In this study, the vibration analysis and modal tests of cylindrical composite shells which are manufactured with various stacking sequences in present laboratory were conducted under the free-free and clamped-clamped boundary conditions. Natural frequencies and mode shapes of these specimens were experimentally obtained and their results are compared with theoretical and FEM results. Both results are in good agreement, which confirm the usefulness of proposed manufacturing method for cylindrical composite shells.

The problem ofinstability of laminated circular cylindrical shell under the action of torsio or lateral pressure is investigated. The analysis is based on the Sander's theory for finite deformations of thin shell. The buckling is elastic for thin compoisite shell nad the geometry is assumed to be free of initial imperfections. The equilibrium equations are obrained by usitn the p[erturbation technique. Solution procedure is based on the Galerkin mehtod. The computer program for numerical results is made for several stacking sequence, length-to-radius ratio, and radius-to-thickness ratio. The numerical results of buckling load are present.

The optimal design for stiffened laminate composite cylindrical shells under combined loads is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The optimal design is accomplished with the CONMIN. several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the optimal design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stringers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments. Rectangular or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened laminate composite cylindrical shells.

The objective of this paper is to predict the buckling pressure of a composite cylindrical shell using buckling formulas (ASME 2007, NASA SP 8007) and finite element analysis. The model in this study uses a stacking angle of [0/90]12t and USN 125 composite material. All specimens were made using a prepreg method. First, finite element analysis was conducted, and the results were verified through comparison with the hydrostatic pressure buckling experiment results. Second, the values obtained from the buckling formula and the buckling pressure values obtained from the finite element analysis were compared as the stacking angle was changed in $5^{\circ}$ increments from $20^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. The linear and nonlinear results of the finite element analysis were consistent with the results of the experiment, with a safety factor of 0.85-1. Based on the above result, the ASME 2007 formula, a simplified version of the NASA SP-8007 formula, is regarded as a buckling formula that provides a reliable safety factor.

We propose an accurate and efficient estimation method of transverse shear stresses for analysis and design of laminated composite structures by 4-node quadrilateral degenerated shell elements. To get proper distributions of transverse shear stresses in each layer, we use 3-dimensional equilibrium equations instead of constitutive equations with shear correction factors which vary diversely according to the shapes of shell sections. Three dimensional equilibrium equations are integrated through the thickness direction with complete polynomial membrane stress fields, which are recovered by REP (Recovery by Equilibrium in Patches) recovery method. The 4-node quadrilateral degenerated shell element used in this paper has drilling degrees of freedom and shear stresses derived from assumed strain fields that are set up at natural coordinate systems. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed estimation method attains reasonable accuracy and efficiency compared with other methods and FE analysis using 4-node degenerated shell elements.

The minimum weight design for simply-supported isotropic or symmetrically laminated stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to various loads (axial compression or combined loads) is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The minimum weight design in accomplished with the CONMIN optimizer by Vanderplaats. Several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the minimum weight design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stingers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments, and general, panel and local skin buckling including stiffener rolling. The approach allows the consideration of various shapes of stiffening members. Rectangular, I, or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened cylindrical shells. Several design examples are analyzed and compared with those in the previous literatures. The unstiffened glass/epoxy, graphite/epoxy(T300/5208), and graphite/epoxy aluminum honeycomb cylindrical shells and stiffened graphite/epoxy cyindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed through the present approach.

A finite element program using degenerated shell element was developed to solve the geometric, material and combined nonlinear behaviors of composite laminated shell. The total Lagrangian method was implemented for geometric nonlinear analysis. The material nonlinear behavior was analyzed by considering the matrix degradation due to the progressive failure in the matrix and matrix-fiber interface after initial failure. The result of the geometric nonlinear analysis showed good agreement with the other exact and numerical solutions. The results of the combined analyses considered both geometric and material nonlinear analyses were compared with the experiments in which internal pressure was applied to the filament wound antisymmetric tubes.

The results of an experimental and analytical study of composite pressure hull on buckling pressure are presented for LRN 300. Composite tensile test was done to know the composite material properties applied FE analysis for URN composite. We predicted the buckling and post buckling analysis of composite laminated cylindrical panels under external compression by using ABAQUS /Standard[Ver 6.4]. To obtain nonlinear static equilibrium solutions for unstable problems, where the load-displacement response can exhibit the type of nonlinear buckling behavior, during periods of the response, the load and/or the displacement may decrease as the solution evolves, used the modified Riks method. The modified Riks method is an algorithm that allows effective solution of such cases [7]. Experiments were conducted to verify the validation of present analysis for cross-ply laminated shells. The shells considered in the study have two different lamination patterns, $[{\pm}45/0/90]_{18s\;and}\;[/0/90]_{18s}$. Cylindrical panel of experiment and analysis have the radius of 200mm, length of 210mm and 60 degree of cutting angle. The critical load from experiment is $69\%$ of that of numerical analysis, because the fracture of matrix was generated before buckling. So URN 300 is not proper to use at the condition under high external pressue.

This paper deal with the optimal lamination condition of cylindrical shell applied new composite URN300 for a study of composite empirical formula. Finite element analyses for isotropic materials considered element numbers and boundary conditions are compared with existing empirical formulas to apply FE analysis for composite. And composite tensile test is done to know the composite material applied FE analysis for composite. The results of FE analyses for isotropic materials have indicated that Optimal element number and boundary condition were 1600 and both simple support. These conditions were applied in composite FE analyses. Ply orientations and lamination patterns in FE analyses for composite were considered. Ply orientations are $0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;75^{\circ},\;and\;90^{\circ}$. Lamination patterns are $[\pm\theta/0/90]_{14s]$ and $[\pm\theta_{14}/0_{14}/90_{14}]_s$ in FE analysis. Lamination pattern $[\pm\theta_{14}/0_{14}/90_{14}]_s$ is the equivalent model of $[\pm\theta/0/90]_{14s}$. At the result of this study, the FE analyses for composite have indicated that the optimized ply orientation $75^{\circ}$ is and real model must use in FE analysis for accurate results.
