  • The low velocity body was detected during the invesfigation of the crustal structune and upper mantle in the Korean Peninsula using ray method and observational seismic data. We observed the arrival time delays of P and S waves that pass through the Bugok hot spring area and the chugaryong rift zone in the Korean Peninsula. The present geothermal exploration accounts for the high heat flow in these regions, suggesting that the area are the 'delay shadows' produced by a deep, low velocity body(Resenberg et aL, 1980). We tried to verify the hypothesis that the low-velocity body is caused by the partial melting in the lower crust can be explained by the lateral variation(inhomogeneous model) of the lower crust velocity using Ray Method(Cerveny and Psencik, 1983).

  • Geothermal heat flow distribution of Korea is investigated in the light of geophysical data, seismicity, tectonics and gravity as well as heat flow measurements and surface temperature of hot springs. The average heat flow in Korea is found to be $1.65{\mu}cal/cm^2{\cdot}sec$ that is greater than the world's average ($1.5{\mu}cal/cm^2{\cdot}sec$). The high heat flow is located at the regions of high seismicity in Korea. They are found to be Bugok of south central, and Haeundae, Pohang and Dongnae of the southest coast in the Peninsula. The anomalously high heat flow, equal to or greater than $1.93{\mu}cal/cm^2sec$ is found in the Kyongsang Basin, indicating that it is extended from the spreading of the East Sea (Japan Sea) and its origin.

  • Quick lime made from limestone that are deposited abundantly in Korea has excellent potentials for stabilization of clayey soils. If Korea is able to take advantage of its abundant supply, economical efficiency could be achieved through mass production as well as being able to take advantage of utilization of natural resources. For stabilizing of clayey soil with lime, it is necessary to determine the required quantities of lime firstly and to evaluate the degree of stabilization with lime content. In this test, the quantity of lime required for 2 clayey soils which located in Seunggok and Bugok province respectively, and for 2 clay minerals-kaolinite and montmorillonite-were determined by ASTM C 977-92 and were evaluated for solidification of each samples with changing lime contents by Atterberg limit test and pH test. It was also evaluated for the improvement of each sample with lime content and curing time. The sample which added lime content determined by ASTM C 977-92 increased plastic limit, unconfined compression strength, and decreased pH in increasing trend.

  • This study involves 1) air quality disperson predictions and 2) a comparison of the predicted data with the actually measured ones in terms of annual sulfur dioxide concentration in the Ulsan Industial Complex. The prediction was made by utilizing the CDMQC air quality simulation computer model. The higher concentrations were observed at the Bugok Dong (Sampling Site) and the Yeochun Dong Sampling Site with the values of 44 and 46 ppb, respectively whereas the predicted values for both sites were 52 and 47 ppb, respectively. A statistical examination has revealed that the level of confidence was 90.02% from the Chi-squared test and the corelation coefficient was 0.827. It thus demonstrates that the model used for the study appears to be applicable to yield reliable predictions in terms of annual sulfur dioxide concentrations in the study area.

  • The tourism sites and attractions of South Korea in many ways have little specialties in their image due to the local development plan's uniformed way of designing and improving landscape. The lack of specialties in tourist sites and attractions have caused displeasure from the local residents, as the sites don't characterize the locals as attractively and appealingly as is the potential. There have been no research or studies on the scenic effect on tourism or resort development thus producing an urgent call for local authorities to develop planned landscapes of local sites. This study compares Bugok Onchon (hot spring), whose image hardly differentiates itself from the others, with Kinosaki Onsen (hot spring). Bugok Hot Spring, which is the case study of this report, has recorded a steady decline of visitors due to a result of uniformed development planning. In the case of Kinosaki Hot Spring, scenery development, however, has made a breakthrough in tourist increase despite its no-so-easily-accessible location. The study assumes that scenery effects changes in promoting local tourism, thus analyzing and comparing the two hot springs to unearth critical factors in tourist site development, as well as viewing the present state of Bugok Hot Spring for further study. Furthermore, the study provides tourist site developers with a guideline of the two comparative Hot Spring cases. Investigations and analyses are mainly focused on colors, which are important factors in making underlying images of tourist sites, and the comparison of Bugok Hot Spring with Kinosaki Hot Suing. Bugok Hot Spring shows the influences of accent colors as well as a variety of color combinations and similarities of color tones. Kinosaki Hot Spring shows a combination of naturally-generated colors its own scenic beauty by trimming the landscape. Through the comparative study of the two hot springs, Bugok (boulevard) uncovers a typical case of Korean local landscape planning, even with the well-known tourist attraction 'Bugok-Hawaii', and calls upon a new, serious landscape-improvement plan to increase visitors.
