  • Obejectives : To investigate the clinical effect of electroacupuncture and bee venom acupuncture for benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) symptoms. Methods : Among 39 outpatients who were treated at a BPH clinic, 8 were finally selected for analysis by charts-review, retrospectively. They were treated by electroacupuncture and bee venom acupuncture more than 3 times. We estimated the effectiveness of the treatments by using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) questionnaire and checking their nocturia frequency. On the basis of these variables, we analyzed the statistical significations of symptom improvements. Results : Among 8 patients, the IPSS and nocturia frequency showed significant improvement after the final treatment compared with baseline (P = .0078, P = .0078). The IPSS significantly decreased even after the 1st treatment and also after the 2nd treatment compared with the baseline (P = .0078, P = .0078). The IPSS at post final-treatment, post 1st- and post 2nd treatment also showed significant improvement compared with IPSS at baseline in 6 severe symptomatic patients(P = .031, P = .031, P = .031). Nocturia frequency decreased after the 1st treatment compared with baseline and showed significant improvement between baseline and post 2nd treatment (P = .0078). Conclusions : In a retrospective and cross-sectional study investigating the clinical effects of electroacupuncture and bee venom acupuncture on BPH, these treatments proved to have significant therapeutic effects, particularly for various symptoms involving frequent nocturia.

  • Objectives: We investigated the current status of the consent form for bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy, which is using in Korean medicine hospitals. We suggest the development of a standard informed consent form. Method: Through the questionnaire survey, status of using informed consent form was identified at 24 Korean medicine hospitals. We analyze different types of informed consent form, which was developed by each hospitals. We investigated the types of informed consent forms for various medical procedures through electronic searches. A standard informed consent form for bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy was developed based on the medical law and the standard informed consent form for medical procedures developed by Korea Fair Trade Mediation Agency. Result: In our survey, 65% of the hospitals do not use consent well, only 35% of the hospitals use informed consent form, and the most hospitals use self-developed informed consent form. As a result of analyzing the contents of informed consent form used in each hospitals, the explanation of diagnosis, treatment precautions, suggestions for other treatments, consequences of not performing the scheduled procedure, possibility of treatment change was insufficient. 48% of hospitals manage consent in recording on a chart, 39% in scanned documents, and 13% in digital electronic consent form. Conclusion: A standard informed consent form for Bee-venom pharmacopuncture therapy include diagnosis, effectivness, necessity, indications, method, skin reaction test, hypersensitivity questionnaire, treatment precautions, possible hypersensitivity reactions and countermeasures, suggestions for other treatments, consequences of not performing the scheduled procedure, possibility of treatment change and the name of doctor.

Methods : From September 1st, 2005 to December 31st, 2005, the 60 patients who had visited Conmaul oriental medical hospital with acute ankle sprain were sample into 2 groups for this study; one group for the bee-venom acupuncture therapy combined with needle acupuncture therapy and the other group for needle acupuncture therapy only at least 3 times respectively. Both group had been treated with same additional infrared lamp, physical therapy and ankle supporter during the whole treatment period. Among 60 patients, 20 participants satisfied the whole inclusion criteria. To estimate the efficacy of treatments, Numerical Rating System(NRS) and Ankle-Hindfoot Scale(AHS) were applied before 1st and 4th treatment. Each score results were analysed and compared by Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed rank test with the level of 5% significance. Result : The NRS score in bee-venom acupuncture therapy group was increased significantly and the AHS score in bee-venom therapy group was decreased significantly compared to each of single acupuncture therapy group(P<0.01). The score change comparisons between the two groups had no significance before and after the treatment. Conclusion : Both bee-venom acupuncture therapy and single acupuncture therapy were effective to treat the acute ankle sprain. but there were no significant data to prove that bee-venom acupuncture therapy is more effective than single acupuncture therapy.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the clinical effects of a combination of Gamiguibi-tang and sweet bee venom on a patient with Raynaud's disease. Methods: The patient with Raynaud's disease was treated with Gamiguibi-tang three times a day for 43 days and with sweet bee venom daily. The effects on Raynaud's disease were measured on both hands using a cold stress test and an infrared thermometer and by digital infrared thermographic imaging and a NRS (Numeric Rating Scale). We conducted the cold stress test at 6-8 day intervals from 2016.04.27 to 2016.06.08. Results: After treatment, the symptoms of pain were decreased in both hands and digital infrared thermographic imaging (DITI) confirmed a rise in the temperature of the fingers. The fingertip temperature increased from 29.6 to 30.4 degrees and the cooling/rewarming ratio (CRR) increased steadily. No adverse events were found at discharge. Conclusions: Gamiguibi-tang combined sweet bee venom may improve symptoms in patients with Raynaud's disease.
