  • 아연-산화은 전지는 높은 에너지 및 전력밀도를 가지고 있으나 비싼 제작비용 때문에 우주항공, 군사무기 등 특수한 분야에서 주로 이용되며, 특히 전해액이 별도의 용기에 보관되어 있다가 외부 신호에 의해 충전된 dry상태의 전지에 주입되어 활성화되는 1차 또는 비축형 아연산화은 전지는 우수한 고율방전 특성, 장시간의 저장기간 및 활성화와 동시에 부하를 인가 할 수 있는 특성 때문에 많은 무기체계에서 이용하고 있다. 이러한 아연-산화은 전지의 아연전극은 높은 다공도와 반응 면적을 가져야 하며, 특히 방전중 아연전극의 전위는 가역 수소전위 보다 더 음전위이기 때문에 수소가스가 다량 발생하게 되므로 수은과 같은 높은 과전압을 갖는 물질을 첨가하여 가스 발생량을 줄이고 부동태화(passivation)를 억제하게 된다. 그러나 국내 여건상 수은을 사용하여 전지를 제작하는 것은 환경문제 등으로 인하여 어렵기 때문에 본 연구에서는 수은을 사용하지 않고 비축형 아연-산화은 전지의 음극판을 제작하기 위하여 전착법(electro deposit)과 mesh 제작방법을 혼합하여 아연전극을 제작하였으며, 기판에 석출된 아연과 아연 mesh의 질량비율에 따른 전지의 성능을 평가하였다.

  • Ethylene glycol (EG) is the most commonly used for automotive antifreeze, and it's easily misuseful for human. EG poisoning occurs in suicide attempts and infrequently, either intentionally through misuse or accidentally because of sweet taste. Though EG itself is mild toxic to the human body, it becomes higher toxic organic acids by in vivo broken down that are responsible for extensive cellular damage in various tissues caused principally by the metabolites. It is already well known that various cellular stresses induce gene expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperones and ER stress sensors. This study demonstrated that regulation of gene expression of ER chaperones and ER stress sensors was induced by EG in rat tissues, and in tissues histological changes are also detected by both staining H&E and immunofluorescent.

Experimental Investigation on the Thermal Performance Enhancement of Cooling System for Vehicles using Water/Coolant-Based Al2O3 Nanofluids (물/부동액-기반Al2O3나노유체를 이용한 차량용 냉각시스템 성능 향상에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the thermal performance of vehicle's cooling system is experimentally investigated using the water/coolant-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids as working fluids. For the purpose, the water/coolant-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids are prepared by twostep method with gum arabic. In order to obtain the well-suspended nanofluids, the agglomerated $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles are precipitated using centrifugal force and the experiments are performed with supernatant of them. The thermal conductivity is measured by transient hot wire method and the thermal conductivity of nanofluids is enhanced up to 4.8% as compared to that of base fluids. Moreover, the cooling performance of water/coolant-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids is evaluated using vehicle's engine simulator under the constant RPM condition. The results show that the cooling performance of automobile engine increases up to 5.9% using prepared nanofluids. To investigate the effect of nanofluids on exhaust gas, the $NO_x$ emission is measured during the operation with respect to time and 10.3% of $NO_x$ emission is decreased. The experimental results imply that the water/coolant-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids might be used as a next-generation vehicles' coolant

Nondestructive Characterization of Degradation of EPDM Rubber for Automotive Radiator Hoses (자동차 냉각기 호스용 EPDM고무의 노화에 대한 비파괴 특성평가)

  • Coolant rubber hoses for automobile radiators can be degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under thermal and mechanical loadings. In this study, for EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubber conventionally used as a radiator hose material the aging behaviors of the skin part due to thermo-oxidative and electro-chemical stresses were nondestructively evaluated. Through the thermo-oxidative aging test, it was shown that the surface hardness IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees) of the rubber increased with a considerable reduction of failure strain. On account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin part the weight of rubber specimens degraded by electro-chemical degradation(ECD) test increased, whereas their. failure strain and IRHD hardness decreased largely. The penetration of coolant liquid seemed to induce some changes in inner structure and micro hardness distribution of the rubbers. Consequently, EPDM rubbers degraded by thermo-oxidative aging and ECD could be characterized nondestructively by micro-hardness and chemical structure analysis methods.

Numerical analysis of LNG vaporizer heat transfer characteristic in LNG fuel ship (선박용 액화천연가스 기화기의 열전달 특성의 수치해석)

  • The heat transfer characteristics of LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) vaporizer on the ship was performed by numerical simulation to get the optimum NG(Natural Gas) generating condition. The glycol-water was used for heating in LNG vaporizer, and the cooling water of main engine was used as heating souse for glycol-water. This cooling water temperature increases again after recirculating from the main engine, and then it can be used to heat the glycol-water. The numerical analysis results has good agreement with the experimental results by liquid nitrogen for validation. So CFD technique was used to simulate the heat transfer characteristics of LNG vaporizer on the ship. The numerical results show that the operation condition of LNG vaporizer shows NG temperature of $6^{\circ}C$ in the outlet of LNG vaporizer, and the mass flow rates of LNG and glycol-water were showed 0.111 kg/s and 1.805 kg/s, respectively.

