  • In this study, when the applied directions of tensile loading is changed fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic composite laminates was discussed. Low cycle fatigue tests of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates and $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates were carried out. Material systems used were AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates differed from that of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates appeared differently according to the kind of matrix. Critical values of strain energy release rate were obtained by using the strain measured at the initiation of delamination. The experimental results agreed well with the results obtained by the proposed method for determining strain energy release rate.

  • The electrical conductivity of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP's) has been improved by indium-tin oxide (ITO) nano-particle coating on carbon fibers for the purpose of lightning strike protection of composite fuselage skins. ITO nano-particles were coated on the surface of carbon fibers by spraying the colloidal suspension with 10~40% ITO content. The electrical conductivity of the CFRP has been increased more than three times after ITO coating, comparable to or higher than that of B-787 composite fuselage skins with metal wire-meshes on the outer surface, without sacrificing the tensile property due to the existence of nano-particles at fiber-matrix interface. The damage area by the simulated lightning strike was also verified for different materials and conditions by using ultrasonic C-scan image. As the electrical conductivity of 40% nano-ITO coated sample surpass that of the B-787 sample, the damage area by lightning strike also appeared comparable to that of the materials currently employed for composite fuselage construction.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic laminates under tensile loading in different directions. Low cycle fatigue tests of [0/-60/+60]a laminates and [+30/-30/90]s lamina tes were carried out. Material systems used are AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of [+30/-30/90]s is very different from that of [0/-60/+60]s. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS$/PEEK laminates were differentiated by the matrix difference that is, we suppose, the value of both GIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-I) and GIIIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-III) difference.

  • This study dealt with the manufacturing process of self-healing microcapsules for damage repair in polymeric composites. The microcapsule was consisted with a DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) as the healing agent and a urea-formaldehyde resin as the wall section. The size distribution of microcapsules were measured by a particle size analyzer using a laser diffraction technique. Thermal stability of microcapsules was investigated by using a TGA under continuous and isothermal heating conditions. According to the results, these microcapsules were verified to be to thermally stable and have a great potential to be applicable for damage repair in polymeric composites.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

  • In this paper, the progressive damage of an orthogonal grid shell fabricated with plain weave fabric CFRP under bending load was investigated. The orthogonal grids were cured with the bottom composite shell. Progressive damage analysis of an orthogonal grid shell under bending was performed using nonlinear finite element method with Hashin-Rotem failure criterion and Matzenmiller-Lubliner-Taylor(MLT) model. In addition, the three - point bending test for the structure was carried out and the test results were compared with the analysis results. The comparison results of the strain and displacement agreed well. The damage area estimated by the progressive damage analysis were compared with the visual inspection and ultrasonic non-destructive inspection.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) ran be very effectively applied to locate the damaged area in large structures by detecting the elastic waves generated during the damage process within solids. Source location in the composite structures has been, however, extremely difficult due to the acoustic anisotropy with the velocity dependence on fiber orientations. In this study, it has been shown that a newly proposed method for 2-D source location of anisotropic structures is practically applicable to the real structure. The method employes wave velocities obtained with different velocities from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$ for a filament wound composite pressure vessel under the air-filled and the water-filled conditions.
