  • The use of face bolt method has been increasing abroad recently. Hence, many tests and measurements are being conducted and reported. Also, it is well hewn that determination of the installation number of foe bolts in the design stage is very difficult due to difference of the ground condition and the type of a bolt to be used. First of all, the type, the number, etc. of bolts used in various tunnel construction sites, investigated, are analyzed. The relationship between bolt and ground condition could not be found because bolts have been used with the other support methods in many cases. In the laboratory test and numerical analysis based on the site investigation, the behavior of ground and pipes installed on the tunnel face to support has been examined. Especially, the installed number is focused on. According to the result of tests, the surface settlement and the axial displacement of the face decrease exponentially as the number of installed bolts increases.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of examinating the safety and economical efficiency of large high tension bolted joints. The specimen using F10T-M30 large high strength bolts has been selected and static tensile test has been conducted to evaluate the slip characteristics. In addition, finite element analysis has been carried out to estimate the number of required bolts. As a result, the average slip coefficient of M30 high strength bolts exceeded 0.4 - the standard in highway bridge design specification - and has satisfied the slip strength, which is the same as that of M22 high strength bolts. In addition, if F13T-M22 high strength bolts were applied, the number of required bolts decreased by 21%, and if F10T-M30 high strength bolts were applied, the number of required bolts decreased by 46%, that leads to the conclusion that the economical efficiency in accordance with diametering of high strength bolts was now verified.

  • In the construction of row-rise steel buildings, double angle connection can be considered as one of most effective connection types. Its connection flexibility depends mainly on several parameters such as angle thickness, bolt gage distance, and number of bolts. To establish the effect of the variation of the number of bolts on the moment-rotation relationship, three experimental tests have been conducted in this research. Based on the results of each experimental test, the rotational stiffness of each angle specimen can be calculated by performing regression analysis. Considering the results of regression analysis, we concluded that the more the number of bolts used in double angle connection, the higher the rotational stiffness as one can expected.

  • Cyclic loading tests for beam-to-column weak-axis connections were performed to investigate the seismic performance. In this study, the connections were developed to improve the constructability on the basis of investigation for existing small-size steel structures. The primary test parameter is the number of high-tension bolts which are used to connect steel beam and column using exterior and interior flange plates. Test results showed that the number of bolts had a significant effect on the cyclic behavior of beam-column weak-axis connections. From the analysis of test results, it is concluded that more than four bolts in the connections can satisfy the requirements of semi-rigid connection presented in current design codes. All of specimens showed the bearing failure around bolt holes and fracture at the beam flange. However, when the web height and the flange width is relatively small, the number of the bolts used in the connections might be limited. Thus, the additional research in this area is needed.

  • To analyze the behavior of multiple bolted connection with analytical method, there was a major problem in terms of the number of bolt as two. Multiple bolted connection is wrong in other way, that is impossible to analyze the behavior of connection with various types. So the numerical analysis model was developed to analyze the behavior of connection with various types, and to overcome the limitation of number of bolt. The optimum values for analysis the behavior of multiple bolted connection with numerical methods were obtained as, r=0.35, Kx=137.5, and Ky=257.4. The numerical analysis method was developed in this study showed high efficiency for the existing methods in the behavior analysis of connection.

  • During installation of face bolts, they are often deviated from the designed horizontal direction. In this study, a laboratory test and numerical analysis were conducted to examine the change of support effect by them. Also, the number of bolts to be added for achieving the designed support effect was considered. It was verified in this study that the horizontal installation is more effective. Under the test condition of this study, 1.5 bolts/section should be added in the face of which the installation density was 3 bolts/section when the bolts were installed with $R15^{\circ}$ angle from the horizontal position.

  • This paper presents a novel convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for predicting bolt clamping force in the early bolt loosening state of bolted structures. The approach entails tightening eight bolts with different clamping forces and generating frequency responses, which are then used to create a similarity map. This map quantifies the magnitude and shape similarity between the frequency responses and the initial model in a fully fastened state. Krylov subspace-based model order reduction is employed to efficiently handle the large amount of frequency response data. The CNN model incorporates a regression output layer to predict the clamping forces of the bolts. Its performance is evaluated by training the network by using various amounts of training data and convolutional layers. The input data for the model are derived from the magnitude and shape similarity map obtained from the frequency responses. The results demonstrate the diagnostic potential and effectiveness of the proposed approach in detecting early bolt loosening. Accurate bolt clamping force predictions in the early loosening state can thus be achieved by utilizing the frequency response data and CNN model. The findings afford valuable insights into the application of CNNs for assessing the integrity of bolted structures.

  • Double angle connections are commonly used for the construction of the low-rise steel framed buildings. Several experimental tests lave been conducted to investigate the effect of the number of bolts on the rotational stiffness of a double angle connection. Several parameters are obtained by performing regression analysis. An analytical model has been introduced to calculate the initial stiffness of a double angle connection in this research.