A Study on the Development of a High Resolution Snow Gauge (정밀 강설량계 개발을 위한 연구)

  • This study proposes a new method for automatic recording of snowfall by a mass unit which is required in weather forecast and hydrology research. In this method the weight of a buoyancy bar submerged in a liquid is measured by a strain-gauge loadcell. Field test results of the strain-gauge loadcell showed good stability as well as high accuracy. Indoor tests of the instrument using a large tank of 120 cm diameter and 25 cm height connected to a small tank measured the liquid level with a good stability, showing a measurement error of less than 0.1 mm in a 100 mm range. This method of water depth measurement is very useful in measuring snowfall because it has no limitation on the funnel size of the instrument. In addition, an antifreezing solution instead of water used in the tank makes a heating system for melting snow unnecessary.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are commonly employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and achieving high energy density in the battery has been one of the most critical issues in the automotive industry. Because liquid cooling containing antifreeze is important in automotive batteries to enable cold starts, an effective geometric configuration for high-cooling performance should be carefully investigated. Battery cooling with antifreeze has also been considered to realize successful cold starts. In this article, we theoretically investigate a specific property of an antifreeze cooling battery system, and we perform numerical modeling to satisfy the required thermal specifications. Because a typical battery system in HEVs consists of multiple stacked battery cells, the cooling performance is determined mainly by the special properties of antifreeze in the coolant passage, which dissipates heat generated from the battery cells. We propose that the required cooling performance can be realized by performing numerical simulations of different geometric configurations for battery cooling. Furthermore, we perform a theoretical analysis as a design guideline to optimize the cooling performance with minimum power consumption by the cooling pump.

  • The motor applied to electric water pump used in automobiles is the canned type motor structure. The rotor, which is the driving component of the motor, is located in the bulkhead structure of the plastic injection molding, and rotates while immersed in the antifreeze. Plastic Injection Stator is placed on the outside of the bulkhead structure so that the rotor can rotate. The configuration of the rotor consists of magnet, core and shaft. In the case of magnet and core, it is very important to keep the parts sealed because it is a material that is corroded by moisture. When mounted on a vehicle, it must be capable of driving at $120^{\circ}C$ ambient conditions and should not leak under pressure of 1 bar or more. In this paper, we designed and implemented a Leak inspection automation system using helium to check the defects of the electric water pump developed satisfying this condition.

Effect of Coolant on PEMFC Performance in Low Humidification Condition (저가습 조건에서 냉각 유체의 고분자전해질 연료전지에 대한 영향)

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) performance could be affected by various factors such as cell temperature, total pressure, partial pressure of reactants and relative humidity. Hydrogen ion is combined with water to form hydronium ion [$H_3O^+$] and pass through membrane resulting electricity generation. Cooling system is needed to remove heat and other uses on large scale fuel cell. In case that collant conductivity is increased, fuel cell performance could be decreased because produced electricity could be leaked through coolant. In this study, triple distilled water(TDW) and antifreeze solution containing ethylene glycol was used to observe resistance change. Resistance of TDW was taken 28 days to reach preset value, and effect on fuel cell operation was not observed. Resistance of antifreeze solution was not reached to preset value up to 48 days, but performance failure occurred presumably caused by bipolar plate junction resulting stoppage resistance experiment. Generally PEMFC humidification is performed near-saturated operating conditions at various temperatures and pressures, but non-humidifying condition could be applied in small scale fuel cell to improve efficiency and reduce system cost. However, it was difficult to operate large scale fuel cell without humidifying, especially higher than $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In case of small flux such as 0.78 L/min, temperature difference between inlet and outlet was occurred larger than other cases resulting performance decrease. Non-humidifying performance experiments were done at various cell temperature. When both of anode and cathode humidification were removed, cell performance was strongly depended on cell operating temperature.

An Electrochemical Evaluation on the Crevice Corrosion of 430 Stainless Steel with Variation of Crevice Wide by Micro Capillary Tubing Method (Micro Capillary Tube 방법을 이용한 430 스테인레스강 틈의 폭변화에 따른 틈부식의 전기화학적 평가)

  • In this study, the IR drop theory was adopted to explain the initiation of crevice corrosion in the framework of IR drop in crevice electrolyte. Furthermore, the electrochemical polarization was measured to study the mechanism of crevice corrosion for type STS430 stainless steel. lest method adopts under condition that the size of specimen is $10\times20\times5mm,\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl$ solution, and the artificial crevice gap sizes are three kinds, the Micro capillary tube size is inner diameter 0.04 mm, outer diameter 0.08 mm. Crevice corrosion is measured under the applied voltage of passivation potential -200mV/SCE, resulted from anodic potentio-dynamic polarization to the external surface along the crevice. The potential difference was measured by depth profile by Micro capillary tube which inserted in the crevice. The obtained results of this study showed that 1) As artificial crevice gap size became narrow, the current density was increased, whereas no crevice corrosion was found in the crevice gap size $3\times0.5\times16mm\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl\;solution\;at\;20^{\circ}C$ 2) potential of the crevice was about from -220 to -358mV which is lower than that of external surface potential of -200mV The results so far confirmes that the potential drop(so-called IR drop) in the crevice is one of the major mechanisms the process of crevice corrosion for 430 stainless steel.
