In this paper, the thermal insulator structure of a real rocket which is fabricated in a way that laminated composite rings are connected in series is analyzed using 3-dimensional axisymmetric finite element models. Simulation of cowl zone using a real operating conditions provides that the stress distribution in the laminated composite ring is largely influenced by ply-angles, axial dimensions, and boundary conditions. Notably the plylift that is the precursor to the wedge-out occurs in the ring-to-ring bonding region. It is hypothesized that after the plylift the wedge is dropped out due to the shear stresses in the ply-angle direction and axial compressive stresses.

The main objectives of this research are to experimently explain the drilling mechanism for the production of bad holes and good holes during the drilling operation, to investigate how a wide range of drilling parameter affect composite laminate strength reduction, and to find which type of test provides the greatest interrogation of notched composite laminates. To achieve these objectives, a bulk of test specimens have been drilled with 5 different drilling parameters and tested with compressive, tensile, and flexural loads. It was found that the drilling parameters had a measurable effect on specimen hole quality as measured by static strength. The specimens, which were well supported, which had the higher spindle speed and lower feed rate, and which were well clamped gave the best hole qualities. The flexural test results presented the most clear and consistent failure strengths relating to the drilling parameters and associated hole quality.
The objective of this research is to develop the impact monitoring techniques providing impact identification and damage diagnostics of smart composite laminates susceptible to impacts. This can be implemented simultaneously by using the acoustic waves by the impact loads and the acoustic emission waves from damage. In the previous research, we have discussed the impact location detection process in which impact generated acoustic waves are detected by PZT using the improved neural network paradigm. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and the Wavelet Transform (WT) on the determination of the occurrence and the estimation of damage.
The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.
Z-section composite stringers with various lengths and flange-widths are tested in axial compression for the validation of a finite element algorithm to calculate the buckling and crippling stresses of composite laminated stringers. The stacking sequence considered is $[{\pm}45/0/90]s$. Strain gages are attached to each specimen, and deflection and end-shortening are obtained by two LVDTs. The buckling load is determined from the load vs. strain response, load vs. end-shortening curves, and load vs. out-of-plane deflection curves. The ultimate stress after local buckling is used as the crippling stress. Comparison between finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in the local buckling and crippling stresses.
The use of advanced composite materials in main structures of military and civil aircraft has been increased rapidly because of their considerable metals in high specific strength and stiffness. However, the mechanical properties of composite materials may severely degrade in the presence of damage. Especially, the high-velocity impact such as a hailstorm, and a small piece of tire or stone during high taxing, can cause considerable damage to the structures and sub-system in spite of a very small mass. However, it is not easy to detect the damage in composite plates using a single sensor or any conventional methods. In this paper, the PVDF sensors and AE sensors were used for monitoring high-velocity impact damage initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The WT(wavelet transform) is used to decompose the sensor signals. In the PVDF sensor and AE sensor signal analysis, amounts of high-frequency signals are increased when the impact energy is increased. PVDF sensor and AE sensor signal appeared similar results. This study shows how various sensing techniques can be used to characterize high-velocity impact damage of advanced composite laminates.
Crippling stress and failure behavior of Z-section graphite/epoxy composite laminated stringers are investigated by the nonlinear finite element method. Stringers are idealized using 9-node laminated shell element. The complete unloading model is introduced into the finite element method for the progressive failure analysis. A modified Riks method is used to trace the post-failure equilibrium path after local buckling. Finite element results are validated with previous experimental results. The results show that the most important parameter affecting the crippling stress of Z-section stringers is the flange width. In terms of stacking sequence. the highest cripping stress is found at the stringer with $[{\pm}45/0/90]s$ lamination.

Because the attenuation of AE signal in composite materials is relatively higher than that of metallic materials, it is required to develop a damage assessment technique less affected by the attenuation property of composite materials in order to use AE sensing as a damage detection method. In the signal processing procedure, it is profitable to use the leading wave that arrives first because the leading wave is less influenced by the boundary conditions. Using wavelet transform, we investigated the frequency characteristics of impact induced AE signals focused on the leading wave in advance and chose the key factors to discriminate the damaged condition quantitatively. In this research, we established a damage assessment technique using the sharing percentage of the wavelet detail components of AE signal, and conducted a low-velocity impact test on composite laminates to confirm the feasibility of the proposed signal processing method.
In this study, the effects of ring stiffeners for buckling of cylindrical shells with composite materials were analyzed. The finite element method was used: 3-D beam elements were used for stiffeners and flat shell elements were used for cylindrical shells and were improved by introducing a substitute shear strain. The ring stiffeners were of the transverse rib type. The buckling behaviors of the cylindrical shells were analyzed based on various parameters, such as locations and sizes of stiffeners, diameter/length ratios and boundary conditions of shells, and fiber-reinforced angles. Effective reinforcement was examined by understanding the exact behaviors for buckling. The results of the analysis may serve as references for designs and future investigations.
