Well designed group bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through the bearing mechanism until the occurrence of shear rupture in the bolt or in the connecting plate. This excellent ductility can be utilized in favor of economical connection design. In this study, comprehensive tests on single-bolt bearing connections were conducted and analyzed considering bearing boundary conditions. The primary objective was to propose a generalized bearing strength and load-deformation relationship that can be used for designing group-bolted connections. To this end, new bearing strength formula, deformation limits as well as new load-deformation relationship were first proposed. Especially the proposed load-deformation relationship can reflect the stiffness, strength, and geometrical boundary conditions of the joint. The proposed formula and relationship are validated based on test results.

The analysis and results of flexural behavior for steel composite beam with built-up cross-section considering bolt deformation are presented in this paper. The bolt deformation and the restrict effect due to bolt-connection and friction are considered to investigate the flexural behavior of steel composite beam. Nonlinear spring element in ABAQUS is used to consider bolt deformation, also the results are compared with those in case bolt deformations are ignored. The displacement, bending stresses and shear stresses are calculated by F.E. model, and these results are compared with the analytical value of no interaction beam, partial interaction beam and full interaction beam. As a result of analysis, the behavior of composite beam is more dependant on the composite rate than the friction of the steel. When the composite rate is more than 50%, the behavior of composite beam considering the effects of bolt deformation is similar to that of fully composite beam.

Well-designed bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through bearing mechanism until the occurrence of bolt shear rupture. The ultimate strength analysis of eccentric bolted connections is an economical and mechanistic approach which uses such ductility. However, the bolt load-deformation relationship, which forms basis of the current practice, is based on very limited combinations of bolt and steel materials. The primary objective of this study was to establish the general bolt force-deformation relationship based on systematic single-bolt bearing connection tests. The test results showed that the projected area of the bolt hole and the strength and thickness of the plate to be connected are the main factors affecting the force-deformation relationship. The results of this study can be used for the instantaneous center of rotation method (ICRM) to achieve more accurate analysis and economical design of a variety of group-bolted connections subjected to eccentric shear.
This study is to consider applicability of spiral bolt strain gauge as an instrument measuring behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope. When the instrument was installed on the ground, it can be useful to identify the state of ground behavior because it has the characteristics of flexibility, as well as to apply the ground reinforcement because it has higher pull-out resistance to the ground. From the measurement of behavior to soft ground foundation, the strain shows a stable state in the beginning, then was observed significant change in the upper and the middle of spiral bolt strain gauge after 400 days. This is analyzed that ground loosening, which is due to occurred frequent earthquake of magnitude 1~2 with increased rainfall, lead to the instability of the ground. From the measurement of behavior to rock slope, the strain shows a stable state with very little change in a period of 0~50 days and the biggest strain at 4.2 m (P6) in a period of 50~100 days, then other places except P6 was maintained at a stable state in a period of 100~160 days. The reason is analyzed because that blasting for excavated limestone surrounding was affected to the largest at P6. However, based on the size of strain change by behavior of the soft ground foundation and rock slope, it is considered that the present condition are not effected on stability of retaining structure and rock slope. In conclusion, the proposed spiral bolt strain gauge can be useful to measure behavior of soft ground foundation and rock slope, and also to be measured behavior as well as reinforcement of the target ground.
This study is aiming at investigating the ultimate behaviors and curling influence on the ultimate strength in high strength aluminum alloys (7075-T6) single shear two-bolted connections using finite element analysis. The validation of finite element analysis for predicting the ultimate behaviors was verified through the comparison between previous test results and analysis predictions. Strength reduction due to curling occurrence was estimated quantitatively. Parametric analyses with extended variables were conducted and the conditions of curling occurrence according to end distance and edge distance were suggested. Finally, modified equation was suggested considering curling influence on the ultimate strength of aluminum alloys 7075-T6 bolted connections.

The hole for the insertion of the pin in the shank is exist at ball joint connection of the space frame. It brings about the brittle fracture caused by stress concentration. Consequently it cannot expect the deformation performance or energy absorption performance from ball joint connection. In this study we developed a new connection details which will increase the plastic deformation performance at ball joint connection and can absorb the error in construction, which expect the plastic deformation performance at the reduced shank without brittle fracture at the screw of bolt and pin. Also it's capacity is verified by the performance in numerical analysis and test. We confirmed bolt's plastic deformantion performance through controled shank and pin's area.

Rock bolt is one of the most important supports for tunnelling to prevent excessive ground relaxation at the primary tunnel excavation stage. It forms a ground arch band by confining the ground around a tunnel. Rock bolt has various effects, such as support or hanging effect, internal pressure effect, arching effect, ground improvement effect etc. Most studies on rock bolt focused on the concept of support, but only a few researches on the ground reinforcing effect by pre-tensioning a rock bolts. In this study, large scale model tests are performed to investigate the ground reinforcing effect of rock bolts for regularly jointed rocks. Simple beam model was built to find out the reinforcing effect of jointed rocks, which was reinforced by pre-tensioned rock bolts. Settlement of model beam was analyzed through measuring its sagging for various installation intervals.

The ultimate behavior of high-tension bolted joints with various plate thickness and bolt size is investigated using nonlinear F.E. analysis and experimental study. The relation with sliding load, bolt deformation, and failure modes are presented based on plate thickness and bolt size. Three kinds of the bolt diameter(M20, M22, M24) and five types of the steel plates (l2mm, 16mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm) are considered for the ultimate behavior of the bolted joints. The numerical model, constructed by commercial F.E. program, ABAQUS, of ultimate behavior of bolted joints is introduced and verified by experimental results. The force-displacement and force-axial strain relations are measured and compared with the results by 3D finite element analysis.
