  • This study documents the level of paleo-shoreline and the timing of formation of the lowest marine terrace (1st terrace) distributed in Dadaepo, Busan, South Korea. In the study area, the elevation of paleo-shoreline of the 1st terrace is clearly identified as 5 meters above mean high tide based on the elevation of wave-cut platforms and the elevation of boundary between marine and terrestial sediments. This is well consistent with the fact that are found along the Southern coast of the Korean Peninsula including Daepo-dong, Sacheon-si. The timing of formation of the 1st terrace in Dadaepo is confirmed to have been deposited around 70,000~80,000 years BP (MIS 5a) according to OSL and IRSL dating ages. However, because the formation age of the 1st terrace in Sacheon-si Daepo-dong (Southerm coast) and Pohang-si Umok-ri (Eastern coast) previously identified as about 90,000~100,000 years BP (MIS 5c), further discussion of what is needed. Possibly, it can be interpreted that the sub-interglacial (MIS 5a and 5c) sea-level records during the last interglacial period are likely to be selective on land depending on regions.

  • As can be seen in many earthquakes, liquefaction causes differential settlement, which sometimes produces serious damages such as building destruction and ground subsidence. There are many possible active faults near the Busan city and the Yangsan, Dongrae, and Ilgwang faults among them pass through the city. The Busan city is also located within the influence of recent earthquakes, which occurred in the Gyeongju, Pohang, and Kumamoto (Japan). Along the wide fault valleys in the city, the Quaternary unconsolidated alluvial sediments are thickly accumulated, and the reclaimed lands with beach sediments are widely distributed in the coastal area. A large earthquake near or in the Busan city is thus expected to cause major damage due to liquefaction in urban areas. This study conducted an assessment of the liquefaction hazard according to seismic recurrence intervals across the Busan city. As a result, although there are slight differences in degree depending on seismic recurrence intervals, it is predicted that the liquefaction potential is very high in the areas of the Nakdonggang Estuary, Busan Bay, Suyeong Bay, and Songjeong Station. In addition, it is shown that the shorter the seismic recurrence interval, the greater difference the liquefaction potential depending on site periods.

  • WAM(WAve Model), deep water wave model has been extended to the region of shallow water, incorporating wave breaking, and triad wave interaction. To verify this model, two numerical simulations for hydraulic experiments of Chawla et al.(1998) and Beji and Battjes(1993) are performed. The computed results show good agreements with measured ones. To identify its applicability to real sea, it is applied to storm wave modelling for typhoon Maemi. Numerical results compared with measured ones at Geoje, Busan and Ulsan show reasonable wave height estimations.

  • This study aimed to investigate the change of wind speed during winter and summer seasons for 50 years(1961-2010). It were analyzed the mean wind speed, maximum wind speed, windy days and storm days on January and August of 13 weather stations in South Korea. The mean wind speed was decreased in the coastal region(Busan, Jeju, Ulsan, Pohang) in winter and summer seasons. Also it was similar to windy day. The relationship between wind speed and mean temperature has negative correlation in winter season. The relationship is low in summer season. The number of windy day and storm day has negative relation with monthly mean temperature.

  • On the 25th of November in 1997 winter season, unprecedented high waves were recorded at the southern part of Korea Peninsular. The significant wave heights over 4 m were recorded at Marado, Pusan and Ulrungdo successively with time lags. Seoguipo breakwaters which were under construction were damaged by the unexpected high waves. These unprecedented southerly high waves in winter seem to be caused by unusual development and traveling of low pressure. Weather charts and wave fields calculated by a numerical model were analyzed to examine the unusual development of these waves. Protection against the southerly high waves in winter must be considered in coastal constructions and structures.

  • Two methods for computing extreme sea levels, which are the extreme probability method and the joint probability method, are examined at five different ports (Incheon, Cheju, Yeosu, Pusan, Mukho). The extreme probability mothod estimates the extreme sea levels from three different probability papers of Gumbel, Weibull and generalized extreme value(GEV) using the least square method, conventional moment method and probability weighted moment method. respectively. The results showed that the extreme sea levels estimated by the Gumbel paper or the least square method appeared higher than those calculated by other papers or methods. The extreme values estimated by the extreme probability method are approximately 5-10 cm lower than the values by the joint probability method.

  • Estimation of wave height is the most important factor in the design of coastal structures such as breakwaters. In the present study, typhoon wind distribution was constructed by applying the parametric model of Holland (1980), and numerical simulations on the typhoon-generated waves were carried out using the WAM. The typhoons which affected the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula and several hypothetical typhoons were selected to construct the training sets. Design wave heights were estimated using the empirical simulation technique for various return periods and wave directions. The estimated design wave heights were compared with those by the peaks-over-threshold method and the results of KORDI(2005).

  • Recently huge typhoons had attacked to the coastal waters in Korea and caused disastrous casualties in those area. There are some discussions on correction to the design parameters for the coastal structures. Wave transformation computations with the extreme waves are of value in planning and constructing engineering works, especially in coastal regions. Prediction of typhoon surge elevations is based primarily on the use of a numerical model in this study, since it is difficult to study these events in real time or with use of physical models. Wave prediction with a two dimensional numerical model for a site with complicated coastal lines and structures at the period of typhoon 'Maemi' is discussed. In order to input parameters for the extreme wave conditions, we analyzed the observed and predicted typhoon data. Finally we applied the model discussed above to the storm surge and extreme wave problem at Busan Harbor, the southeast coast of Korea. Effects of water level variation and transformation of the extreme waves in relation with the flooding in coastal waters interested are analyzed. We then mack an attempt to presen a basic hazard map for the corresponding site.

  • Hourly tide-gauge data at 10 tide stations along the West/South coasts were analysed statistically for tidesurge interaction. Interactions were found at all stations except Busan, prominently at the western tip of the South coast near Mokpo and Wando. A well-known interaction pattern which occurs at flood tide was found rarely at domestic coasts, while another pattern of the tide-modulated surge which occurs at low tide was detected frequently. In addition, a new interaction pattern which occurs at ebb tide is discovered. This pattern is found at Mokpo where the ebb dominance is prominent. Finally, the skew surge could be considered as a tool coping with such interactions.

  • Applicability of the MIKE21 model as a real time coupled tide-surge model is examined prior to the application as an inundation model. Though the model domain contains the whole southern coasts of Korean Peninsula, the results of tide simulations show good agreement with the observed values. Moreover, the coupled tide-surge model simulates water levels well, especially near the sites which typhoon MAEMI(0314) struck, such as at Tongyung, Masan and Pusan. In addition, it is confirmed that the interaction between storm surge and tide is notable where the water depth is small and the tidal range is large, which indicates the necessity of coupled model especially at the southwestern coast.
