  • Six types of hat stiffened composite panels were manufactured with different bonding methods and stiffener section shapes and compression testing of these panels were performed. The panels showed similar behaviors in bucking and postbuckling region before a skin-stiffener separation failure occurred. Although all the separation failures occurred at the same locations of stiffener flanges close by skin buckling crests, the separation loads, separation failure growth behaviors and final collapse loads were different with respect to bonding methods and stiffener section shapes. As the separation failure initiated early and propagated larger area, collapse loads and structural efficiency of the panels decreased.

  • In this study, integrated co-bonded panels with the same configuration of hat stiffeners were fabricated and measured for ply waviness phenomenon. Total specimens consisted of 2 types; 1) the general co-bonded panel and 2) the co-bonded panel with caul plate made of carbon epoxy composite materials. The first general co-bonded panel specimen exhibited that laminate thickness on the stiffener location area was much thicker than the non-stiffener area and, there was ply waviness with 0.61 mm height and 3.29 mm length. In the second co-bonded panel specimen, the reduced waviness with 0.22 mm height and 1.37 length resulted in more than 50% improvements, which is due to the uniform pressure distribution of co-bonded interface by caul plate.

  • In this paper, composite panels with hat-shaped stiffeners were made using the co-curing, co-bonding and secondary bonding methods. Co-curing is a manufacturing method in which the hat part and the plate are cured simultaneously in a manner that is more cost effective than other methods. Co-bonding is a method in which the stacked prepregs are cured with other cured parts, and secondary bonding is a method in which cured parts are bonded together using an adhesive. A rubber mold was manufactured for co-curing of composite panel with hat-shaped stiffeners, and finite element analyses were done to evaluate the expanding pressure of the rubber mold consistent with the curing temperature. The manufactured panels were also evaluated using a 3-D measurement tester and an ultrasonic tester. Pull-off tests were performed to evaluate their mechanical properties.

  • Debonding failure characteristics of the composite skin-stiffener specimens were experimentally investigated. The influences of bonding methods, types of stiffener shape and various secondary bonding parameters were evaluated. Present test results combined with the previous test results[1] showed that the failure displacement of the skin-stiffener specimens well evaluates the skin-stiffener debonding failure strength of the composite stiffened panels. The specimens with an open type stiffener had lower bending stiffness and larger failure displacement than those with a closed type stiffener. Secondary bonding and co-curing with adhesive had better failure strength than co-curing without adhesive film. Secondary bonded specimens failed by adhesive failure and co-cured specimens failed by delamination failure. As the bondline thickness was thinner, the skin-stiffener specimens had higher failure strength. The fillets had no influence on failure strength of the specimens. The influence of the surface roughness was shown according to types of stiffener shape.

  • In this paper, a composite stiffened panel was fabricated using a three-dimensional weaving method that can reduce the risk of delamination, and mechanical properties such as buckling load and natural frequency were investigated. The preform of the stringer and skin of the stiffened panel were fabricated in one piece using T800 grade carbon fiber and then, resin (EP2400) was injected into the preform. The compression test and natural frequency measurement were performed for the stiffened panel, and the results were compared with the finite element analyses. In order to compare the performance of 3D weaving structures, the stiffened panels with the same configuration were fabricated using UD and 2D plain weave (fabric) prepregs. Compared to the tested buckling load of the 3D woven panel, the buckling loads of the stiffened panels of UD prepreg and 2D plain weave exhibited +20% and -3% differences, respectively. From this study, it was confirmed that the buckling load of the stiffened panel manufactured by 3D weaving method was lower than that of the UD prepreg panel, but showed a slightly higher value than that of the 2D plain weave panel.

  • The design of composite joint is important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the specimens with three paste thickness (0.2 mm, 0.6 mm, 4 mm) were manufactured in secondary bonding method and tested in two different loading direction condition. Also, the failure index of the L-type stiffener was calculated by the finite element method and compared with experimental results.

  • In order to develop composite fiber panels that can maximize the protection and blast resistance of the existing structures by improving lightweight, high-strength and fireproof performances of the single layer material of precast panels, the basic properties of the inner and outer covers that are mixed with aramid fibers (AF) and polyester fibers (PF) were evaluated in this study. Also, a basic study was performed on the performance of composite fiber panels by testing Nano-sized composite materials that are lightweight and excellent in fire resistance for their compressive strength, bending strength and tensile strength.
