cervical carcinoma cells line, ME-180, was used for the study. The cells were treated with varying concentrations of Trichosanthis Radix extract. Cell growth and inhibitory rate were measured by MTT assay. Apoptosis induction was detected by fluorescence microscopy, DNA ladder formation and flow cytometry. Results : Trichosanthis Radix extract inhibited the growth of human uterine cervical carcinoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. It induced ME-180 cells to undergo apoptosis including fragmented nuclei and nucleosome-sized DNA fragmentation. Flow cytometric analysis showed the increasing rate of apoptotic cells by Trichosanthis Radix extract. Reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and increase in caspase-3 activity and were found in ME-180 cells treated with Trichosanthis Radix extract. Conclusion : Our data suggest that Trichosanthis Radix extract inhibit the growth and proliferation of ME-180 cells by apoptotic induction and facilitates its activity via caspase-3 activation initiated by depolarization of mitochondria.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between the pulse energy and hot flush in women who complain of climacteric syndrome. Methods: We analyzed the values of pulse energy on 78 of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. The symptoms of patients were assessed by Kupperman’s index (KI) and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Statistical analysis was performed by Spearman correlation coefficient and student T-test, using SPSS 18.0 for window program. Results: The results were as follows. 1. There were no statistically significant relation between pulse energy of left Cheok subtracted from left Chon and KI, MRS hot flush score. 2. When divided depending on MRS hot flush score, There were no statistically significant differences on pulse energy. Conclusions: The results suggest that there is no correlation between hot flush score and pulse energy.

  • Objectives: This paper aims to report the effects of Korean medical treatment on a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Methods: An ovarian cancer patient underwent abdominal surgery and got Korean medical treatment during 7-day hospitalization. About 2 years later, with metastasis to the lymph nodes detected, she had abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and got Korean medical treatment during 10-day hospitalization. The treatment included herbal medicine and acupuncture. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of symptoms was measured every morning. Results: After the treatment, sequela following surgery decreased, and general conditions improved. During 1st and 2nd hospitalization, NRS of general weakness, heartburn and dorsal chill significantly decreased (10 to 5, 10 to 5 and 10 to 2, respectively) while edema in both legs remained the same. Conclusions: This case shows that Korean medical treatment is effective for a patient who underwent abdominal surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

Methods: We treated the patient who had secondary dysmenorrhea caused by HWWS, with acupuncture, herbal medicines, pharmacopuncture and hyperthermia therapy at ⃝⃝Hospital of Korean Medicine from July 9th 2016 to September 8th 2016. We evaluated changes of symptoms by Visual analog scale score (VAS), Multidimensional verbal rating scale (MVRS) and Verbal rating scale (VRS). Results: After treatments, the clinical symptoms such as dysmenorrhea (lower abdominal pain & lower back pain), lower abdominal fullness were significantly improved, VAS was decreased, but the improvement of scores on MVRS, VRS were unclear. Conclusions: This case report shows that Korean medical treatment is effective to treat secondary dysmenorrhea caused by HWWS.
