  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate the damage location in the composite panel by extracting the elastic wave signal reflected from the damaged area. The guided elastic wave is generated by a piezoelectric actuator and sensed by a piezoelectric sensor. The proposed algorithm adopts a diagnostic approach. It compares the non-damaged signal with the damaged signal, and extract damage information along with sensor network and lamb wave group velocity estimated by signal correlation. However, it is difficult to clearly distinguish the damage location due to the nonlinear properties of lamb wave and complex information composed of various signals. To overcome this difficulty, the cumulative summation feature vector algorithm(CSFV) and a visualization technique are newly proposed in this paper. CSFV algorithm finds the center position of the damage by converting the signals reflected from the damage to the area of distance at which signals reach, and visualization technique is applied that expresses feature vectors by multiplying damage indexes. Experiments are performed for a composite panel and comparative study with the existing algorithms is carried out. From the results, it is confirmed that the damage location can be detected by the proposed algorithm with more reliable accuracy.

  • This paper is the study on random, sinusoidal and shock vibration responses for the STSAT-3(science and technology satellite-3) proto-model which is the first small size all-composite satellite in Korea. The structure system of the STSAT-3 forms box type structure by joining several hybrid sandwich panels comprised of honeycomb core and carbon fiber reinforced laminated composite skins on both side. Mode shape, stress, displacement and acceleration responses are obtained on both the frequency domain and time domain by means of a commercial FEA software MSC/NASTRAN. From these analysis results, failure, safety factor and design validity are assessed. These results can be successfully applicable as reference data when a new satellite is developed as well as giving out an excellent criteria in satellite vibration treatment design.

  • In this study, a grid panel structure in which the woven CFRP composites were stacked in the orthogonal array was proposed and the mechanical properties were analyzed and studied. The grid parts were fabricated by cutting prepregs and laminating them. The grid panel structure was fabricated by co-curing with lower laminate plate in auto-clave process. The behavior of the proposed grid panel structure was evaluated by tests under tensile, compressive, shear, and bending loads. The effect of increasing the stiffness of the orthogonal grid structure was verified through these tests. In addition, the finite element model was constructed and compared with the test results, confirming the validity and reliability of the test and analysis.

  • In this paper, the sandwich panel composites consisting of core material and face sheet were studied to evaluate the mechanical properties, noise level and fire resistance including flammability, smoke, and toxicity. Four types of sandwich panel were prepared using various kinds of panel and honeycomb materials. It was observed that Al honeycomb/Al skin composite materials had the excellent flatwise tensile strength and edgewise compressive strength compared with other types of composites. The flatwise compressive strength and flexural strength of Nomex honeycomb/Al skin composite were higher than those of other composites. PMI form/Al skin composite showed the higher core shear strength and facing bending strength. From the experimental results of flame resistance tests, it can be said that the phenol based skin composite has the excellent flame retardation properties, which are similar to those of the commercial skin composites.

  • For the aerothermoelastic analysis of cylindrical piezolaminated shells, geometrically nonlinear finite elements based on the multi-field layerwise theory hale been developed. Applying a Han Krumhaar's supersonic piston theory, supersonic flutter analyses are performed for the cylindrical piezolaminted shells subject to thermal stresses and deformations. The possibility to increase flutter boundary and reduce thermoelastic deformations of piezolaminated panels is examined using piezoelectric actuations. Results show that active piezoelectric actuations can effectively increase the critical aerodynamic pressure by retarding the coalescence of flutter modes and compensating thermal stresses.

  • In this study, we fabricated jute fiber reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite in the form of sandwich panel structure which includes core foam of chopped jute fiber reinforced PLA and outer skin layer of continuous glass fiber reinforced PLA. Flexural properties of the composite were assessed for different jute fiber weight fractions. Density of the core foam ranged from 0.31 to 0.67 $g/cm^3$ and void content fraction 0.51 to 0.71. The maximum flexural strength was 92.7 MPa at 12.5 wt.% of jute fiber content, and the maximum flexural modulus was 7.58 GPa at 30.0 wt.%. Cost analysis was also conducted. The cost to enhance the flexural strength of the applied structure was estimated to be $0.010USD/m^3/MPa$ for 12.5 wt.% fiber content.

  • This paper studied the AE(acoustic emission) characteristics of the laminated composite structures. The composite stiffened panels under the compressive loading emitted various AE signals when they buckled or changed the buckling modes. In addition, the failure initiated and propagation generated a lot of complex signals. From the continuous signal generation. we identified when the failures initiated and whether they propagated or not. The single lap joint of laminated plates under tensional load also generated AE signals when bonding region failed. The first failure occurrence and its propagation are monitored by generated AE signals. The characteristics of AE signals used in this analysis are cumulative hits, hit distribution, peak frequency of generated AE waveform and amplitude of signals. The analysis of AE signals shows that continuous increment of cumulative hits can be regarded as damage propagation and three dominant peak frequencies can correspond to typical failure modes in the laminated composites.

  • This paper introduces a new theory, that in a stiffened plate, a steel stiffener could be substituted a composite material in order to prevent from buckling. Changing a steel stiffener into a composite material would not only preclude welding, but could also prevent damage to the material due to fatigue and corrosion.A composite material is assumed to adhere to a steel plate, and is never separated from the plate until the steel plate reaches buckling.Such plate has variable shapes, with different lengths and widths, and also shows an anisotropic material property. LUSAS, a commercial finite element analysis package, was used in the buckling analysis. This paper investigated buckling behavior in anisotropic composite plates with variable parameters.

  • The objective of this research is to study the mechanical and vibration characteristics of vibration damping aluminum panels for automotive parts. For this purpose, the test and simulation results of aluminum-resin hybrid materials and aluminum sheet materials were compared. Tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid material were approximately 10% lower than aluminum sheet. Also, it was showed that the hybrid material have lower natural frequency than aluminum sheet, and it was confirmed that loss factor increases as the thickness of resin increases. Finally, it is confirmed that the test results and the analysis results are similar with each other and the performance prediction of the materials are possible by FEA.
