  • This paper describes the parachute dynamics modeling and simulation results for the development of training simulator of a HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) parachute, which is currently in use for military purposes. The target parachute is a rectangular shaped parafoil and its dynamic model is derived based on the real geometry data as the 9-DOF nonlinear equations of dynamics. The simulation was conducted through the moment of inertia and its aerodynamic derivatives to reflect the real characteristics based on the MATLAB/Simulink. In particular, its modeling includes the typical characteristics of the added mass and moment of inertia, which is shown in the strong effects in Lighter-Than-Air(LTA) flight vehicle. The proposed dynamic modeling was evaluated through the simulation under the spiral turning flight conditions of the asymmetric control inputs and compared with the performance index in the target parachute manual.

  • Dynamic response analysis is conducted for a floating bridge subjected to multiple support earthquake excitation. The floating bridge used in this study is supported by discrete floating pontoons and horizontal pretension cables supported at both ends of the bridge. The bridge is modeled with finite elements and the hydrodynamic added mass and added damping due to the surrounding fluid around pontoons are obtained using boundary elements. During the analysis the concept of retardation function is utilized to consider the frequency dependency of the hydrodynamic coefficients. Multiple support excitation is introduced at both ends of the bridge and the time history response is compared to that of a simultaneous excitation. The results show that the multiple support excitation yields larger values in some responses. for example in cable tensions. than the sumultaneous excitation.

  • When a body enters waters, its original kinetic energy or momentum is distributed among the body and surrounding water in the form of added mass. Due to the transfer of the energy or momentum, the bode is subjected to the hydrodynamic impact forces and acceleration. This impact behavior can be an important criterion of submersible vehicle launched to the air. In this paper, based on Life-boat model, an approximate method is proposed for the evaluation of the forces and responses of cylindrical rigid bode by water entry impact. The impact forces are calculated by yon Karman's momentum theory and motion responses the body, especially acceleration, are calculated by a numerical integration of the motion equations derived by hydrodynamic force equilibrium. The proposed method is expected to be a simple but efficient tool lot the preliminary design or motion analysis of a body subjected to water entry impact.

  • A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used in many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. Many authors have studied vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tanks structures containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls through fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the present paper, coupling effect between panels of tank structure on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region have investigated numerically and experimentally.

  • An approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating hydrodynamic forces acting on oscillating inner cylinder in concentric annulus. When the rigid inner cylinder executes translational oscillation, fluid inertia and damping forces on the oscillating cylinder are generated by unsteady pressure and viscous skin friction. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow and the added mass coefficient of inviscid fluid, these hydrodynamic forces including viscous effect are dramatically simplified and expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number and the geometry of annular configuration. Thus, the viscous effect on the forces can be estimated very easily compared to an existing theory. The forces are calculated by two models developed for relatively high and low oscillatory Reynolds numbers. The model for low oscillatory Reynolds number is suitable for relatively high ratio of the penetration depth to annular space while the model for high oscillatory Reynolds number is applicable to the case of relatively low ratio. It is found that the transient ratio between two models is approximately 0.2~0.25 and the forcea are expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number, explicity. The present results show good agreements with an existing numerical results, especially for high and low penetration ratios to annular gap.

In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the previous report, A numerical tool of vibration analysis of a 3-dimensional tank is developed by using finite element method for plates and boundary element method for fluid region. In this paper, the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region and mode characteristics in accordance with changing breadth of the plates are investigated numerically and discussed.

  • It is important in design of vertical pumps to consider external excitation in addition to rotor vibration due to unbalance. In this study, a model of a vertical pump was developed for the analysis of its dynamic response. The vertical pump was modeled with lumped masses and springs which represent multi-cylindrical and rotor structure. A dynamic simulation program was developed and numerical calculation on the above mentioned problems were carried out.

  • An analytical method for the free vibration of a flexible rectangular plate in contact with water is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate clamped along the edges is partially contacted with water at both sides. It is assumed that the contained water is incompressible and inviscid. The wet mode shape of the plate is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of a clamped beam. The liquid motion is described by using the liquid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the liquid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict excellently the fluid-coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.

  • The transmission coefficients of impermeable submerged breakwater on permeable bottom are computed numerically using a boundary element method. The analysis method is based on the wave pressure function with the continuity in the analytical region including fluid and structures. Wave motion over permeable bottom is simulated by introducing a linear dissipation coefficient and an added mass coefficient. The results indicate that the wave over permeable bottom travels being damped, and that transmission coefficients for permeable bottom are smaller than those for impermeable bottom, and result from the change of width and height of submerged breakwater.

  • Reflection coefficients of wave due to the types of a submerged breakwater on the inclined incident wave are numerically computed by using boundary element method. The analysis method is based on the wave pressure function with the continuity in the analytical region including fluid and structures. When compared with the existing results on the inclined incident wave, the results of this study show good agreement. It is found that both maximum and minimum values of the reflection coefficient are appeared frequently, as the width of a submerged breakwater becomes wider, and the reflection coefficient increase, as the wave period is longer. In addition, the effect on the reflection coefficient due to the change of submerged breakwater hight is lager than that due to the change of submerged breakwater width. The results indicate that dissipating characteristics of wave due to the types of a submerged breakwater own high dependability regarding the change of inclined incident waves. Therefore, the results of this study is estimated to be applied as an accurate numerical analysis referring to inclined incident waves in real sea.
